It was... okay. Seriously, I watched it just for Carol Danvers/Cap Marvel

The Avengers find their holidays being compromised by that darned Loki, who has joined forces with the frost giant Ymir to kidnap none other than Santa Claus himself, who has it turns out is a super powerful mythological bad ass. Only the Avengers can save Jolly Old Saint Nick now! Oh and Rocket Raccoon and Groot show up too.

Once again Marvel Animation seems content to churn out a product that probably would have been more at home in the 1980s where it might have actually seen as off beat but feels out of place today. "Avengers Assemble" has (or had - I gave up after a few episodes) the same problem - where its predecessor "Earth's Mightiest Heroes" moved like a well oiled machine, "Assemble" just feels old, stiff, clunky and about 20 to 30 years out of date (and its attempts to mimic the MCU style banter never quite works). It would have been right at home alongside the GI Joe and Transformers cartoons of the 80s, but it hasn't been the 80s for quite some time.

For whatever its worth this feature is somewhat more watchable than AA or "Ultimate Spider-Man", despite being about 10 minutes too long and featuring a lot of overwritten dialogue in an attempt to mimic the MCU. There are some genuinely funny bits in the film, such as Rocket Raccoon and Groot's encounter with Mrs. Claus. There's also a surprisingly poignant moment where the heroes gather around a fire and share Christmas memories (for Reptil getting dinosaur toys, for Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers getting tickets to an air show where she got to sit in a jet, for Captain America/Steve Rogers getting a baseball & bat despite not having any skill for the sport).

The feature's greatest asset however is Carol Danvers showing up as Captain Marvel. Grey DeLisle-Griffin reprises the role of Carol from "Superhero Squad" and she easily steals the show by managing to be tough but also funny and personable, snagging most of the better one liners along the way. The other voice actors do decent enough work, with Steve Blum and Jane Singer both turning in amusing performances as Santa Claus, Santa's doppelganger and Mrs. Claus.

Overall not a work of art, but an okay holiday viewing if you've got 70+ minutes to kill.

Earth's Mightiest He-reindeer(?!)

The live action Avengers will probably never do a 'Christmas special' - too expensive, and, y'know, stupid. So, to fill the void, we've instead been graced with an animated kids cartoon equivalent, pitting Earth's Mightiest Heroes against arch-foe Loki in a quest to track down…um… Santa Claus. And, as you'd imagine, Marvel Super Hero Adventures: Frost Fight, rather than filling the viewer with festive spirit, instead recalls the uncomfortably hallucinogenic madness of the Star Wars Christmas special Lucasfilm would pay any price to have you forget. For Disney's sake, let's hope young Marvel fans have shorter memories…

That's not to say that Frost Fight is a complete waste of time. Marvel has really stepped up the production values in their recent animated work, and Frost Fight shines in its relatively fast-paced and intense fight sequences, including working in some creatively designed Frost Giants and other monsters for the heroes to smack around (even if the animators recycle several background or transitional templates, a-la 1960s Spider-Man cartoon, giving the film a visibly cheap look at times by comparison). That said, the film as a whole struggles with a pretty intense identity crisis in terms of how young or old to skew, contrasting the slicker fight choreography with some pretty abrupt 'kid-friendly' tonal shifts – poke in the butt/cartoon sound effect/massive double-take, etc. – which is thoroughly distracting and vaguely unpleasant throughout.

It doesn't help that the 'quest for Santa Claus' is an unmistakably goofy premise, and it's hard to imagine even younger audiences not raising an eyebrow in disbelief at the disjuncture in plausibility (though I will now always lament never getting to hear Tom Hiddleston suppress a smirk while saying "Santy Claus" in full live action Loki garb). Still, the script handles the silliness as gamely as possible, and there's a certain campy fun in having Santa grounded in Asgardian mythology – and we can now look forward to industriously nerdy kids correcting their peers by referring to Santa as 'Jolnir' - as well as a knowing dig at Santa nonbelievers, here represented by both the hyper-logical Iron Man and Loki, both of who are forced to extensively eat their words. 'Tis the season for shaming non-practitioning parents?

