I think it's a sign of the times with bizarre tv becoming somewhat the norm (or I'm a complete and utter turnip) that I didn't realise this was a mockumentary and didn't even recognise that the guru fella was Owen Wilson. Then about three quarters of the way through birdbrain here thought hang on a minute, not only is this absolutely nuts but there are some striking parallels to some of the characters in Wild Wild Country. Then I googled it and realised I am indeed a turnip, it is a mockumentary and quite an amusing one at that.

Brilliant. Unpredictable. Silly as hell.

You don't have to have seen Wild Wild Country to enjoy this two parter. The second part is even better, due in part to a veteran actor who I won't name in case you don't want it spoiled. Owen is so great here, his humor is so subtle but he basically plays a pathetic Osho.
The humor in Doc Now! Is very witty and subtle and best if you enjoy mockumentaries such as Christopher Guest's classics. You kind of forget they're fake sometimes, they're just so good at it.

Actually based on real Oregon cult

This isn't a look at 60s counterculture. It's an hilarious send up to a true story. The characters are based on real people and a real town that was overrun and outmaneuvered by a very large sex cult. If you'd like to see the original documentary, watch Wild, Wild Country!
Nothing better on.
