The Protector of Concord Dawn
lassegalsgaard15 December 2019
I didn't know about the Mandalorians and their culture through the extended universe as many others did back with the novels and comicbooks. I learned about it through "Star Wars: The Clone Wars," and I was waiting for Dave Filoni to bring them back. And now, he finally has. I found this episode to be exceptionally thrilling and compelling. The idea of it starting out with one of our crew members getting seriously injured was a bit of a shocker, but I like that they didn't hold back on it. I liked the introduction of Fenn Rau, a new character who reminded me a lot of a good version of Pre Vizsla. I liked his connection with the main players, and I also thought his role was very refreshing. A lot of things happened that I didn't expect to, so what was nice. Overall, the only real setbacks was that a few of the sequences felt a little bit out-of-place, and I also feel like this is an episode for hardcore fans of the Mandalorian lore, and it got a little hard to follow at times. However, it was a great episode and one that added a lot of new players to the table and a new arc for Sabine that I can't wait to see unfold futher.

Mission to Mandalore

Warning: Spoilers
It is good to have a return for Mandalorian society in the story. We get to see something of where Mandalore has headed since events of the Clone Wars.

The character Fenn Rau and the Protectors ships are cool and there is some decent action.

The beginning is pretty shocking and impactful as Hera suffers a perilous attack and that adds some emotional weight to the episode.

My rating: 8/10.

Dynamic Duo

Warning: Spoilers
Plot; Looking for a new hyperspace route to thwart the Empire, the Alliance go to the planet Concord Dawn to ask the permission of the occupying Mandalorians.

I have mixed feelings about demystifying the Mandalores, but on balance I do like seeing their culture fleshed out a bit. Here it's all pretty thin anyway, all bun and no meat, if you get me.

The pairing of Kannan and Sabine worked pretty well, with their personalities clashing and complimenting one another in an entertaining way, and I definitely wouldn't mind seeing them paired up again in the future.

Death watch!

A pretty solid entry overall. Not as good as the best episodes of the season, but it has good stakes. Sabine isn't a character I've grown very attached to, but it seems maybe her pst is suppose to kept pretty secretive. I look forward to episodes more focused on her character. Her and Kanan had some great moments though.

I have one big problem with the episode

Warning: Spoilers
I came here to write this because I can't find it written anywhere. The Protectors attacked the Rebels unprovoked when they came for negotiations. They killed two rebel pilots (which the show markets as disposable and faceless) and almost killed Hera.

Despite all this unforgettable sins, Kanan goes to make allies out of them and forces a no kill policy when the negotiations failed.

And I do get the moral high ground of the Jedi, but this is way beyond turning the other cheek. And the fact now one mentioned the absurdity of Kanan's stance is beyond me.

Also, the episode is plagued by more nonsense:
  • Fenn Rau doesn't spin the aircraft to loose Kenan despite knowing his lightsaber could crash his ship in an instant. He is still slow to take evasive manoeuvres despite being damaged.

  • no Mandalorian actually hits anything they're shooting. I mean, I get the stormtroopers, but Mandalorians are highly skilled warriors. And Sabine is shooting at them from open ground, without anybody actually being threatening with their blasters.

  • I still am upset that such a small explosive charge can do so much damage and such missions are not executed more often. Same with small crafts destroying Star Destroyers.

  • Fenn Rau changes his optic on the fact that he doesn't want the empire to know he has been captured because that would tighten their grip on his home world. But all that would be solved with one tiny beat of betraying the rebels. They would be obliterated if caught when passing through their system.

This isn't really good writing. That's my two cents.
