Deicide leader Glen Benton has sounded off on the state of the modern heavy metal scene.
In short, Benton feels that things have simply gotten less metal, citing the hyper sub-categorization of the genre and the onstage attire of those who play it.
Benton’s remarks hail from a new interview with Knac.com. At first, Benton describes his upbringing when he was surrounded by classic metal such as Black Sabbath and Judas Priest — the music that motivated him to the career path he’s been on for decades.
“I remember being at the breakfast table 7:30 in the morning with my boombox blasting ‘Paranoid’ at my mother,” he said (as transcribed by Blabbermouth).
In his opinion, a lot has changed.
“Metal was metal back then,” said Benton. “Metal right now — you have so many subcategories of metal now, it’s ridiculous. I understand individualism and that, and we can...

There’s nothing like the naked body of septuagenarian rock star plugging a definitely-not-real OnlyFans to remind you that today is, in fact, April Fools’ Day.
Well, for that, we say, “Thank you, Robert Fripp.”
In the April 1 spirit, the King Crimson guitarist and founder posted on YouTube, “ Robert has officially joined OnlyFans! Subscribe now for exclusive, jaw-dropping content you never knew you needed…”
To tease the content “you never knew you needed,” Fripp shared a 26-second video himself, sitting butt-ass naked on some steps, with a guitar expertly placed between his legs.

Ozzy Osbourne is done touring, confirmed his wife and manager Sharon Osbourne, who also revealed that the metal legend plans on playing two hometown shows in Birmingham, England, to “say goodbye” to his fans.
Sharon made the declaration during her “Cut the Crap” spoken-word tour stop in London on Sunday night (January 21st). “He won’t tour again but we are planning on doing two more shows to say goodbye as he feels like, ‘I have never said goodbye to my fans and I want to say goodbye properly’,” stated Sharon (as transcribed by Rolling Stone UK).
She went on to say that the two shows would take place his hometown of Birmingham, presumably the soccer stadium Villa Park. “We will do it in Aston Villa where Ozzy is from,” Sharon revealed.
Sharon concluded, “His voice is still absolutely perfect. And all the time he has been off he still...

As far as guitarists are concerned, it doesn’t get much more legendary than Queen’s Brian May and Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi. The two icons come together in a new video as they perform the Sabbath classic “Paranoid.”
The pairing of the Rock & Roll Hall of Famers comes courtesy of the Sky Arts documentary series Greatest Guitar Riffs. The UK television channel premiered the clip via Guitar World, and it shows the guitar masters discussing the first time they met in the early ’70s, with Iommi declaring that they’ve been “best friends ever since.”
When May asks Iommi where all his great riffs come from, the Sabbath legend responds, “I think it’s within. Normally, we’d jam around and play something, and Ozzy [Osbourne] would go, ‘What the fuck’s that?’ But it just feels right.”
From there, the two go into a specific discussion about “Paranoid,...

Mac Sabbath — everyone’s favorite McDonald’s-themed Black Sabbath tribute band — have announced an early 2024 tour of the West Coast, featuring support by the garage-punk act The Darts.
Having recently completed an extensive fall US tour, Mac Sabbath had a little more room in their appetite for a few more shows, hence the name “Save Room for Desert” for the 2024 jaunt. The spelling of “desert” is intentional, as the band will be playing shows in Pioneertown, California, on January 17th; Flagstaff, Arizona, on January 19th; Tucson, Arizona, on January 20th, and Las Vegas on January 21st.
Tickets can be found at venue links via Mac Sabbath’s website, or at StubHub, where your purchase is 100% guaranteed through StubHub’s Fan Protect program.

Zakk Sabbath, the Black Sabbath tribute band fronted by guitarist-singer Zakk Wylde, have announced a new double album, Doomed Forever Forever Doomed.
The double LP arrives March 1st and will see Wylde, bassist Rob “Blasko” Nicholson, and drummer Joey “C” Castillo taking on two seminal ’70s Sabbath albums: 1970’s Paranoid on the first disc (“Doomed Forever”), and 1971’s Master of Reality on the second (“Forever Doomed”). In a recent interview, the English singer opened up about his health conditions, saying that whether he lives or dies he has at least one more show in him.
Speaking to Rolling Stone UK, the Black Sabbath singer said: “It’s really knocked me about. The second surgery went drastically wrong and virtually left me crippled. “I thought I’d be up and running after the second and third, but with the last one, they put a f***** rod in my spine. Madmind Studio has revealed more gameplay footage for their upcoming psychological horror title, Paranoid, which is set to arrive next month. The footage “presents a portion of the city where the main character, Patrick, lives, as well as his desperate attempt to reach the pharmacy to purchase medication that alleviates the symptoms of schizophrenia.”
Paranoid tells the story of Patrick Calman, a 31-year-old man who lost his entire family in mysterious circumstances – his parents died brutally, and his sister suddenly disappeared for unknown reasons. The trauma of losing loved ones shattered Patrick’s psyche and turned his apartment into a prison.
The only member of Patrick’s family left alive is his sister, who disappeared more than 10 years ago. One day, he receives a phone call, and the voice in the receiver seems to belong to his lost sibling. She announces her arrival – several years after her disappearance. The whole...

