What's App
kosmasp27 November 2021
Now while it may seem impossible to believe for some, there are still a few people out there, who do not have a smart phone. A phone that uses apps - no they have cellphones that actually are only good for one thing. Well ok multiple things, if you use them as clock, to message and certain other things included. But they do not have apps or many other possibilities that the smart phones have. So my summary question would be ... apt for those people.

But if you have read a few of my reviews (I have written a couple or more), than you know there is more to it. Well hopefully you have realized that by now that is. And there is also more to this movie - yes it does have cliches, yes it is flawed in certain aspects. But it is so much fun and if you nitpick, you are able to destroy that fun the movie is able to give you.

Some interesting ideas, though most things will be predictable. Having said that, it has a lot of heart and the charisma of the people involved is really good. Not to mention some really cool casting choices (and beautiful ones as well - for both genders that is). So sit back, make a wish and ... well maybe not, just let the movie work its magic (a my puns - you've missed them, yes?)

Mild high school fantasy
neil-4761 May 2018
Warning: Spoilers
High schooler Kyle feels out of place until he acquires a mysterious and magical app which grants him the ability to be successful in assorted popular high school activities. He thus becomes a hot lead in the high school musical (and cute singer/songwriter Dani falls for him), plus he also becomes a star ice hockey player, which raises him as a target for high school princess Charlotte. Kyle has to decide which path to follow, and how to put right the things which have gone wrong on the way.

This high school fantasy romcom is utterly formulaic and contains no surprises whatsoever. It's not unpleasant, the leads are attractive and fulfil their part in the proceedings well enough (although I never bought into Kyle being isolated), and the final musical number is effective.

Famke Janssen puts in an unexpectedly funny turn as a Mom with too much wine oh her hands.

This is a tolerable time-passer.

Solid Teenage Flick
mmevanille-5309731 May 2018
Looking at this film from the perspective of its target audience, which is basically teens/young adults, It quite a solid film. A story about being true to yourself, but its told in a unique way. Actors did fine, plot was well written if maybe slightly over the top at times. Its hard to write a film about wishes coming true because the wording of any wish can always be open to interpretation, but I think Status Update captures the magic of it quite well. The pace is good, Cinematics fine for a lower budget film. I wouldn't call it an overly funny film, although it does have its moments.

If you or your children like Glee, then you will probably like this. Its worth a watch if you like the Teenage Fantasy genre and a bit of fun; But not one for serious critics, hence some of the previous reviews.

Good teenage romatic comedy.
pierrepecher25 November 2018
Good teenage romatic comedy. Indeed, sometimes unpredicatable plot with elements of fantasitic, humour. This is a high-school young boy fantasy. Everything happens like in a dream.

Great soundtrack
magnetists1 August 2019
Movie in overall wasn't the best, there were also some issues with voiceovers, but the soundtrack was terrific. Especially "Drowning". What a shame it isn't in spotify. Would listen to it 24/7.

Not great
gemzee4 January 2019
Pretty predictable film. There are a few things in this film that to me would deem it more as a 15 rather than 12A

Just adding information to a review
dragondreamsu27 August 2020
It was ok, but I'm writing this review because I can't seem to find a way to simply respond to another review which neglected to mention that the actor,Ross who portraid Kyle Moore in the movie also starred in the Disney channel show "Austin and Allie"and various other shows and movies.

Sweet lazy Sunday film
bestford17 February 2020
Not sure why so much hate. This was yes cheesy and predictable but it was funny and sweet. I'm from the era of footloose, ghost, dirty dancing when cheese was in. It was a nice Change from gore and super heroes and fast cars...

Horrible hair
luciabcn8618 February 2020
The movie is alright, but his hair drove me nuts. Bleached blonde wavy hair (on a guy aswell). Yuk! I think I could have enjoyed it more if his hair was less annoying.

A Boring Status
sampah7011 September 2018
Boring, predictable regular/common plot in every american flicks: A pathetic a$$shole, cheater and liar; with some cheap cheesy redemption, become a hero (or the chosen one).

But hey, that's everyone (read: every american) normal character and philosophy. And as long as I'm a winner at the end of the story, da fux with everybody everything else.

Fun diversion, magic phone app gives new guy an edge.
TxMike3 January 2021
There are several themes going on here, including a family breaking up, but the main theme is the California skate boarder who has to move to Connecticut and enter a new high school where ice hockey reigns. The usual scripted bullying starts right away and the new guy has to find a way to overcome it.

In a hallway incident one of the hockey jocks destroys the new boy's phone and when he goes to the mall to see if it can be repaired a mysterious man (reminded me of the Don Knotts role in 'Pleasantville') at a kiosk offers him a phone app which basically anything he types into his status update become reality. Martial arts master, got it. Good singer, got it. Play like a pro hockey player, got it.

