Sky is seeking inspiration from Happy Valley for its next hit show as programs boss Zai Bennett says the pay-tv giant is taking a ‘less is more’ approach to original content.
Speaking at a Broadcasting Press Guild event this morning, Sky Studios Director of Original Drama Meghan Lyvers said conversations are taking place with producers about shows that have “an investigative spine with complicated, dysfunctional, flawed, human and relatable characters at the center,” evoking Happy Valley star Sarah Lancashire’s Catherine Cawood.
She responded “perhaps yes” when questioned if the next big Sky drama could be led by a Cawood-esque figure and talked up the way in which the BBC One/AMC+ sensation places an older woman front and centre of the story. A similar show, the Kate Winslet-starring Mare of Easttown, was launched by Sky and HBO in 2021 to critical acclaim.

Brooke Shields became a star and attracted mild controversy in this show, director Louis Malle’s first American production. Co-writer & producer Polly Platt and cinematographer Sven Nykvist collaborated on Malle’s fascinating look at life in a New Orleans brothel early in the 20th century. Prostitute Susan Sarandon raises two children in the upscale bawdy house, and art photographer Keith Carradine becomes an artist in residence. It’s a non-moralizing portrait of a bygone lifestyle. The handsome remastered release co-stars Diana Scarwid and Barbara Steele — and comes with a new interview with Brooke Shields.

Though many of the films that are being talked about during awards season debuted in the latter part of the year, one of our favorite films of 2019 is a project we first saw all the way back in January. Minhal Baig’s latest film, “Hala,” is a beautifully shot coming-of-age story that is unlike anything else you’ll see all year. And part of the reason we can’t seem to stop thinking about “Hala” is the beautiful score from composer Mandy Hoffman (“The Lovers”).

Michelle Pfeiffer, Tracy Letts and Academy Award-nominee Lucas Hedges have signed on to star in the surrealist comedy “French Exit,” based on the international best-selling book by Patrick deWitt.
DeWitt (“The Sisters Brothers”) adapted his novel for the big screen, and Azazel Jacobs (“The Lovers”) is set to direct the film.
The film will follow 60-year-old penniless Manhattan socialite Frances Price (Pfeiffer), whose plan it was “to die before the money ran out,” but things didn’t go as planned. Price’s husband Franklin has been dead for 20 years and with his vast inheritance gone, she cashes in the last of her possessions and resolves to live out her twilight days anonymously in a modest apartment in Paris, accompanied by her directionless son, Malcolm (Hedges), and the embodiment of Franklin in the form of “Small Frank” (Letts), the family cat.

"Henry Rose" comes in 5 scents
We expected to get Pfeiffer news this year with the upcoming publicity tours for both Avengers 4 and Maleficent 2 on the way but it appears it's not just cameos and supporting roles this year but a full-blown work schedule. In addition to those two films, she's just launched her fragrance line "Henry Rose" ($120 a bottle. Steep!) which we knew was coming but not quite when. What we didn't realize it's that it's a fully self-funded passion project (though Lapfeiffer declines to say how much money she spent). After realizing that the fragrance business was very non-forthcoming about ingredients, some of which can be toxic, damaging the environment or your health, she stopped wearing perfume for 10 years and created her own. The line of five different unisex fragrances is fully transparent and safe in a recyclable bottle; Pfans will think the name sounds familiar...

Irony of ironies, Franklin Schaffner’s 1965 epic, The War Lord, was based on a play called The Lovers. Stalwart Charlton Heston plays a medieval knight tasked with defending a Druid village where he promptly falls in love with local lass Rosemary Forsyth. Richard Boone co-stars along with Maurice Evans who would reunite with Schaffner and Heston under far different circumstances in 1968’s Planet of the Apes.

Melora Walters was sold on making a guest appearance in “Law and Order: Special Victims Unit” when she found out the episode was inspired by Ingmar Bergman‘s “Persona” (1966). “It’s not a typical episode,” she explains. “It’s very much like a film or a play.” In this 19th season installment, entitled “Something Happened,” the actress plays a rape victim whose memory loss forces Detective Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) to open up about her own dark secrets. “It’s the kind of role that I would dream of,” she adds. Indie distributor A24 rarely leads a marketing push with awards at the fore. After all, movies like Alex Garland’s sci-fi thriller “Ex Machina,” Lenny Abrahamson’s unsettling adaptation “Room” and Barry Jenkins’ micro-budgeted intersectionality drama “Moonlight” don’t exactly scream “Oscar!” from the outset. But the New York-based company nevertheless found an awards-season stride with those films and more.