That said, the tonal whiplash takes an even more frightening turn at the arrival at the ludicrous land of the Elves. The setting - a flurry of nonsensical candy canes, like Hallmark threw up in the middle of a snowstorm - is rendered a surreal nightmare for adults let alone kids, as gratuitous guest stars Rocket Raccoon and Groot battle a wasteland of sentient, evil gingerbread men… and subsequently massacre them, shooting and bashing them to pieces, as the gingerbread men howl in agony. And if this wasn't bad enough, Rocket and Groot are then pursued by the disintegrating, occasionally two-headed 'zombie' gingerbread remains, like a Calvin & Hobbes snowman sequence directed by David Lynch. Anyone deranged enough to think this was suitable viewing for children deserves coal in their stocking indefinitely. There's also some dubious gender politics regarding the 'maternal instincts' of a reptilian behemoth, but even objectionable ideological content in kids programming pales in comparison to the Zombie. Gingerbread. Massacre. I'm shuddering just thinking about it.

But in the end, the Avengers lineup is too much fun to ever be a complete write-off. Including Captain Marvel is a fun plug for the upcoming MCU Phase 3, even if the inclusion of requisite teen sidekick Reptil and his vaguely defined dinosaur transformation powers (what…?) is predictably annoying. Mick Wingert does a plausible Robert Downey Jr. impression, though voice vet Kevin Michael Richardson disconcertingly appears to forget to inflect while repeating "I am Groot", while having Fred Tatasciore's Hulk become a Christmas-obsessed carolling pun-machine is…disconcerting, at best (Thor uttering war cries while driving Santa's sleigh is a different story altogether, though).

Frost Fight is occasionally fun, though mostly uncomfortably enjoyable in a delirious 'how is this happening' sort of way. It's undeniably one of the more short-sighted and demented Marvel cartoon offerings, and ultimately one worth passing on, save for the most obsessive and forgiving youngsters (and those with a pretty sturdy tolerance for freakish sentient snack food violence, to boot. Seriously. ZOMBIE GINGERBREAD MASSACRE. Yeesh).

Admittedly, this is... better than most episode of AA or SMASH, in some spots the animation is not as stiff but it does make it more inconsistent, as was some of the audio sync.

Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers) was a nice addition, and unlike AA's Black Widow or SMASH's She-Hulk, she has a lot more personality as a female character. She's kind, she's sincere, and she has this uplifting nature and even her own sense of humor when she's interacting with the other heroes. I miss Jennifer Hale, but Grey Griffin did a fine voice as Carol, as was Matthew Mercer, he sounds like a decent stand in for Rodger Craig Smith, though he may have sounded a bit too young sometimes, but he still did a good job portraying the character. Then there's Mick Wingert as Iron Man, very reminiscent to Eric Loomez with his Robert Downy Jr. impression, which I liked since it reminded me of the former's performance back in EMH. Anthony Del Rio, back as Reptil since his role during the SuperHero Squad, never thought I'd hear back from him again, and I didn't think he'd still sound so young. This dude's got range.^^

Steve Blum as Santa... I admit was actually rather good. Didn't think he'd steer away from his usual Steve Blum palate, he was a pretty good Santa Claus. Although, I kind'a wish they got someone other than Fred Tatasciore to play Blizzard King, sounds too remnant to The Hulk, perhaps someone like Neil Kaplan or John Dimaggio for a change, but as usual he's still fine with what he's got.

While I usually do not like the typical AA style banter, Both Captain Marvel and Captain America expressed some pretty solid character personality, especially regarding their childhood history with Santa.

The music for the most part was also very mellow, and there were some bits here that I did find kind'a funny. Mind you I wasn't roaring with laughter, but the few good jokes or lines of dialogue they had, did get a smile out of me.

So, with the positives out of the way, it's time for met to point out the negatives.

While there are some decent bits of animation, most of it is still stilted (Especially with the camera movement.) and again it feels inconsistent when those different animated sequences clash.

