Naturally, the biggest hurdle for any TV show based around food and drink is that taste is the sense that travels least efficiently through a screen. Even when presented with an exotic locale, you can imagine the sun on your skin or the bustle of a busy marketplace or the scent of an ocean breeze. But when presented with someone — particularly an expert in their field — who says that they’ve never tasted anything like what they’ve just ingested, you’re getting close to the realm of fantasy.
So it’s series like “The Wine Show” that best work around the problem by making food its main dish, but surrounding it with plenty of other courses. Some of those arrive in the form of its presenters: Season 3, now available to stream on Acorn and Sundance Now after premiering in the U.K. last fall, adds Dominic West to the existing trio of James Purefoy,...

The Wine Show Season 3 finds Dominic West joining Matthew Rhys, Matthew Goode, and James Purefoy to discover the unfettered joy of wine.
The latest season is based in the Quinta do Noval winery in Douro Valley, Portugal, an absolutely stunning location that will make you salivate for more than its wine.
As the new season kicks off, we have a couple of exclusive clips for your pre-season enjoyment.
The first is shortly after Purefoy welcomes West to the show.
Upon his arrival, West admits that he is an empty vessel just waiting to soak up knowledge about wine.
They're cooking with Madeira, and Joe Fattorini is more than willing to teach both James and newcomer West the details on this forgotten wine after discovering the beauty of Madeira with his touring partner, Amelia Singer, on one of their latest assignments.
They both knew very little about Madeira the location let alone the wine,...

When we catch up with Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: Picard, nearly two decades after we last saw him at the helm of the Enterprise, the former starship captain is living an idyllic life, sipping wine on his French vineyard and enjoying the company of his loyal dog (delightfully named Number One). And for those of us who grew up on Star Trek: The Next Generation and Patrick Stewart’s quietly commanding performance as Picard… we’d be happy just to watch that show, right? Jean-Luc could tour local vineyards with his pooch, trying out new vintages and quoting Shakespeare...

The first look at HBO’s upcoming Watchmen adaptation poses a very important question: “Who watches The Watchmen?”
The comic book-based series — penned by Damon Lindelof (The Leftovers, Lost) — is set in an alternate history where “superheroes” are treated as outlaws. Per HBO, the show “embraces the nostalgia of the original groundbreaking graphic novel while attempting to break new ground of its own.” The ensemble includes a who’s-who of acting vets and genre faves, including Regina King, Jeremy Irons, Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Adelaide Clemens, Andrew Howard, Tom Mison and Frances Fisher.

Veteran wine expert Joe Fattorini — who has sold wine to some of the best restaurants in the U.K. and also parsed his expertise as a wine correspondent for the Herald in Scotland — found himself in a bath of wine in Argentina about 15 years ago.
“I was taken on a press trip to Argentina,” says Fattorini, who along with Matthew Goode and Matthew Rhys (in season 1) and James Purefoy (season 2) present “The Wine Show,” seen on Channel 5 in the U.K. (it had previously aired in ITV), and Ovation in the U.S., as well as streaming on Hulu. “It was the early days of people filming themselves and putting them on YouTube, so I uploaded a film of me sitting in a bath of wine” talking about the beverage he was soaking in.
Although it didn’t go viral, “it had something like 104 views in 10 years,” “Wine Show” producer Melanie Jappy saw it,...

Retired Argentinian soccer star Hernan Crespo was in Cannes on Sunday to promote “The Soccer Show” at MipTV. The sales arm of Dick Clark Productions is handling the show’s distribution and international launch.
“It is important that people know about the former football players outside of the sport,” said Crespo, who played for major professional soccer teams including Lazio, Inter Milan, and Chelsea. He was also a member of Argentina’s national squad, and one of its highest ever goal-scorers.
The show’s segment on Crespo looks at his working and home life and includes a tour of the museum inside his house containing trophies and mementos from his successful career. “I try to explain about my family, lifestyle, my passions and hobbies,” he said.

Here at Et, we’re obsessed with a lot of things -- and here is what we’re most excited about this week:
Why We’re Obsessed With ‘The Wine Show’
Pour another glass because our favorite import -- Matthew Goode -- is back with a second season of The Wine Show, Sky Vision’s food and travel magazine series, which moves the action from Italy to the South of France. Available on in the U.S. on Hulu, the show became a favorite among viewers thanks to the bromance between Goode and co-host Matthew Rhys and their journey through the heart of Italy in search of tasty wine and lasting memories. Joining Goode (who also stars on The Crown season two) is James Purefoy, an equally English and handsome actor, who steps in for Rhys. This season, two hosts are tasked with finding a case of wine to match a six-course French lunch cooked by Stephane...

What do you look for in foodie TV?
You know what I’m talking about. One of two things happens:
You find yourself zoning out on a Saturday morning, staring blankly at your TV, and suddenly you become fascinated by the amateur chefs cooking for a chance at running their own restaurant. You make the conscious choice to sit down and invest in foodie TV, perhaps of the more artful variety — like “Chef’s Table.”
Basically, viewers are looking for something to either compliment shutting off their brain, something a little bolder, or something in between. “The Wine Show,” a British import brought to the States courtesy of Hulu, falls into the in between, offering up engaging and educational segments as it simultaneously tries to goof around and have a good time. While it finds its feet in this tricky duality as it progresses, the series’ biggest draw is also...
