A stunning short, worth looking at.

I came across this one on Facebook funny enough, and it has to be one of the strongest shorts I've seen in a really long time. Expertly shot, and featuring impressive creature design when it comes to the titular creature, this shows what can be done with 5 minutes of run time. While the film certainly opens itself up for a feature, or for more, it still manages to contain and communicate a full story in a short amount of time.

The Birch is written and directed by Ben Franklin and Anthony Meltin, with a story credit for Cliff Wallace. The trio present a fantastic story set in a very unique and interesting world, and allowing for the development of a genuinely frightening mythology. It feels deep and complete, and almost doesn't need any more than it gives you. It's well directed, and the cinematography is great; it's clear that there is a pretty large budget behind the film, but it was put to extremely good use.

On top of a great creative team, you have a fabulous cast. Corrina Marlow plays the ailing grandmother, her role is small but effective; Charlie Venables plays Kris, and Aaron Ward plays his nemesis Shaun. You also have Dee Sherwood Wallace as The Birch, and her physical performance is great, but it's the make up effects that really add impact to the character.

There are some very clear influences in the creature design, my brain immediately flashed to Guillermo Del Toro's films, and while the design could be accused of copying him I think it has enough of it's own flavour and does feel more like an influence or homage than direct copying. It almost seems to be a merging of Del Toro and Alex Pardee, which isn't something you'll ever hear me complain about. The gore effects are well executed too, and really add to the quality of the film.

There's really not much else to say about this one except that you should check it out. A great short, and I look forward to watching what these filmmakers come out with next.

The Birch: Visually impressive but minimal content short
Platypuschow12 November 2017
This British made Crypt TV short horror is an interesting creature, in that it reminded me of Pans Labyrinth (2006) Standing at less than 4 minutes there isn't much of a story as there really couldn't be but the creators manage to grip the viewer and deliver a visually interesting and very memorable finale.

The trouble is for me it's one of those shorts that didn't work for that reason, the reason being that it didn't have time to develop and was practically a "Vine".

All the respect in the world for creating a tantalising tease of a story and fantastic visual effects but this should have been something a tad longer.

The Good:

Creature looked stunning

Real potential for something more substantial

The Bad:

Far too short for that level of content

Things I Learnt From This Short:

Why does that kid get a tree protector woman thingy? I want a tree protector woman thingy!

Great Creature, Nothing Else
timothygartin26 October 2019
This is a very short horror movie with very little substance. It is a standard story of tormented kid who is protected by a supernatural being. Its been done a million times. The real lure on this movie is the creature effects. The Birch is really scary looking. The art design and practical effects for this creature are amazing. It is worth watching for this alone which is good because there isn't much more here.

more than inspired horror

it impress. for cinematography, for performances, for landscape, for the clash between boys. but, more important, for splendid story. because the story reminds small significant facts who easy are ignored. first, obvious, bulling . second - the need of protection for vulnerable people solved by the return to nature forces. not the last, for me the essential detail, the strong link between grandmother and nephew . and the tradition as fundamental legacy for the right way of life. at first sigh - an admirable horror. at the second - a fairy tale. in fact - simple remind. about the force of pure heart.

Has Potential

Warning: Spoilers
While I didn't initially enjoy this one very much, I definitely think the Birch has a lot of potential for a series. The Birch herself is a pretty cool looking monster and while her motivations felt inconsistent (first, she seemed like a protector of one person, then she only cared when someone broke her charm thing, then she suddenly became a protector again), she did have a pretty brutal kill to make up for it. Like I said, it has potential.

Those Bullies Need to Watch Out
Hitchcoc24 April 2019
A quiet young man with an ill grandmother (?) is tormented by bully. The guy is brutal. What he doesn't know is that there is a protector in the woods that can unleash incredible terror and destruction. Apparently, what happens has happened before. But we are sort of left in the lurch because the tale ends abruptly.

Life's a Birch and then ya die!
A desperate bullied boy who is chased into the nearby town woods one day by his vicious tormentor, summons up the lethal forest protector who's legend was entrusted to him by his ailing grandmother to rid him of his problem, and that's pretty much it! I do agree that as a horror short this is a little thin...but that's something that can be said of the majority of the macabre shorts that appear on the cool Crypt TV Youtube channel, and most of the time it can't really be avoided when something's only four minutes long, plus who really cares when you have a monster that's as well-presented and awesome looking as the Birch! Tons of the Crypt TV shorts feature really terrifically done practical makeup effect monsters as the punchline, and the dreaded eerily regal Birch is one of the most impressive ones. It's so richly detailed and looks frightening but kind of benevolent at the same time, like the harsh and beautiful face of nature itself in corporeal form who ruthlessly protects the sanctity of the wild, or an innocent... The creature did make think of Guillermo Del Toro right away too, specifically the Dark Angel from Hellboy 2, but to me it feels more like a light homage than a ripoff, I think Del Toro would be impressed with the design. I really love to see something physical like that these days when everything of the big fantasy of horror movies is all overblown cgi, it's refreshing to see that much craftsmanship put into something, we need to see a little more of that again. So I personally liked this short for its titular monster and not too much else, not that there was anything wrong with the acting or whatever.. It's just that everything seemed a little bland in comparison, but it is good and well worth a look if you enjoy the odd horror fantasy short about deadly ancient primeval spirits of the deep dark woods! Good stuff, it's bite is better than its bark(!) x

"Look for her mark"

"For thee who makest me, I shall come. He who breaks me will come undone."

How to deal with your bully
Horst_In_Translation6 January 2017
Warning: Spoilers
"The Birch" is a Bristish 4-minute short film from 2016 written and directed by Ben Franklin and Anthony Melton. So yeah, it is really short, but even taking this into account I cannot say I am impressed. It is basically the story of a teenager who gets bullied by another student. Thanks to his grandmother(?), however, and a really scary tree spirit his problem gets solved. As IMDb categorizes this film as horror, you can probably already imagine how. It's not about the acting really here, so you cannot blame the actors, but I found the story generally not too interesting and the lack of chronology also hurts the film's atmospheric impact in my opinion. I have to give this one a thumbs-down and I hope the filmmaker duo here can step things up for upcoming projects, especially when it comes to full feature films. From what I have seen here, I am not too curious about their body of work and other movies by them. Not recommended.