So it is all juvenile silliness, guy gets the girl, loses the girl, gets revenge, but eventually realizes he isn't being true to himself and others. But I enjoyed it, all of it, the novelty of the approach, the temporary escape from reality. Not high art but more entertaining than a comedy TV series.

Of note a minor character, sister of the boy, is played by Brec Bassinger, a young actress who this past year starred in a TV series "Stargirl." It was fun to see her before her big breakout.

I watched it at home on Amazon streaming movies.

Silly high-school movie ,, but it was actually enjoyable
Aktham_Tashtush11 November 2018
The plot looked kinda genuine and there were few moments of quick comedy ,, but in the end you couldn't help but realize it is still a silly highschool movie.

The script wasn't strong or as much connected as i expected and the production didn't help either ,, i looked much like one of these Lifetime Movies,, meaning it was okay but it still loos cheap .

Anyway, the cast were okay too ,, i think if they had brought up a known actor to the cast and i mean for the lead roles other than "Rob Riggle, John Michael Higgins and the mom, gosh i forgot her name", the movie would have turned a bit differently.

Overall, it is a nice family movie with a mediocre amount of comedy and the fantasy side of the story was oganaised too.

Such a "feel good" movie. Love it!
keatongroom8 December 2018
The film carries a great message and is really well directed with the story just flowing and falling into place. It's got a great bit of romance, comedy and some drama to it and I would definitely recommend teenagers to watch it!

If you skip a Status Update, did it happen?
Kamurai2512 April 2020
Empty watch, will not watch again, and can't recommend.

While this has a fairly incredible premise, it's not completely original: basically it's a modern day monkey's paw, without it killing the wisher.

The story seemed solid at the time, but it's mostly unoriginal and forced on the delivery. It honestly doesn't balance the multiple story threads well which throws the pacing off and distracts from the climax.

Honestly surprised Higgins and Riggle attached themselves to this, let alone Famke Jansen in her most ridiculous role ever.

First movie that made me cry...
jasonnect10 November 2018
It isn't of any kind special, but the story between him, her and his dad was brilliant. The final song on the stage gave me the tears, and I've never experienced that in a movie, I just want to say it is worth watching on your casual Friday.

:)

Run of the mill high school fantasy flick
wrxsti5420 December 2020
The movie revolves around newcomer California skater/surfer high school senior Kyle (Ross Lynch) at a hockey mad school in Connecticut who stumbles on a magic App from a bizarre mall phone repair guy that grants Kyle's every wish which of course is to be good at things that make him popular. The plot from there is utterly predictable.

This movie suffers from poor plot pace, stereotypical characters (bullied nerd, obnoxious jock, cute wooable girl, jealous gay performer) and an equally predictable story line. Ross Lynch wrote the book on blond surfer dude so his lead performance is easy. It does get tiresome seeing movies about high school played by twenty something actors. The movie was plastic enough already without that added layer of inauthenticity.

The Magic App
bkoganbing11 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Ross Lynch, Olivia Holt and Gregg Sulkin all Disney Channel veterans star in this film about a new kid in school who while at a phone kiosk in a mall gets himself a magic phone app where all he has to do is update his status as one does on Facebook and you are what you write. Wouldn't have I liked to have what Lynch has acquired.

Of course one has to be very careful in the words you write. For example Lynch writes in his music he's classically trained. When it comes to an audition Lynch opens his mouth and out comes the Habanera from Carmen. We never do find out how he explained that away.

All new kids are a zero socially, but with the help of the app Lynch becomes the big man on campus. He even steals Courtney Eaton whom he is dating in real life from former big man on campus Gregg Sulkin and almost loses good girl Olivia Holt in the process.

Not only the presence of the Disney Channel veterans, but the material itself makes one feel you never left the Magic Kingdom. Still it's entertaining and easy to take.

I liked it
billteller7 August 2021
Don't kid yourself, this is a Disney movie without the mouse influence. Yes it's a bit formulaic and predictable. But it's well done. A nice family movie with a few swear words.

Mediocre
mrpotatochip1 September 2018
STATUS UPDATE is a mediocre that runs a little bit longer then I would have liked but I managed to stick it out to the end. It is not the kind of movie that I would ever like to watch again nor is it the one I would recommend to my friends but I will add that it is not terrible. It was mildly entertaining at times. Certainly enough so that I watched the whole thing and was not too bored although I did not give it much of a though afterward and it is doubtful I will even remember it a year from now.

Status barely watchable
opticuscro22 November 2020
A very interesting concept (an application that changes things), everything else a total failure not to mention the totally wrong messages and values it sends to the younger audience who are watching.
