Michael Jackson's Estate has an ally who was once it's arch enemy -- none other than Michael's dad, Joe. We've learned Joe is now a staunch supporter of the Estate he once claimed was robbing members of his family of their just deserts. Michael's will cut Joe out completely, as it did Mj's brothers and sisters, and Joe called the document fraudulent and went after the Estate and the executors. It's a different story now for several reasons.

Michael Jackson made bigger records than Off the Wall, but he arguably never made a better one — the album's masterful fusion of funk, disco, pop and Quiet Storm R&B captures the singer at his most effervescent. A deluxe edition of the record arrives February 26th, accompanied by a new documentary, Michael Jackson's Journey From Motown to Off the Wall, helmed by Spike Lee, who also directed a movie about the 25th anniversary of Bad. From Motown to Off the Wall premiered at Sundance in January, and it airs on Showtime February 5th.

There's a moment about one-third of the way through Spike Lee's new documentary Michael Jackson's Journey From Motown to Off the Wall in which the Jackson estate's archivist pulls out a yellowed, frayed letter and reads aloud. Written after Michael and his brothers, collectively known as the Jackson 5, had left Motown and were recording under the name the Jacksons, the future King of Pop is jotting down various aspirational goals: He wants to get into the movies, he wants to explore all musical styles and directions, he wants...

“Michael Jackson’s Journey From Motown to Off the Wall” is overflowing with phenomenal performance footage of the legendary musician from his early days with The Jackson 5 to his adult work on 1979’s Off the Wall. Spike Lee’s documentary on this formative period in Michael Jackson’s career derives its electric, enlivening energy from these fantastic clips. Alas, they’re not enough to alter the fact that this non-fiction effort — premiering at Sundance (and hitting Showtime next month), but primarily produced in conjunction with Jackson’s estate to be packaged with a new reissue of Off the Wall — is merely a nostalgic promotional puff piece meant to look back fondly, and uncritically, at an artist transitioning from a youth-oriented pop fad to the biggest star in the world.
