Clever episode
Mrchaziebear23 March 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Very clever episode. The writing was perfect. The ending seemed strange at first but just think about how the souls escaped the nest. Dean and Sam killed the soul eater letting Booby free as well since time does not exist in the nest.

I loved how the flashbacks were tied together, even though the events were happening years apart.

Its good to see that the writers established when the flashbacks were happening for continuity.Honestly, it was at times more interesting than the main the story arc of the season. I totally forgot about the darkness when watching this episode.

Absolutely Fantabulous
ailiciatorrence25 March 2016
OK first let me start by saying this is episode just made it to 2nd place in my top 2 favorite episodes of season 11. The Baby episode of course makes the number 1 spot. I absolutely love when they take it back to the beginning and it sort of feels like seasons 1-4 again. I love that sense of nostalgia I get when watching an episode like that and both Baby and Safe House took me there. First let me start out with why Baby is my favorite and then we'll get to Safe House. Baby is at the top for me because we got to see them relax and have fun together. We all know Baby is their "home" but in this episode it kind of makes it concrete...solidifies it. It made Baby a sort of safe haven for them, an actual 3'rd character. You see Sam and Dean laugh more than you've seen since season 2. And lets not forget when Sam called Dean, "De". We've always heard Dean refer to Sam as "Sammy" and I love this because it gives the characters history. "Sammy" is Sam's childhood name, you hear it in the flashbacks and according to Sam, Dean's is the only one who gets to call him that (Season 2, Episode 3 "Bloodlust") if you didn't get that reference lol. But in Baby, Sam returned the favor and spoke Dean's childhood nickname, "De". And even though we've only heard that once in 11 seasons, it came out of Sam's mouth so easy and natural that I can actually imagine Sam using that nickname over and over when they were kids and Dean doing whatever Sam wanted. It was just a great all around "bromance" episode that we've all been itching to see again for some time. Every scene from them washing the Impala, to them singing "Night Moves" to them having the "broment" in the car where Sam told Dean the truth about getting infected. The whole "Goodnight, Bitch" "Goodnight Jerk" bit we've all been waiting to hear. It was all perfect. As we know Supernatural is all about these two brothers so its only natural that this episode be my favorite of the season. Trust me though, Safe House is a VERY close second place--- Safe House is number 2 on my list because of course, its another nostalgia episode. Bobby was like the a father to the boys. Bobby was their go to guy when they were stuck on a case. Bobby was their counselor. He was their everything and he was everything to us as fans and it felt good to see him as himself and not some ghost or hallucination. His friendship with Rufus is the best. The shout out to Lethal Weapon as Lieutenant Riggs and Lieutenant Murtaugh had me dying of laughter! Their constant bickering is so refreshing and funny because you know they only do it because they love each other and you can literally feel their history when they are together. I loved the scene where Bobby goes "Are you getting soft on me, Rufus?" and Rufus goes "Yeeeaah, "soft" this!" and hangs up on him. LoL! I also really enjoyed they way they jumped back and forth between Rufus/Bobby version of the case and Dean/Sam version of the case. It was so seamless and easy. Also, I love when they throw in answers to questions from seasons LOOONG past but so far I haven't seen anyone else comment on the bottle of Johnnie Walker Rufus left in Bobby's seat at the end of the Safe House episode so I'm guessing I'm the only one who noticed. Does anyone remember Season 7, Episode 12 "Time After Time"? It was right after Bobby died and Jody Mills and Sam were going through Bobby's things trying to find info on a case they were working. They found a bottle of Johnnie Walker in a box with a note attached to it that says "Fine, you Ass! You win for once. Enjoy. R" and they were trying to figure out what bet Rufus lost to Bobby and now we know! They bet on whether the creature they were hunting was a ghost or a baku and Bobby won. I guess Bobby kept that bottle all those years because it was probably the only bet he ever won against Rufus lol. Both Baby and Safe House are just two all around good, solid, heart warming, tear jerking, take me back in time episodes. Sorry I get long winded when I talk about something I'm passionate about