Hulk and Thor were being bothersome as usual and I think they may have caused some collateral damage (Hopefully not killing anyone in the process!) and really I felt that bit and the scenes with Rocket Raccoon were just padding.

And again some visuals and audio bits seemed rather out of place in some spots, like with Rocket after the sleigh ride with Mrs. Claus for example.

Tony I'm... kind'a mixed on. There were some bits were he did play it smart with Reptil, and he even had a couple funny lines, but again I just can't steam the AA style of banter he has with the other characters. And Oi I cannot stand the nonsense puns they keep pulling out of their Christmas puns. *Rimshot Drum Beat*

And then there's that forced moral about belief (Which I critically destain against) like with this one moment in the film where Reptil outright says "You don't need proof to believe!"

Uh, yeah dude, you do need proof! You need solid evidence to prove something...Also, Believe?! I'm sorry, but when it comes to proving something true, it's about, Knowing! Not "Believing!"

And btw, let's get something stupid out of the way! The bit where we see Reptil shivering, and Captain Marvel flat out says it's because he's, cold-blooded... Yeah pop cultural consciousness is not kind to zoology, especially when it comes to prehistoric animals like dinosaurs. Look I don't expect everyone to know by now that dinosaurs and most other Mesozoic reptiles were warm-blooded, but anyway here's the real problem I have with that quirk-- Reptil is HUMAN! He's still a human being, which is an ape, which is a primate, which is a mammal; and we all know mammals are Warm-Blooded! So even putting aside the debate as to whether dinosaurs were warm or cold-blooded, Reptil, as a human being is warm-blooded never the less! And even if he was "cold-blooded" then he wouldn't just be shivering, he'd probably be in a state of suspended animation, or at worst the cold might possibly even kill him! Don't you think Reptil, may have been shivering... simply because he's just really cold?!

Ugh, anyway there's also this bit where the Elves apparently listen to Reptil more than the other Avengers because he's younger, and according to them "Youth speaks Truth?" I can't decide if that's either pretentious or just lazy.

Ah well. Anyway, as is, Frost Fight is mediocre at best. Which is not surprise, but at the same time I really wanted to like this special, not only for the new character but because it had some other context which I did find pleasing.

But as is, over all I give it 5/10 starts. Still not a big step up for Marvel Animation, although I will admit I am eager to see the creators tackle something Halloween related.

Marvel Super Hero Adventures Frost Fight!: For the kids and the kids alone

Being a Marvel fan one thing that always frustrates me is the lack of demographic consistency. The animation can range from 15's down to U's and this one is certainly the latter.

In this adventure aimed directly at the tiddly winks the Avengers must team up with Rocket & Groot to stop Loki from gaining the power of Santa Claus.

Yep, that wasn't a typo. Santa is now part of the Marvel Universe I suppose and essentially has his own Christmas realm full of candy canes & gingerbread men.

As you can imagine the whole thing is very low-key (Pun intended) and childish. The animation is all very colourful, the action scenes are cutesy and the humour is aimed at the young.

The whole Santa Claus thing made it difficult to take any of it seriously, that and the addition of Reptil who Marvel just can't seem to stick with an ethnicity of. He was originally hispanic but I've seen both caucasian and african american incarnations.

Great for your kids, not so good for adults.

