Maalik gives you something; you never had before.
aurangzab20059 April 2016
After 23 years, writer of the masterpiece "Dhuwan", Ashir Azeem, returns as a debut film director, and yeah, he nailed it. Both cinematically and systematically Ashir Azeem's comeback venture has all the ingredients that makes this film, simply astonishing.

Maalik is about war, politics, corruption and most of all about patriotism and taking ownership of one's country. Portrays our society from grass root strugglers to the highest levels of wealth and power. But yes it rose above all the elements and showed us the bigger picture; "take control".

Four parallel stories moves along, intermingles and by the climax, people were either clapping hard or leaving the cinemas with hundreds of questions in their minds.

A SSG officer who wnet through a tragic incident, gets early retirement and starts a private security company with his father, combining his past SSG colleagues on their retirements.

A pathan that escapes from the Soviet war in Afghanistan after declining to take part in battle and settles in Karachi, with his wife and two daughters.

A school master who suffers a lot by a Pharohic nature lord and continues to fight for his right while walking on the path of idealism, while that corrupt, coldblooded lord becomes the Chief Minister and unleashes a reign of terror on all that cross his path.

And finally the SSG based security company ends up becoming a social working company, who will do anything to bring justice to this very society; works under the oath "main Pakistan ka shehri,Pakistan ka maalik hon"

In conclusion, Maalik is brilliantly made movie; filled with perfectly shot action sequences, heart wrenching tragedies and dirty politics; slick and stylish in quality and impactive in content;

Its a must must must watch for every Pakistani.

An excellent wake up call for the average Pakistani.
hamzabutt-2464227 April 2016
Warning: Spoilers
At first when I saw the trailer for Maalik, I thought of something else. However, I was completely mind blown to find out the movie was not what I had in my mind after watching it. The way the trailer was made portrayed a different story from what it actually was which I absolutely loved. Exactly how trailers are supposed to be made.

Moving onto the film, if you expect it to be something like Waar, you're in for a big surprise. It's noting like Waar. Waar was more of an action packed movie. This is an action packed thriller placed in an emotional roller coaster. In my opinion, its much better than Waar. The movie has been shot excellently and there is a good balance of action and drama. The way everything is combined into a single story line is pretty solid. The humor in this movie is really good, and has done its part in making the movie even more enjoyable.

There are however, some editing flaws that are at times obvious. The dialogue feels weak at times, but not to the extent that might ruin the movie.

Overall, the the movie sends out a strong message of taking ownership, responsibility and actually doing something constructive for the betterment of the country rather than waiting for someone to comes and solve the country's issues for you. The fact that they just banned this movie goes onto show how deep it digs into the dirty politics that goes in Pakistan. Absolutely Loved it. Go and watch it once the ban gets lifted(hopefully).

A very good attempt
zill_the_equestrian15 April 2016
"Maalik" depicts the true condition and story of Pakistan as it is today and as it has been for the past... since its inception. A corrupt-to-the-core society with the most corrupt bureaucracy, judicial system, police and politicians. "Maalik" is a story of those factors mentioned above. The storyline is very cohesive as is the acting of all the actors. A very mature attempt and "Maalik" has been giant leap in the filmmaking history of Pakistan since "Khuda Kay Liya" (2007).

A must-watch film for everyone living in today's Pakisan. The story has been concocted like Paul Haggis' "Crash" (2004) where all the characters are from different walks of life but come to a crossroad by the end of the movie.

Great Movie from Pakistan
fahimnomi9 April 2016
Let's not forget we are not going to watch an entertainment movie . it's a message movie it's an inspiration it's hope . Please don't expect to be at a level of Hollywood movie Their budget is 100 time more then this movie . Even by watching the movie trailer I get to know that what's this movie is all about. We should not watch this movie as cinema freaks we should watch this movie as Pakistan nationals and be inspired from it and do something for our country. Its like i'm watching a trailer of some Hollywood movie. This would be the biggest hit of the Pakistan cenimas now . Looking fwd... Ashir Azeems brilliant work in Dhuwaan was a master piece.. I am sure #maalik would be even better .. best of luck .. these kind of movies are needed to revive Pakistani cinema not something stupid like Karachi to Lahore and wrong number ..

