The musical was SUPPOSED to suck...
gkangchs26 April 2021
To those of you who complain about the episode because of the 10-minute musical they put us through, you were SUPPOSED to hate it. Coming from a musical lover who usually loves Christian Borle and Sutton Foster's work, I hated it too. Good. They did their jobs. It wasn't supposed to make sense, hence Lorelai's reaction. Don't knock the entire episode for those 10 minutes. They WANTED our "WTF" reaction.

Better than average

This is the first episode of A Year in the Life that's actually pretty good. There are still some off moments (The thirtysomethings, the ending, etc.), and the musical was just horrible. (You can make something amusingly bad without actually torturing your audience in real-life.) But the rest of the episode could actually pass for Gilmore Girls. There are actually several funny moments in this episode, and people largely act like themselves instead of like alien corpses reanimated by Netflix designed to torture audiences. Some people actually use their brains in this episode (the ending not included). It was good to see and while still very flawed, it was way better than the first two episodes.

This is where this mini-series really gets going
cherold30 December 2016
I thought the first episode of this mini-series was pretty good, and the second a little better, but it wasn't until the third that I got what I really wanted: hilarity mixed with melancholy.

Much of the hilarity involves rehearsals for a hysterically funny bad musical, but even before that this episode was funnier than the two preceding it, offering the high degree of wit and silliness I recall from the original series.

Some people have complained that the musical section went on too long, but I loved it all. And then that serious number at the end was just so lovely and perfect.

I wish the first two episodes had been as good as the final two, but even one as good as this is a special prize.

Love the Gilmore Girls.

Love the Gilmore Girls but have a problem with the fact that Taylor totally blew off Sophie Blum/Carol King playing "I feel the Earth Move Under My Feet" and saying that it is not catchy. As someone who I is a huge Carol King fan. I was offended by this. It was the was the worst episode of the series. I don't like it when they do this performance theater crap. Let's stick to the Lorilei and Rory and forget this other stuff.

Why?
masazavrl-916997 February 2021
The writers didn't have enough material so we had to watch a 20 minute musical that made no sense... what a waste of time..

Musical was terrible
Zedyeti23 January 2021
I only wrote this review to say the musical part was so bad and lasted way too long. I actually ended up fast forwarded past it. Terrible. Also this revisit to Gilmore girls seems like it was a bad idea and more of a cash grab.

Why the musical?
southpawsid17 February 2021
The musical as a whole was a disaster, but the episode could have been saved if they kept the sining to a minute. When it went on for 15, it officially became the worst episode in Gilmore Girls' history.

Stop with the unrealistic writting and musicals.
MidoriAi3 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Rory, a Geisha is not a prost!tute, a wh ore or even a mistress, don't you know? (or maybe, mr palladino) Logan's fiancee moved into his apartment, now Rory has to wait for him in a hotel, "like a geisha". Well, what did you expect, Rory? Didn't you learned something being the other woman with married Dean? And what is all about writing this sh!t to Rory? Why this lame life? It is worse than Lane's.

A musical, great, just what we need.... >. > The rehearsals here annoying and exhausting to listen even tho they were not the focus of attention.

More rehearsals in front of a committee.. 11 minutes of that. Fast Forward moment.

At the pool, is it really a place were Rory and Lorelai would ever hang out? Or were Luke could act as a lifeguard given the fact that in one GG episode said he didn't know how to swim? He's pushing 60 years old. I don't think so. And what about those 2 kids holding those parasols to cover the sun for Lorelay and Rory and then following around Stars Hollow with their stuff like they are in child slavery.

The scene with the deformed fat guy in front of them was not funny either.

We can see much black people and the mention of gay a parade that Taylor wanted to do for them (now, Taylor and Michelle are gay -??!!) I can notice that the producers and writers took notice of all the ridiculous people complaints. I don't see any Russian ones, or Egyptians, maybe they will complain for the next AYIL and we will see more fake diversity, fake like all these scenes that can't help look like a tv studio.

Rory is upset because Stars Hollow Gazette is closing.. it pays nothing, so why does she wants to work in there instead of going for any other newspaper of USA? She has a great contact: Logan's father. She can use him, but I understand why she wont.

And having Taylor meddling in every thing the town has, even the newspaper like he has to approve what's going on is something that adds to the unreal scenes of GG.

Even tho they had computers that only run MS DOS, and 2 old crones beside Rory, she had a new issue of the newspaper like it was magic.

The secret bar: really ridiculous when they had to hide from Taylor.

We can see again Luke filling in at the Dragonfly Inn because there is no chef, like he has no business of his own to attend. Then Rory needs Lorelai's help, so she leaves Luke alone at the Inn while she went all over town to deliver the newspaper by hand in the middle of summer with no sweat to each and everyone, like in that little snow globe people doesn't know what's happening.

Is it bad to stay in bed on Saturday at noon? For Rory (palladino) it is!

Rory tried to get her professional life on track with an idea given by Jess: write a book. She started to write about her life, that obviously include Lorelai, she told her, and Lorelai freak out about it in front of mourners in the cemetery were they were. The idea that Lorelai is upset that Rory is going to write about their life and all the "secrets" of their intimacy would be out in the open is stup!d. It is the same MO writers of always use to provoke controversy and drama. It is cheap.

Another part were Lorelai started a fight in front of people was on the dinner. Pretty stupid and unrealistic. And if we are talking about unrealistic, let's talk about the ridiculous idea of Lorelai walking the Appalachian Trail. Yeah right. They even tried to make it funny. Didn't work.

Luke's character ends up a wimp that goes with the flow without emitting any opinion.