Winners of the 2018 Independent Spirit Awards were revealed on March 3, one day before the Oscars. Many of the leading Academy Awards contenders were in the running here first, including “Call Me By Your Name,” “which reaped a leading six nominations, five-time nominee “Get Out,” and four-time contender “Lady Bird.” While “Three Billboards Outside, Ebbing Missouri” only reaped three bids here and was snubbed in the top race, it is the frontrunner to win Best Picture at the Oscars. Its closest rival there, “The Shape of Water,” was shut out of these precursor prizes.

Who will win the Independent Spirit Awards when they’re handed out this weekend on Saturday, March 3, at a ceremony hosted by Nick Kroll and John Mulaney? These awards, traditionally held the day before the Academy Awards, specifically celebrate low-budget and indie films produced for less than $20 million, which excludes Oscar fare like “Dunkirk,” “Phantom Thread” and “The Post.” But there are still numerous Oscar contenders in the Spirit Awards lineup, so these kudos could still give us a preview of what’s to come, especially when you consider that the Spirits presaged the Oscar upsets by “Spotlight” (2015) and “Moonlight” (2016) in the last two years. Scroll down for our complete predictions in 11 categories ranked in order of their racetrack odds. The projected winners are highlighted in gold.
These odds were generated by combining the predictions of more than 1,800 Gold Derby users who have entered their picks in our predictions center thus far.

“Get Out” has kicked “Lady Bird” out of the top spot in our Independent Spirit Awards Best Screenplay predictions. As recently as last Friday, Greta Gerwig’s coming-of-age tale was still leading our combined odds, but it’s now tumbled down to second place as Saturday’s ceremony draws near.
With the support of seven Experts, three Editors and nine Top 24 Users, who scored the best last year, Writers Guild Awards champ “Get Out” has a leading 1/1 odds to grab another screenplay win for Jordan Peele this season. “Lady Bird,” still the choice of three Experts, one Editor and 10 Top 24 Users, has fallen to 15/8 odds. “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” their biggest Oscar rival for Best Original Screenplay, is in third with 4/1 odds, followed by “Beatriz at Dinner” (66/1 odds) and “The Lovers” (100/1 odds).

The Oscar nominated coming-of-age film Lady Bird has been making a lot of buzz in the world of cinema. The film is nominated for several awards at the upcoming Oscars including Best Film, Best Director (Greta Gerwig), and Best Original Screenplay. The film stars Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird) and Laurie Metcalf who have a complexed mother-daughter relationship. Below is the synopsis and details on its in-home release.
In Lady Bird, Greta Gerwig reveals herself to be a bold new cinematic voice with her directorial debut, excavating both the humor and pathos in the turbulent bond between a mother and her teenage daughter. Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson (Ronan) fights against, but is exactly like, her wildly loving, deeply opinionated and strong-willed mom (Metcalf), a nurse working tirelessly to keep her family afloat after Lady Bird’s father (Letts) loses his job. Set in Sacramento, California, in 2002, amidst a rapidly shifting American economic landscape,...

This article marks Part 21, the final chapter of the 21-part Gold Derby series analyzing Meryl Streep at the Oscars. Join us as we look back at Meryl Streep’s nominations, the performances that competed with her at the Academy Awards, the results of each race and the overall rankings of the contenders.
In 1977, while Meryl Streep was making her film debut in “Julia,” Steven Spielberg was still basking in the smashing success of “Jaws” (1975). Spielberg’s follow-up that year, “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” may not have shattered box office records like “Jaws” but it did earn the filmmaker his first Oscar nomination in Best Director.
Over the following 40 years, Streep and Spielberg would lock down 21 and 17 Oscar nominations respectively, with each scoring three victories. While their paths would occasionally cross on Oscar night – Streep’s victory for “Sophie’s Choice” (1982) fell on the same evening Spielberg’s “E.

