When one ponders the filmography of Douglas Sirk, one languishes in his successful meditation on stifled American lives in his 1950s soapy melodramas, the period with which he would eventually be most celebrated. It’s now unavoidable to speak of Sirk without mentioning the influence of his films from this decade on Todd Haynes or Rainer Werner Fassbinder. But it’s a select number of titles, some of them remakes of earlier Hollywood melodramas themselves, which take up the bulk of the conversation. But for all the hyperbolic anguish of a Magnificent Obsession or the detrimental social issues of All That Heaven Allows and Imitation of Life, Sirk also completed a handful of highly insightful, more psychologically attuned portraits, one of the best being 1955’s There’s Always Tomorrow (released the same year as Heaven and the little seen Rock Hudson period piece Captain Lightfoot).…...

“My temper was explosive… perhaps I was trying to level with my fists what I assumed fate had put above me.” – To Hell and Back, Audie Murphy, 1949
A remarkably self-aware assessment for such an angry young man. To hear him tell it, Audie Murphy came out of the cradle itching for a fight—when Pearl Harbor was attacked, he got one. He was only 16 at the time so he marched down to the recruiting center and lied about his age. In 1945 Murphy left the Army as the most-decorated soldier of World War II. In 1971 his twin-engine plane crashed into a mountainside in Virginia’s Roanoke County killing everyone on board. In the 26 years between the end of the war...

Upload is a new series from the creator of the American version of The Office, Greg Daniels, and is streaming exclusively on Amazon Prime.
In 2033, people that are about to die are able to “upload” their memories and consciousness to a hard drive, which then can be uploaded to a virtual version of Heaven. These digital versions of Heaven can vary based on how much you pay for the services and your reputation in society. Have a limited income? You might live out your eternity in some less than desirable place, like a casino or a virtual dormitory-like room. If you have unlimited resources though, you could go to Fiji or even the luxurious Lake View, a resort located in a tranquil country estate.
The series follows 27-year-old Nathan Brown (Robbie Amell), a computer programmer...

The movie, set in 1988, opens with three young women driving to a heavy-metal show in their red Jeep Cherokee along a country highway; for a short spell, it feels like a thousand slasher movies made in the kids-in-the-wilderness mode of “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.” Yet there’s something a dash more time specific, less generic, about this trio, even as their potty-mouthed snark points toward the girls-just-want-to-have-what-we-want-to-have vibe of our own era: the leader, Alexis (Alexandra Daddario), with her flashing eyes and reckless ‘tude and inverted crucifix jewelry; Val (Maddie Hasson), a hellion who seems to have styled herself after Madonna by way of Max Max; and Bev (Amy Forsyth), the “nice” quiet one, wayward and a little spooky, who only recently joined up with this drop-dead cool clique.

Freddie Mercury sang that Love Kills, and that’s apparently where Gene Tierney’s coming from in this bizarre domestic noir. Dream wife Tierney is cultured, rich, and drop-dead gorgeous, but hubby Cornell Wilde should have read the small print about her manic possessiveness. Beautiful people, beautiful scenery and Technicolor so bright that even Alfred Newman’s music score seems to be in color; John M. Stahl’s thriller stretches the definition of Film Noir.

Kamasi Washington announced a new concert film, Live at the Apollo Theater, out February 6th via Amazon Prime Video. Michael Garber directed the project, which documents the jazz saxophonist’s headlining February 2019 show at the famed New York venue.

Is this finally Scarlett Johansson‘s year to win an Oscar? Perhaps the answer lies in the eerie parallels to Julianne Moore‘s scenario in 2002.
She’s nominated for Academy Awards in the leading and supporting acting categories. Both are for acclaimed films with multiple nods. She plays a wife. She plays a mother. There’s debate as to which performance is more award-worthy. And she’s likely to lose twice.
Is this Scarlett Johansson this year? Or Julianne Moore in 2002?
There are some eerie parallels between the predicaments of ScarJo and JuMo.
Predict the Oscar winners now; change through February 9
Seventeen years ago, Moore was Golden Globe-nominated for Best Actress in Motion Picture – Drama for her role as a conflicted wife in “Far from Heaven.” She lost to Nicole Kidman in “The Hours,” who played a real person (Virginia Woolf) and was physically transformed onscreen (notably with that prosthetic nose.