I watched this movie yesterday in cinema and found this movie one of the best ever made in Pakistan in all aspects action, emotions, acting and even comedy, without any vulgarity.enjoy this movie with your family a very good source of entertainment.it reflects how the feudalism system in Pakistan have its roots in politics of Pakistan and how they are playing with the emotions of common man in the country, it also reflects how they (politician)play with the law and order agencies and if a common man entrapped in their hands then what will be effects over their families, the storey also highlight the life of army personel.at the end i say every one should watch this movie.

The best near to the real situation in Pakistan!
ranaabdullahset29 April 2016
I think that this movie have a best part of its plot of the story and the act being made by the cast is very well executed.this will be remember for a long in the history of Pakistan cinema.Pakistani cinema will got its tempo with this sharp and realistic story. The Director have a right to be happy with this. Producer also will have got appreciation also. The my favorite is the acting of the cast.this is very sharp and real. The decision of ban on the movie in Pakistan is also encourage the popularity among mass in society.Which have made a sign of interrogative in the mind of Pakistani's that what is in this story which make its very important for government. It's the story and The Panama leak which work together for the Corrupt Govt to make decision for ban on Maaaalik. But it massage is prevailed every where in Pakistan. Good luck cast of Maaalik

A Master Piece by Sir Aashir, Must watch and worth seeing movie, you will never loose your concentration while watching movie. First day i was not able to get tickets, but just bought in advance for next day. during the movie i was surprised with actions, plot and acting, everything was just perfect, every line of script was related to any other scene just like Hollywood movies, SSG Commandos as they are no 1 in word this movie shows their skills to word in better way, a very positive message, along with weakneses in our political system, toughness in life of SSG commandos, it will just gives you enough info to understand movie.

Maalik Is A Solid Entertainer
shafiq-siddiqui8110 April 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Ashir Azeem is known for entertaining his audience. Right from the days of Dhuwaan, he is labeled as the patriot and genuine entertainment provider to Pakistanis. Maalik is Ashir Azeem's directorial debut and the movie is amongst the most anticipated movies of Pakistni cinema. Let's see what Maalik has to offer to its viewers. Maalik is a tale of every citizen, in one way or the other. It revolves around an SSG officer who starts a private security company, after going through a major tragedy in his life. It is about the grudge between a feudal and a righteous school master. And it is also about a family which escapes from Afghanistan and settles in Karachi. There comes a point when all these lives intersect one another, that's what makes Maalik an engaging tale of love, patriotism, power, revenge and feudalism. Performance wise, Ashir Azeem is very calculated. He gives exactly what the character required. Hassan Niazi is competent and gave a stellar performance. Adnan Shah Tipu is very effective. Tipu adds lighter mood to the movie and some of his scenes re very well executed. Sajid Hassan and Muhammad Ehteshamuddin are good in their respective roles. By the way, there is Farhan Ali Agha in the movie as well, but his character is almost a filler, nothing substantial attached to it. Music of Malik leaves great impression. The title track and Maula are picks of the lot. But the remaining songs and the climax song "Nazria" are good too. The cinematography of Maalik is beautiful and brilliantly done. Direction wise, Maalik is impressive. Ashir Azeem proves again after so many years that he is an able captain of the ship and can sail in rough tides with competence. The only flaw in Maalik is editing. The film could have been chopped a little, plus there's an abrupt ending, which makes audience question about many things which weren't clearly answered in the movie. Apart from these two points, Maalik is a very nice attempt for the Pakistani cinema. It is a movie which is packed with patriotism, romance, action sequences and message. Watch Maalik and take ownership, that's what the movie is all about.

