Thomas Hanley on 'On the Waterfront' (2013)

**** (out of 4)

The Criterion Collection went all out for their release of ON THE WATERFRONT and this twelve minute interview with Thomas Hanley is one of thee best supplements. He played the young kid Tommy who was the friend of Marlon Brando in the movie. Man, what stories are told here because not only did he work on the film but he ended up working on the real waterfront later in life. He tells some wonderful stories about how he was hired, what Elia Kazan was like and how everyone got along with Marlon Brando. He also talks about the various locations used in the film and also tells great stories about the real waterfront and the crime there. This here was certainly one of the best featurettes I've ever seen because of the great stories told and how much detail we're given about the movie and the real locations. You really get a wonderful idea of what it was like living in the town and having a Hollywood production come to it and you getting hired for what would turn out to be a landmark movie.

And all these years they got his name wrong!

Just a bit of trivia I picked up from a New York Times interview by Ralph Blumenthal with Thomas Hanley published August 6, 2009. (Just after the death of Budd Schulberg.) In the article Hanley recounts how his last name was mangled in the 'Waterfront' credits into 'Handley', Poor kid, his father was murdered on the docks for doing the right thing; Young Thomas was gypped out of a promised start to his acting career by an agent who conned the kid's Mother (after one walk-on TV appearance on the "Red Buttons Show", the Agent disappeared). I think that Thomas had a touch of Brando's style and swagger to him. And he certainly had a gritty hard scrabble life growing up on the docks. Check out the interview before you watch 'On the Waterfront' again!