One night I noticed this was on Netflix and I thought it would be like Avengers Assemble but boy was I wrong. After reading the plot I was a already a little skeptical about watching this but they usually have at least one thing that the teen and adult fans can enjoy but this had nothing. Captain Marvel was the only thing that was remotely good about this but her character felt so underdeveloped. I really wish it had Hawkeye and Black Widow but I guess two female main characters was too much for them to handle. Also, why was Tony acting like such an a**?! I have to admit the voice was much more similar to RDJ than Adrian Pasdar's but with the voice came a whole new personality that they tried way to hard to be like the MCU. And once again Hulk is portrayed as the idiot. I know they do this in Avengers Assemble to but I'm really getting tired of the writers using Hulk whenever they need some stupid comic relief. While I'm on the topic of characters, where were Starlord, Drax, and Gamora? The way I see it is if you're going to feature the guardians of the galaxy at least have all of them. Also, WTF was up with that candyland place! I swear to god they just sucked all the seriousness of the Marvel Universe away in one hour and a half long special. But by far the worst part was that stupid kid. All he did was be an annoying little sh*t that got in everybody's way and I was ready to go X-Men Origins on his a** and sew his f*cking mouth shut by about the tenth time he said that everybody needed to believe. Speaking of believe the forced moral was yet another terrible thing about this complete sh*t storm of stupid. So they can shove their anything is possible if you believe bullsh*t right back up whoever's a** they took it from. My recommendation is if you genuinely want to watch this do it alone because you will find yourself yelling at the TV and telling the characters to die and burn in hell

Santa Claus Is A Guest-Star

This swings far far away from Avengers Assemble to the point of Marvel Super Hero Squad. There's a lot of kid humor and it's too child friendly. 'Frost Fight' offers nothing to an older audience. Teen fans will hate it, adult fans will immediately notice how cheaply this was made, and anyone under the age of 10 will have a lot of fun with it.

It presents the Carol Danver's version of Captain Marvel which I was hopeful about, but I found myself missing Hawkeye & Black Widow. Her look is kind of dated and is out-of-place with the other artwork. Basically a completely different art-style.

There's a trainee kid who goes by 'Reptil' that I found incredibly annoying. His power is having pterodactyl wings. It's a throw-away character that you might expect to be killed off (for sake of showing death) without erasing a major character.

Steve Rodgers/Captain America and Tony Stark/Iron Man have different voice actors. It sounds close, but it's a little weird. I personally have a pet-peeve about Marvel changing voice actors just for the films.

Santa Claus & Mrs. Claus make their way into the story and it's the Kiss Meets Santa joke from Family Guy. Yeah - Somebody threw out a movie really fast and whoever did it should be fired. Grossly incompetent choices were made about this release.

Marvel Presents: Terrible lessons for Children

OK, I'm going to be the Grinch here, and begrudgingly give this 1 star, but only because there isn't a 0 star option. This flick is unbelievably terrible, as yet another movie that tries to backdoor the tired "religion and faith are better than knowledge or science" lesson--a horrible concept to teach a child. This even tops the "Magic is just super-advanced science" as the worst motif and lesson that can be taught to a child. There is no part of this story that isn't the smelliest, most terrible cheese you've ever encountered. This makes the 1960s Batman TV show look like a serious drama. (Yes, I know that's DC and this is Marvel, but Marvel didn't really have any TV show presence that could provide a guideline or reference.) This show is campier than a pride parade or a boy-scout troop on wilderness survival training. It is Ed Wood bad, without the charm or accidental merit. The writing is worse than the Star Wars Prequels. Heck, this movie manages to be even worse than the 1978 Star Wars Christmas Special!!!

Good enough for a Christmas spacial

As a fan of both Avengers Assemble and Guardians of the galaxy, I have to say this isn't the best Marvel film I have seen or the worst for that matter.

Most of the bad reviews are just coming from hardcore nerds.

This is really a kids movie, to be honest than an adult or a teen movie. If kids like it then that is all that matters.

I do have a few complaints about the film, however. Like why were some of the voice actors changed like Captain America, JARVIS and Iron Man?

Captain America and JARVIS were good for voice but Iron Man was not because the voice actor was too high pitch and annoying. They should have just let Matthew Mercer voice Iron Man and Captain America instead or just contact Adrain Pasder. Or even Troy Baker who was Loki in the movie would have been a better choice for Iron Man.

What never made sense was why Star-Lord, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Gamora, Drax and Falcon were not in the movie or even mentioned even once.

Apparently, Santa exists in this universe. What really annoyed me was that Reptile from TSHSS was in this movie and had his original voice actor back same with Captain Marvel even though the voice did improve and it wasn't annoying.