Lady Bird’s wings have been clipped since winning two trophies at the Golden Globes Awards, having come up empty at every stop since then. That stalled momentum has seen both “Get Out” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” overtake it for Best Original Screenplay in our Oscar odds, but it’s still in the lead for the screenplay prize at the Independent Spirit Awards.
Our latest predictions have Greta Gerwig with 9/10 odds to snag Best Screenplay for her “Lady Bird” script, ahead of “Get Out” (13/5 odds), “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” (5/1 odds), “Beatriz at Dinner” (66/1 odds) and “The Lovers” (100/1 odds).
Unlike at the Oscars, this is the only category where “Lady Bird,” “Get Out” and “Three Billboards” are going head-to-head. Gerwig and “Three Billboards”’ Martin McDonagh were not nominated for Best Director and “Three Billboards” was snubbed in Best Feature; “Get Out” is in first place in both races.

While it’s been a rough 2017 overall, It’s been a phenomenal year in film. With that being said, below is a list ranking what I believe are the top 20 films of 2017. It was painstakingly difficult cutting my list of 100 to 50, but even harder from 50 to 20. Some notable films that barely missed the cut include: “Wakefield,” “The Lovers,” “Wonder Woman,” “Baby Driver,” “Super Dark Times,” “It,” “Split,” “Personal Shopper,” “Columbus,” “Menashe” “and yes, I left out the fan favorite, “Dunkirk.” I also want to mention that there are films that I have excluded because I have yet to see them, such as: “Phantom Thread,” “The Darkest Hour,” “Bpm,” and “Molly’s Game” just to name a few.

Call Me by Your Name, Get Out and Lady Bird all had great showings at the 2018 Independent Spirit Award nominations!
The nominees were announced on Tuesday morning, with the Armie Hammer-ledCall Me by Your Name leading the pack with six nominations, followed closely by Jordan Peele's critically acclaimed, genre-bending thriller Get Out with five, and Lady Bird, with four.
All three films are competing for Best Picture, along with The Florida Project and The Rider. The Independent Spirit Awards are sometimes seen as a tea leaf for how the Academy Awards will sway -- the Best Picture winner of this show has gone on to also earn the distinction at the Oscars for five out of the last six years.

This hasn’t exactly been a great year for men. The male brand has seen better days. The product is still the same as it’s been for the last few millennia — the patriarchy is one hell of a preservative — but its iron hold on the marketplace is slipping. Society as a whole is finally coming to grips with a grim fact that so many people had already learned the hard way, that so many people had been silenced and shamed into keeping like a secret: Men are defective.
That’s not to say that all men are broken, but rather that all men are capable of the abuses for which the worst of us are now being ex-communicated, that all men are culpable for allowing those abuses to continue, and that all men are corruptible when endowed with the power that we have always assumed as a natural right.

Lady Bird is one of the year’s great joys. Greta Gerwig’s debut as a solo writer-director is so wise, so funny, and so remarkably assured that it seems to have flown in out of nowhere. Where did this nearly perfect coming-of-age comedy and emotionally affecting study of youth, social status, and financial malaise come from? The answer has been hiding in plain sight. As an actress, Gerwig has shown inimitable intelligence in films such as Frances Ha and 20th Century Women. She has now moved behind the camera for a 2002-set study of a Sacramento teen’s final year of high school, starring Saoirse Ronan, Laurie Metcalf, Tracy Letts, Lucas Hedges, and Timothée Chalamet, with music by Jon Brion.

If Twin Peaks was an actual mountain range with two scalable peaks, well, congratulations. You’ve reached the top of hike No. 1.
David Lynch’s 18-hour sequel season has aired nine “parts,” and anyone who’s stuck with it week-to-week, through all the cube staring, floor sweeping, and skull-crushing ghost hobos, knows it’s already been quite a trip.
But are you ready for more? Are we, as a society, prepared for another nine-hour climb through the dense forest of Lynch’s dreams?
When this journey started just seven weeks ago, no one knew what to expect. The secrecy implemented by Showtime and Lynch was unprecedented. There were (and are) no screeners for critics. Advertising was stripped of all images from the new season. Interviews were scarce, and stars weren’t allowed to say anything anyway. The Year's First Half Is Over! But rather than wait for this "halfway mark" for year in review listicles we started at the end of the 1st quarter so you'll have to combine those lists (movies / actresses / actors) with the highlights from your host's April through June screenings for a complete "halfway mark" take. Got it? Unlike many critics orgs and the Oscars, The Film Experience believes that moviegoing is a 12 month long activity and each month can hold worthy efforts. Here are 4 or 5 highlights of what we've seen the past three months per Oscar category in alpha order. How will they measure up to what's still to come?
Key movies I regret missing this quarter: Beatriz at Dinner, Hero, Gifted, Manifesto, and Their Finest
