Bret Easton Ellis’ series at HBO is inching closer to reality. HBO has tapped Kristoffer Borgli to direct the series adaptation of the Ellis book “The Shards.”
Borgli, who directed last year’s “Dream Scenario” starring Nicolas Cage and 2022’s “Sick of Myself,” is attached to direct and serve as an executive producer on the series that’s currently in development at HBO.
Ellis published “The Shards” just last year, and the series per its official logline is “set in the early ’80s and tracks a group of privileged Los Angeles High School friends as a serial killer strikes across the city.”
But what makes “The Shards” ripe for an adaptation is that it’s a pulpy and sexy yet sprawling and unwieldy piece of fiction featuring much of Ellis’ own biography. While it follows the murders of a serial killer known as The Trawler with great detail, it also...

Exclusive: Madeline Brewer has been cast in Netflix’s hit psychological drama You for the show’s fifth and final season.
In a series regular role, Brewer will portray Bronte, an enigmatic and free-spirited playwright who comes to work for Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) at his bookstore. As the two connect over literature and loss, she stokes in him a nostalgia for his former self, causing him to question everything his life has become.
You, based on Caroline Kepnes’ best-selling novel of the same name, revolves around the question, “What would you do for love?” The series follows Joe Goldberg, a man who will do just about anything when love is at stake.
Season 4 was set in London where Joe took on the new identity of Jonathan Moore, an English professor, while following Marienne (Tati Gabrielle) around Europe. Details regarding the focus...

Bret Easton Ellis is finally taking a seat in the director’s chair.
After his slated feature directorial debut “The Deleted” was pivoted into a web series on the since-defunct social platform Fullscreen, famed author and screenwriter Ellis will direct horror film “Relapse.” Ellis penned the script about a man (played by “Stranger Things” breakout Joseph Quinn) who witnesses a brutal death during a drug party and is thrust into an unsteady existential crisis upon entering rehab. Variety first reported the news of the project.
The film’s official synopsis reads: “Fueled by his unstable personality and the invading power of social media, Matt Cullen’s paranoia grows, messing up with his rehabilitation program. As he starts using again, a mysterious presence starts growing around Matt, and a monster that has been haunting him since he was a teenager reveals itself. Night of the Hunted, the latest film from Franck Khalfoun is a remake, but not of Jean Rollin’s 1980 paranoid thriller of the same name, though that would be a logical choice for rebooting in these conspiracy-riddled times. Instead, he and co-writer Glen Freyer have reworked and updated Rubén Ávila Calvo and David R.L.’s 2015 Spanish thriller Night of the Rat.
This film begins in a hotel room where Alice is talking to her husband on the phone, we hear something about an appointment with a fertility specialist before she hurriedly hangs up as John enters the room. Driving back to town in the pre-dawn darkness they make a stop for gas despite Jiohn’s insistence that he filled the tank the day before. Alice goes in to grab some snacks, and as...

Bret Easton Ellis’ latest novel “The Shards” goes where only Bret Easton Ellis could possibly go: back to 1981 Los Angeles with a 600-page book, largely unedited, that’s mostly about himself.
That’s partly because the main character is named Bret, a nihilistic, 17-year-old, bisexual San Fernando Valley trust-fund prep-school brat who’s writing a book called “Less Than Zero.” Yes, this is literary-horror autofiction from the author of that aforementioned 1985 debut and shocking postmodern novels like “American Psycho.”
“The Shards” is also a more-or-less direct transcript of the Patreon serial Ellis launched in late 2020, and its unwieldiness means it’s well-matched for a long-form, flashy series adaptation at HBO. As IndieWire has confirmed, “The Shards” is now being set up at the premium cabler with Ellis as the sole writer while executive producing with Nick Hall (Emmy-winning executive producer on “The White Lotus”) and Brian Young (an executive producer...

Fullscreen will shutter its eponymous subscription video service, CEO George Strompolos wrote in an email to staffers yesterday afternoon, in order to more actively invest in its creator network, brand-building, and Rooster Teeth divisions. As a result, the company is letting go of roughly 25 employees, a spokesperson said.
Strompolos -- who founded Fullscreen in 2011 -- called the decision tough, and said that he’s “extremely proud” of the service, which launched in April 2016 and has subsequently served as a launchpad for shows like Jack And Dean Of All Trades; Bret Easton Ellis’ directorial debut, The Deleted (pictured above); Brandon Rogers’ Magic Funhouse; video podcasts by Tyler Oakley and Grace Helbig; and, most recently, the Hazel Hayes thriller PrankMe.