Tony Iommi made a surprise appearance during the premiere performance of a new Black Sabbath ballet Saturday night (September 23rd) at The Hippodrome Theatre in the band’s hometown of Birmingham, United Kingdom.
The ballet was commissioned by Birmingham Royal Ballet’s director Carlos Acosta and Ballet Now, and features eight re-orchestrated renditions of iconic Black Sabbath songs, as well as new compositions inspired by the heavy metal pioneers.
Iommi had been present for some of rehearsals for the ballet and made his cameo during the final number, playing guitar on “Paranoid.” The guitarist then took a bow with the cast and crew at the conclusion of the performance.
Other notable names in attendance for the premiere were Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler, Sharon Osbourne, Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant, and Electric Light Orchestra drummer Bev Bevan (who served as the touring drummer for Sabbath from 1983 to 1984 and played drums on...

No one could have predicted what it was like sitting in the middle of the Jonas Brothers’ second sold out night at Yankee Stadium. The trio of Nick, Joe and Kevin rose to stardom in the Aughts as Disney’s handsome, Christian answer to Hanson, but not even Disney could prepare for the grip the brothers had on teen culture between 2007 and 2010. They were all excellent songwriters who needed little aid in the studio, plus tabloid-baiting romantic menaces amongst their fellow teen superstar peers, Disney and otherwise.

Rock supergroup Hollywood Vampires — featuring Johnny Depp, Alice Cooper, and Joe Perry — played a UK date on Tuesday night (July 11th) in Birmingham, home of heavy metal legends Black Sabbath.
Since they were in the neighborhood, the Vampires invited none other than legendary Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi onstage for an encore performance of “Paranoid.”
Given the wealth of talent involved, it’s a rousing rendition of the classic song with Cooper commanding lead vocals. Iommi even got a chance to rip through the song’s guitar solo, much to the excitement of the Birmingham crowd.
It’s certainly good to see the Sabbath guitarist back onstage and having a good time. In a recent interview, Iommi said he declined Black Sabbath’s invitation to the Power Trip festival and that his days of extensive touring were over.
However, he did add that he was feeling healthy enough to perform occasionally,...

During the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, attendees became enamored with the 33-foot-tall mechanical bull sculpture that stole the show during the opening ceremonies. Now, thousands have voted to have the bull named after Ozzy Osbourne.
The bull was initially scheduled to be dismantled following the games. But it was such a crowd pleaser, a petition to keep the sculpture intact generated over 10,000 signatures, and now the bull will stand under the atrium of the Birmingham New Street railway station.
After it was announced that the sculpture would live on, a public vote was held to give it a formal name. Over 28,000 votes were cast, with “Ozzy” sweeping over 70 percent of the vote.
It’s a fitting choice considering the singer was raised in the UK city and will forever be linked to the 2022 games after making a rare live appearance alongside Black Sabbath bandmate Tony Iommi to perform “Paranoid” during the closing ceremonies.

“I thought, ‘Well, that’s not going to help me. Nobody talked about it and nobody understood it. I just thought in the end it was a normal thing to be depressed and I started cutting myself to get relief’.

Everything about Jasmine Rose Wilson is a rarity, from her zodiac chart as an Aquarius rising (which astrologically means she’s seen as a unique individual) to the distinctive sound of her voice — low-ranging and contralto — down to the vintage green pants from the Seventies that she’s wearing when we meet. All of these things say that Rose is not disposable. “You going to have to grow with me, baby,” she says cooly.

Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne has been seen for the first time since cancelling his U.K. and Ireland shows, and retiring from touring for good. The ‘Paranoid’ singer, 74, recently had extensive spinal surgery following a fall at his home in 2019, which had further aggravated injuries from a near-fatal quad bike crash in 2003, reports Mirror.co.uk.
The music legend released a statement earlier this week, revealing that he is ‘not physically capable’ of performing. Recently, Ozzy was seen for the first time since cancelling his tour – and he appeared in high spirits as he flashed a peace sign at the cameras which snapped him using a walking stick.
As per Mirror.co.uk, the rocker used the walking aid to help him up some steps as he emerged from a private car. Although he is in ill health, Ozzy appeared to be in good form as he entertained the...

As Soon As a pair of silver vans arrive at the VIP entrance of Birmingham, England’s Alexander Stadium, the whispers start. “Is that Sharon Osbourne?” a squinting security guard asks her friend.
“I think so,” the other guard says. “Does that mean … ?”
The drivers keep security in the dark — literally — by turning off their dome lights as they wait for Prince Edward to finish a speech for the closing ceremonies of the Commonwealth Games, a multisport event similar to the Olympics that took place in early August. The vans creep toward the stage.

Finding Alice is a brilliant new series that begins on ITV this coming Sunday, and while featuring a host of treasured British talent, it was the show’s impressive newcomer we had the pleasure of speaking to, as we sat down to speak to the rising star Isabella Pappas.
We ask Pappas about her experience working with Keeley Hawes, and Nigel Havers, as well as Joanna Lumley, Gemma Jones and Kenneth Cranham (we told you it was treasured). She also comments on the incredible set, and her plans to watch the show, and if she feels a little like this period in her life is the quiet before the storm. She also talks about her childhood and whether acting is something she always wanted to do.
But that’s not to say she’s come completely out of the blue, as Pappas had an Olivier award nomination to her name.