Robbie Thompson - An actual hero
EmmaAlt23 March 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I don't know what to say. This episode had everything any viewer could have hoped for. Why is it that every episode Robbie Thompson writes is an absolute masterpiece? Hands down, this guy is a genius. Everything was perfect. The time leaps, the editing, the screenplay, the music, absolutely everything. This episode was not only entertaining but also heartbreaking. I got chills all over my body when the trapped souls started disappearing and Dean saw Bobby on the staircase. What an amazing scene. I'm currently re-watching the first season of the show and I was just thinking about how much I miss the "old style". Scary cases but always a little humor and sensitivity to comfort the viewer (and, of course, the awesome background music). This episode gave me that exact feeling back and it was absolutely amazing. Almost like coming home.

I can't wait to see what happens next based on Castiel/Lucifer and the darkness. Good job!

Bobby and Rufus return
cross52531 March 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Bobby and Rufus sitting in a car, f-u-s-s-i-n-g, first comes death and then comes hunting. Excellent show, all shows with Bobby and Rufus are always entertaining. Its a seamless story that occurs in the same location, simultaneously a "handful" of years apart. I'm hoping that future episodes can somehow incorporate Bobby and Rufus, or at least more Bobby. This is like a soap opera in that it goes to show the viewers that no one stays dead. The fact that the characters are brought back in a meaningful story line and not just shown, for the sake of showing them. They have gotten off topic of hunting for Amara, but these guys have a way of coming back on topic and the ability to blow your mind while doing it. I'm curious as to what season 12 is going to bring. I really like this show and very happy it didn't stop at season 5, as was the original plan.

Bobby and Rufus back in the Saddle.
keiran-l1 August 2019
The cry babies that don't get that 20+ episode seasons requires some filler can suck it.

Great episode with the return of two fan favourites, which felt like "Classic Supernatural".

A strong concept powers a high point in season 11
CubsandCulture19 October 2020
The Soul Eater is one of the better monsters the show has come up with; it is a unique hunting pattern for a monster. The director also manages to make the episode creepier than the average one by leaning into the ethereal aspects of the concept. But the best feature of it is the parallel plotting really brings out the generational differences between Bobby, Rufus and the Winchesters. The bickering between both "couples" is very fun. Overall this is a really strong episode in a season that is lackluster.

Bobby and Rufus a.k.a solid proof for a good episode
Claire240328 August 2022
Like the title, that's all you need to know about this episode. The parallel between past and present is a nice story-telling method. Bobby and Rufus bonding, humour and great hunting knowledge are always preasure to watch. This time monster-of-the-week is decent enough, at some point I thought I was watching Insidious, but a less scary and TV-show version. Above all, what I love about this episode is how it emphasizes Bobby's love for the boys and how he would remain an important part on the boys' journey.

Overall, this one is a good filler. Might be on my top favourite filler this season alone, just behind the masterpiece 'Baby'.

Explanation of Episode Reviews
jdberner17 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Please don't be angry, but this is how it works: 1) An episode that directly furthers the seasonal (or multi-seasonal) plot line gets above a 9. Any episode in the later seasons with Bobby, likewise gets a 9. This episode features Bobby in a "pre-historic" role, hence its high reviews, which i agree with...we all miss that incorrigible idealistic reprobate!!! Again, please don't be angry with me for spelling it out. I must note that this isn't an episode that truly deserves the rating i gave it, but it was nice to see Bobby again. It's nice to know that he will always periodically appear, and by using the device of a flashback, any brief appearance is not an interruption of the plot line. My overly ebullient rating is for the writers/producers/et al for using this plot device. Mark my words, tho': when this series nears its end, "recovering" Bobby will be part of the goal, and he WILL lay an important role.

Only good part of the show
darkdementress19 October 2021
Bobby and Rufus were the only really good part of the show and they had to kill the both off so early sad they keep bringing them back and they're the only decent episodes in the whole season really. But still hunters have been a thing for at least 20 plus years and live in a world where there's just all these monsters and ghosts and stuff and yet everyone is still so ignorant as if this stuff isn't real in any sense of the word..🙄 like come onnnn..