An incoherent pile of ideas and stories, which have been unsuccessfully tried to bring together as a Movie
j_hassan12 April 2016
Warning: Spoilers
It was year 1992 when a serial named Dhuwan was aired on PTV. Though PTV was famous for producing some top- notch plays in its time, Dhuwan was exceptionally different. It had such amazing elements in those days that still give us goosebumps even when we have watched the same play over and over. Its screenplay, dialogues, direction, background music, action sequences, acting, everything was beyond perfect. And biggest contributor to this gift to Pakistani viewers was Aashir Azeem.

This was the reason that when I heard that Aashir Azim was finally putting his creative persona on again after 22 years, I could not believe it. I waited patiently for "Maalik" to be released, and I watched it as soon as I could, i.e. today. But the thing that has made me write my first review on IMDb is the fact that the movie I have watched was nothing like Dhuwan. To even compare this movie to Dhuwan would be as big a sin, as to compare any Nicholas Cage movie to The Godfather.

This movie was terrible. In fact it was beyond terrible. It was so so bad that I remained physically and mentally in agony for the entire time movie ran. At times, I wanted to scream in between scenes and express my utter outrage on the level of incompetence the makers of this movie has shown.

The movie did not even contain an appropriate storyline. The beginning of the movie gave an idea if the remainder of the movie would be action-oriented. However after the action sequence in the beginning, it started developing on 3/4 story lines one by one, which did not make any relation to the main theme of the movie at all. And these story lines had sub-story lines too (like that Jihad loving guy's fight with bunch of lazy Russians) which did not benefit movie in any way except to make audience more confused. Even when I saw my watch for the hundredth time to know that we had to endure just another 30 minutes of this movie, I did not have a clue what the actual story of the movie was, or how it was supposed to end. The characters kept getting introduced during entire length of the movie, which were not appropriately developed, and which did not even had proper closures. And then there were some story lines which were ended abruptly (like giving Saeen's handyman 15 days to confess, but not telling what happened of it). Dialogues were at their lamest. Even the intimate scenes between a loving couple were written so so poorly that I literally wanted to punch Aashir Azim in his head and bring back his sanity. (The examples would be terming Aashir's kid as "Kuttay ka Bacha" in a supposed joke of Farhan Ali Agha or the discussion between the couple about their upcoming kid. Seriously Aashir, is this the way couples speak to each other when they have the biggest excitement of their lives in front of them?). I could not find a single loose dialogue piece in entire 13 episodes of Dhuwan, and here I couldn't even find one sentence worth being attributed to the same writer. And what about this strong language and crude scenes. Were those absolutely necessary? The jokes which contained such a language were mostly very crude and lame and the level of nudity shown in the movie was mostly of a dirty, third grade kind. Okay, we get that Saeen is a womanizer and he wants to have dance parties in his home every night, but do we really need to see so many girls dancing in cheap costumes every second scene or people lying naked in blankets to make us understand that?

Acting was disastrous. Nobody except Saeen, that Afghan father and the teacher did a marginal effort to make us feel any connection with any of the characters. Some were utterly horrible and made us constantly question why they were hired for acting in the first place. Even Aashir Azeem himself felt disassociated with the character at all places.

Yet the second worst thing in the movie after its horrible horrible writing was its editing. Have makers of this movie even heard of anything like editing? Even action sequences could have edited better, yet they still managed to pass. But most of the other scenes in the movie were boring and slow beyond patience.

I could go on and on and on picking and pinpointing such monstrous messups in the entire length but I feel giving this movie 3 hours of my life was enough of a mistake. Giving more time to think and write about the movie would just add to it.

In the last, I understand this is a Pakistani movie, and we as Pakistanies should encourage Made in Pakistan so that our cinema could be revived. Yet I also feel its our duty to duly criticize the final product so that this revival could eventually bring quality to the cinema as well.

Final verdict: anyone having any interest in cinema, or Pakistani movies, or having a general common sense and sanity should never ever go watch this movie. It would seriously hamper your senses and you would get out scolding the one guy who recommended this movie for you. 3 hours of sleep is much better option.

Maalik, Exactlly showing the situation of politics in Pakistan.
pakforces3 May 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Media's role is very important to show whats happening around. Maalik represents the situation of politics in Pakistan.