The newest series on the Fullscreen subscription video on-demand (Svod) service is something a little different. It’s called The Deleted, it serves as the directorial debut of American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis, and it features social media stars like Nash Grier and Amanda Cerny.
The Deleted, which was announced alongside the Fullscreen Svod service back in April, is Easton Ellis’ latest attempt to offer a satirical comment on vice and youth culture. This time, his plot is routed through a mysterious cult; the show’s protagonists, including Grier’s character, are escapees of that cult who find themselves addicted to drugs. If you’ve ever read one of Easton Ellis’ books, you’ll know his work tends to be rather graphic, and as The Deleted’s poster (pictured above) shows, this is no exception.
What makes The Deleted such an interesting project is the stark divide between Easton Ellis’ fans and,...

Frank (Michael Shannon) and Lola (Imogen Poots) are fumbling around the fringes of a relationship, two self-diagnosed fuck-ups who wrestle with the fear that they’re wounds run too deep to be touched without flinching. “I just don’t think I’m going to be any good at this,” Frank tells Lola as they elliptically discuss their potential future together. He’s not kidding. Writer-director Matt Ross’ dull and diffuse feature debut may never figure out what kind of story it wants to tell, but its title characters know exactly who they are — they’re cursed by that knowledge.
A muted film that begins with a stilted romance and then strains to incorporate 50 shades of erotic psychodrama and a few splashes of neo-noir for good measure, “Frank & Lola” is scattershot from the start, and never makes a compelling case for why its story is being told. It begins in bed,...

Chicago’s hottest club is a midtown tech company called Zenotek Data Storage Systems, and it has everything: Santa Claus sitting on the Iron Throne, Kate McKinnon playing a flatulent Hr lady, and — most importantly — a lethal dose of Baniston (that’s that thing where Jason Bateman and Jennifer Aniston exhume the toxic non-chemistry they’ve already brought to four other, even more excruciating comedies). 50 times longer than the unrelated “SNL” sketch of the same name and somehow featuring half as many laughs, “Office Christmas Party” is the perfect holiday movie for that one dude at your job who still quotes “Wedding Crashers” every time you’re forced to interact with him, screaming “You shut your mouth when you’re talking to me!” in a crowded elevator that’s filled with strangers who work on other floors. You know who I’m talking about.

‘The Founder’ Review: Michael Keaton Is the Best Thing About This Overcooked McDonald’s Origin Story
As Michael Keaton settles into the peak era of his acting career, his wizened features and melancholic gaze make him perfectly suited for subtle desperation. It was only a matter of time before he channeled the plight of a struggling salesman, and “The Founder” provides the actor with that ideal vessel.
As Ray Kroc, the McDonald’s executive who swindled the franchise’s founders out of their stake in the company, Keaton effectively swings from Willie Loman to Walter White. The movie gives him just enough material to elevate an otherwise straightforward drama that, while littered with smart and subtle moments, has all the depth of a Wikipedia entry. “The Founder” provides some intriguing backstory to a franchise largely taken for granted in American society, and Robert Siegel’s screenplay carries it along well enough through all the expected beats. Keaton, however, makes them credible. It’s his show.

Judging solely from the number of bare butts in the first five minutes of “The Deleted,” one might think Bret Easton Ellis assumes there is a direct correlation between cheeks out and thumbs up. Adding the intrigue of a nefarious organization chasing down and drugging the randy would-be models in hiding, and “The Deleted” exploits just about every Hollywood trope imaginable. It’s clickbait storytelling — told with classic Ellis flair.

Following director Mary Harron’s recent “Anatomy of a Scene” video for the New York Times, one of the most famous sequences in “American Psycho” has a new look. Mara Wilson, late of “Matilda” and more recently a prominent voice on social media, stars in this female-led version of the business-card scene that birthed the famous line, “Oh my god, it even has a watermark.” (Warning: If the you consider the very notion of an all-female “Ghostbusters” a personal affront, this may not be the video for you.)