Fun for Kids

If people watched this movie understanding what it is-a vehicle for the characters appropriate for the 3-10 crowd-they wouldn't be so disappointed. My toddler loves the Avengers but the live action movies popular in theaters are not appropriate for him. Movies like this and the Marvel LEGO movies, with kid-oriented plots and jokes and less violence, let him see his favorite characters without the graphic content. Don't watch this expecting it to supplement the canon from the comics etc.-it's just a capitalization on the Marvel universe's popularity and make it accessible to a wider audience.

Best Christmas Special Ever

MCU humor and goofy holiday fun with awesome Mrs. Claus and no pesky religion. Reclaims Santa for Norse mythology by insisting that he's really Jólnir, though he makes even cynic Tony Stark believe -- in Marvel logic, Santa is part Frost Giant, part Alfheim elf, plus Santa can control space-time, which is how he can deliver gifts to what JARVIS estimates must be over 5,000 households per second. Loki is a delightfully charming villain even if his heart doesn't grow three sizes that day, and the whole film would be worth watching just for the scene of Thor pulling Santa's sleigh along with the reindeer.

Should've be "must have" for winter holidays!

Neglected without reason, with bad raiting!

As most of Marvels Animation..

I guess today's people if it's not live action, and with "real" voices.. nahh..

It's perfect!

I watched, and still haven't finish.. Full that Marvel Animated Universe which they've made with series in many many seasons and episodes.. From Ultimate Spider Man, Avengers Assemble, Hulk and the Agents of S. M. A. S. H, Guardians, etc.. Where all of you can see and meet and learn so much, when you get into it.. You actually realize how much they have, how many stories, heros, how much potention for stories, for movies.. After watchinn few seasons.. I was like.. I'm dissappointed actually in them, they gave us so little, they could've make much more, explore much more, so we could watch example Iron Man for so long..

As here now, this is one of few which they made in that era of series, in that era we got and few specials or, better to say, animated movies, this one was for Holidays for Christmas!

And when you follow series, you are well known with all of them, their stories, voices, jokes, connection, etc.. And as someone who watch, it was great pleasure to watch this!

It was like.. after whole year watchinn you all, became my family to say like that, let's finish this year together with this special, before rest of the seasons..

It's just too great!

And watching this, as many others.. Couldn't for million one more time and not to ask myself..

"Why they wouldn't make this in live action ?

Little upgrade story ?"

Imagine Avengers in rescue mission on Asgard, on part with light elves, to rescue Santa Claus who is actually from Asgard, from Loki and Frost Giant ?

Ah yeah, you're right, they already smashed and Asgard and ruined mostly whole Avengers.. And after what, few stories.. Go check for yourself series.. You'll actually realize, how little they gave us..

In the end, I would recommend to watch this after few seasons of animated series universe.. (I would say after first three of Avengers.. Spidey, Agents of SMASH, even Guradians, you can skip before this.. because in Avengers Assemble you'll connect with example Hulk and Thor and their friendship, Iron Man as leader, Cap it's actually best example, through series you can see what character and respect he was, how dedicated, etc.. Captain Marvel I think she joined in third season.. you get it what I wanted to say..) But, you can even on it's own.. But without, and if you watched only movies.. It's gonna be 5 as this raiting.. But if you.. 10, I promise!

I blame Marvel and Disney both.. They should've promote and this, as whole that Universe which they've made with long series, much much more.. Or they didn't wanted, so movies could looked great!

Funny Christmas Special

When I had seen the rating of this movie I expected poorly animated movie with few stupid jokes... But I was totally surprised because I could not resist to smile to so many classic Avengers jokes - people on train had to think I was watching some really great comedy.

To sum up: This movie is holiday special and should be watched with that in mind. But to be honest I hardly saw better Christmas movie than this one...

Those who look for some "serious" Avengers movie, pick some of Marvel Animated Features collection but if you are looking for funny movie with some original idea how to bring Christmas topic to Avengers movie, it is worth the shot.

9/10!

Such an interesting and cute Christmas Marvel movie! I loved the plot & the whole mood of the film, it was Christmas-y enough, and the characters were great!