Written and directed by Ashir Azeem, the film is a complete entertainer with a perfect blend of action, romance, comedy and emotions. The film is about a retired SSG officer and his anti-corruption crusade against those in power.

On the opening, the movie surprisingly earned decently well on the box-office. The major chunk was earned from Karachi, Islamabad, and Lahore. However, the newly launched Cinepax Cinemas in Murree and Quetta also witnessed crowds of enthusiastic people lining up to watch the movie.

Action, Vigilantism and Patriotsim. Typical Ashir Azeem Project.
RuralSoul16 September 2018
I must say that this isnt among the best but this isnt bad either. film is very ordinary as far its direction and photography is concerned but due to latest technology, Pakistani films have got rid of ancient rainy look kind of pictures. As we all know that this is directorial debut for Ashir Azeem. So we can't expect it be up to the mark. The script could have been better. If actors could have been better to eradicate their overacting then poor script could have been neglected. Movie lacks realism as outdoor shots feel so phoney. Nevertheless its long way to go, so we an hope that future projects would be more professional. the things which are positive and i liked, *Real depiction of Afghan Mujahideen. *Inter-ethnic harmony. *Idea of Patriotism and Vigilantism.

Ashir Azeem's directorial debut extremely disappointing
alialtaf-986-20149716 April 2016
The much awaited Ashir Azeem movie turned out to be extremely disappointing. Being a strong fan of Dhuwan, i only went to see the movie because of Ashir Azeem and was expecting something special.

As it turned out the movie was ordinary at best. The biggest flaw was incoherent storyline and direction. The movie was all over the place. I never felt any continuity in the story line. At more that 2hrs 30 mins the movie was too long, same story could have been captured in half of that time and in a much better way. The Afghanistan sequence was out of place and totally unneeded, apart from two standout performances (CM and the teacher) acting was ordinary.

Pakistani movie scene has become vibrant and there are some good films coming out so if Ashir Azeem wants to venture into this arena he'll have to work really hard to win back his fans. I for one won't be going out to see another of his movies anytime soon.

One of the best movies ever!
saintsgenius_bsb11 April 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Just watched Maalik & Totally love the fact that our movies are not rubbish but trying to reawaken generation that have already surrendered to live under influence of corrupt leaders and their immoral activities. Allah bless our Military and those few patriotic Pakistanis who still haven't given up, one person can make a difference spec if he has some power. I watched dhuwaan when i was a kid & its still immensely popular. Glad Ashir Azeem hasn't disappointed me & I'm not sure not other people who r excited to watch this. The crew did a tremendous job. * Applause * 👏 RESPECT! Ps: There should totally be a sequel to this movie.

Putting a ban on this film makes it great
lethal_smile18 December 2016
I was going to rate this film 7.5-8 based on direction and story as story is not entirely original, we have seen many films from other countries in the past where one hero rises and raise a voice against the corrupt leader and brings justice in unlawful way but still story telling and his direction is unique but some action scenes could have done better or there was no need to jump and shoot, you don't need that but considering Aashir's film directorial debut I will say it's a well made film still it wouldn't get a 10.

The reason I gave it a 10 is that it has been banned by the government, people are literally fed up seeing corruption everywhere, rich is getting richer who is getting away with anything and poor is getting poorer, being abused, no justice for them. One scene in the film where this rich family kids abuse this Pachto maid who works for them as she can't understand English the word "MILK" made me feel sick as growing up there I have seen this how we treat our maids and servants there which is inhumane absolutely no need for it, sadly I have done it myself when I lived there and I was young which I regret but why rich is getting richer and poor is getting poorer. Why? open mafia political system in the country, so called democracy, one political mafia family (Bhuttos) from Sindh takes over then next turn is other family (Nawaz) which is from Punjab they take over both come and rob the country as much as they could in mafia style, starting with rigged elections as it is a poor country majority of population is poor, small percentage is rich. One vote all it cost is one time good meal, get them chicken korma they will be over the moon instead of their daily daal (lentils) or some vegetables and yes that poor person will give you the vote. Government begs money from US and UK, take billions of loan and it goes all in the family's pocket.

Conclusion: This film shows a small part of corruption in our society, yes I am saying small as our country is so infested with corruption that it makes it a small part. This film's a cliché but this is all happening, it's all true, this country is going back and back as most of countries are moving forward but it is going backward, people are turned against each other based on stupid reasons like cast, religion so corrupt people can divide and rule. People need to wake up. I am glad there are movies made on real issues thanks to Shoman who started it all. I watched this film on YOUTUBE I wish I would have gone to cinema to watch it if it is released in the UK I would go just to show my support, it is one of finest film made in Pakistan. I would definitely recommend to watch it.

excellent story and direction
finestudent9 December 2016
salute to "ASHIR AZEEM" . this is such a great movie with great story . cast is so perfect no body can stop himself standing and clap for it. no adventurism or stupid jokes. not even close to third grade formula movies. its close to perfection. i remember dhuwaan was a greatest drama. people cant forget it and now this movie will make the same impact. ashir did the best job in both roles , as young and old. sajiid hasssan showed again he is legend. he did small part with such big impact. the punjabi security guy is so cute i loved his accent. such a beautiful message to increase interstate relations. we are one but we don't try to meet each other.

ashir proved its not necessory to add useless songs and jokes, story is not completed i think. i request you to continue on next project, thanks for doing such hard work . must watch movie for all

The story was more real then fantasy
subhan-ihsan10 April 2016
Warning: Spoilers
The story was in pieces but the way Ashir Azeem compiled the pieces into a strong messages was too awesome. Ashir azeem did a PTV serial named as "Dhuwaan", well I was child then and I couldn't able to watch it. All I knew that he is a good director and actor. When I came across the trailer on social media I tagged my friend and he said we will go and watch it. The start was a bit slow at the end of first half I didn't even knew that which way the story is going and what actually story is but the time second half started the pieces of story started turning into a complete story and each part was looking so real that I couldn't able to realize that I'm watching a movie. The acting was super from actors and specially the camera work. There were moments when I was in tears and some of scenes made me think that how beautiful my country, my own country "Pakistan", is and how these terrorists and politicians destroyed it. At the end people were clapping and were saying it's awesome. I hope that one- day I'll see a beautiful and peaceful Pakistan.

Main Pakistan Ka Shehri, Pakistan Ka Maalik Hoon
pakistanartcinema13 April 2016
Based on reality than one would must think, all these action sequences simply outstanding. Pakistan produced such a brilliant movies which equally level the international cinema & far more better than Indian cinema. Pakistan should keep doing these kind of high standard movies. After "Waar" movie "Maalik" i must say best action movie & after "Moor" epic one "Maalik" a well written movie. Very strong grip from start to end. Director "Ashir Azeem" in this movie keep digging the past history of Pakistan. This one is not only about showing history but also give audience reason why you should own your country, this is your country in order to bring about change, one has to change him/herself first. Hats off To Ashir Azeem You Once Again Made Us Proud.

MAALIK is like a great holiday journey by air you have been waiting for long. Its take off is great, mid-course you feel nauseated and its end is abrupt.
ibn-e-azhar15 September 2016
The first question that comes to your mind after watching MAALIK is about its talented director/writer Asher Azim from TV serial TV "Dhuwan " .

'Where the hell he was in all those years?"

Being an aeronautical engineer or a CSS officer or even getting the Canadian nationality can't be acceptable excuses for Asher Azim's long absence from screen. But if somehow "subah ka bhola returns" …..we must welcome him ;-)

Asher's Dhuwan captured the imagination of whole generation of young Pakistanis that provided them requisite Adlerian rush. Almost a decade later the honor shifted to Shoaib Mansoor's classic "Alpha Bravo Charlie".

Now the movie MAALIK itself…… It's a great start and the worst ending a movie can have ! Almost first 40 percent portion of the movie is captivating and yet after interval it gets boring and boring.

And how one can be so obsessed with rapes……one movie two stories of rape…give us a break.

The story was dragged by the political stuff where a politician is given more than its due importance. It would have been better if the story kept its focus on the MAALIK i.e public rather than others. Here is a tip never choose a good looking villain,it can shift viewer liking from hero to villain !

Over all the film is OK as it had strong cinematography that captures the beauty of Baluchistan. The music, sound and acting are excellent but movie suffered from an uneven screenplay.

One thing...... probably most of the audience could find a connection of this movie with two Indian films i.e Salman Khan's "Body guard" and Amitab' Bachan's "Sarkar" .

MAALIK is like a great holiday journey by air you have been waiting for long. Its take off is great, mid-course you feel nauseated and its end is abrupt.

Not worth the time
ahmedomer-9855715 January 2019
5/10. Don't think it was that great or bad, just fine. When tackling issues like these, its best to spend the budget on more important stuff than less important stuff. Or it should be spent in a big way for both parts. More money should have been spent in the second half as that's the main part of the whole movie. The first half I think should have just included what the protagonist does (in a simple way) and then instead of unnecessary scenes, should have gone to the important part. I am sorry to say but I really couldn't develop any strong connection with the victims. I think its due to poor writing as well as poor acting. And also, It would have been better if there was only one to two plot line instead of too many. However, when it comes to the strong resolve of protagonist, I really liked it. And I also liked the main point that this movie was trying to deliver. As it conveyed it very easily. I just liked one mini part in the movie which was really moving and that person acting was also very good. Thus, all in all, it's a fine movie which really is not worth the time.

Hands Down Best film of the decade.. MUST SEE..
death_man_walker16 December 2016
Hollywood standard cinematography, especially the start . Strong story. Songs are good. Hope Ashir Azeem make a sequel of this movie.

I don't watch Pakistani movies and it took me a whole to watch this movie, but I am glad I finally watch this movie. It is such a shame govt banned this movie despite this movie was doing outstanding business first 3 weeks in the cinema. Some people might get distracted by dated change of events if they are not paying attention. I think Ashar can improve on that to transition movies more smoothly instead of going up and down. All actors did superb acting. Saeen CM guy should have been older and corrupt looking person just like in real life. Rest thing were more and less great.

The first half was incohorrent but picked up steam near interval
badar21016 April 2016
May contains spoilers The film lacked coherent plot in most part of the first half. In the first half, the writer wanted to introduce viewers to the self-appointed group of people, working towards safeguarding rights of common man. The film started by showing how the group operates; similarities with Sarkar movie are evident in that early scene. Then the film moves on from there to tell the story of members of the group. The writer start with Ashir Azeems's character and that is the most lousy part of the movie. Dialogues, direction and acting is bad in that 20 odd minutes story. The Film gets interesting when its tells the story of school teacher, and the migrated Afghan family and its hard to miss the rest of the film.

A biased Movie. No Holy Cow left in Pakistan, not even its armed forces.
mohit-kumar-c4 June 2019
I found this movie very biased. They have simply showed the negative side of Parliament, Police and Judiciary which simply put question mark on Director's Intentions. He has shown that the only Holy Cow has left in Pakistan is its Armed Institutions.

There are no Holy Cows in Pakistan each and every department, agency and institution have their own vested interests. Whether it is terrorism in Pakistan or weak democracy, whether its foreign policy or its economy, our institutions are the reason where we stand as a nation today because there are the real power in Pakistan today, because they have been running it since the beginning.

Director is also an aeronautical engineering from Pakistan Air Force, which further clears his dirty intentions. This movie has been successful in showing how the arrogant establishment sees Politicians, Judges and Police rather than accepting their own blunders.

This movie truly reflects Pakistani Politics. All characters were picked very precisely, as per roles.

Acting was also great. The story is very inspirational. The role of CM was very well played.

Music was also great. Specially songs sung by Rahat were Awesome. I also liked the little love story of Security guy and Afghani girl.

The scenes are all chosen as per their locations and originality. The movie seems so much original.

It feels like every such event happens around us. We do see these in TV. The problems faced in Police Station/ Judiciary were all presented in true manner
