- Judge Al Bertuccio: [to Barba] You want to be a legislator, too.
- Rafael Barba: Excuse me?
- Judge Al Bertuccio: Correct me if I'm wrong, Mr. Barba, but your job is to bring cases that are actually crimes under the New York Criminal Code.
- Rafael Barba: We presented the facts to the grand jury, who delivered an indictment.
- Judge Al Bertuccio: I once indicted a ham and cheese sandwich for triple homicide.
- Rafael Barba: Well, the defense filed the motion to dismiss.
- Judge Al Bertuccio: You want me to kick a rape case in this political climate without hearing all of the evidence? What's really going on here? You want press? You're laying the bed for a political run?
- Rafael Barba: With all due respect, Judge Bertuccio, you're out of line.
- Judge Al Bertuccio: Oh, be careful, Counselor. Just because you preface something with "all due respect" doesn't mean it's respectable.
- Rafael Barba: I didn't intend to...
- Judge Al Bertuccio: Do not use my courtroom for your own agenda. Do you hear me?
- Rafael Barba: Are you asking me to dismiss the case?
- Judge Al Bertuccio: No, no.
- [chuckles]
- Judge Al Bertuccio: I would never ask a prosecutor to dismiss a case that he believes is worthy of the court's time. That would be an abuse of judicial power.
- [walks away]
- Dominick Carisi, Jr.: [after reading a text message from the victim's phone] So, in ten minutes she goes from "best sex ever" to "you raped me?" How the hell does that happen?
- Olivia Benson: [to Laura] So you didn't know the true identity of this man which means that you never consented to having sex with him.
- Laura Collett: Wait a minute. What... what are you saying? What... what he did was a crime?
- Olivia Benson: I'm saying that what he did to you is rape.
- Odafin Tutuola: Just being real, lying to have sex is just part of the game. I mean, back in the day, I pretended to be Melle Mel's cousin one night. You trying to tell me that was rape?
- Olivia Benson: Things have changed, Fin.
- Odafin Tutuola: Not that much.
- Justin Collett: [to Carisi about his mother taking a drug overdose] Do you think she did that because of our fight, she took all those pills?
- Dominick Carisi, Jr.: No, no, put that out of your head. I think she loves you very much and it's because of that she's gonna make a full recovery.
- Olivia Benson: [to Erin Dowling] I am so sorry, but I want you to know that we intend to prosecute this man for what he's done, and we hope that we can count on you to cooperate.
- Erin Dowling: Are you joking? You want me to tell the world that I was willing to sleep with the admissions director to get my daughter into college?
- Olivia Benson: You didn't consent to having sex with Tom Metcalf. He defrauded you.
- Erin Dowling: We were two adults playing a game and the hustler got hustled. Lesson learned.
- Judge Al Bertuccio: You wish to present a closing argument, Miss Staines?
- Nikki Staines: Yes, Your Honor. Ladies and gentlemen, my client isn't perfect. Truth is, he's not even decent. If he tried to date me, I would laugh at him or I'd punch him in the face.
- Tom Metcalfe: What am I even doing here? I've done nothing wrong. Since when is having sex a crime?
- Olivia Benson: What you did isn't sex. Trust me.
- Tom Metcalfe: If you arrested every guy who ever lied to get women, you'd have 50 million men in prison.
- Rafael Barba: We're not here to debate the ethics of your behavior, but we are willing to discuss a deal. If you are willing to plead guilty to sexual assault in the third degree...
- Tom Metcalfe: Sexual assault? You kidding me? These chicks were begging for it. If anything, they assaulted me.
- Rafael Barba: Yes or no?
- Tom Metcalfe: Kiss my ass.
- Olivia Benson: [places Tom under arrest] Mr. Metcalf, you are under arrest. You have the right to remain silent.
- Judge Al Bertuccio: A compelling closing, Miss Staines.
- Nikki Staines: Thank you.
- Judge Al Bertuccio: And I'm sure the jury found it persuasive as well. How about you, Mr. Barba? What was your take? Did you find it illuminating, per chance?
- Rafael Barba: Your Honor, I stand by the evidence.
- Judge Al Bertuccio: I don't care about the evidence. I care about the law, or the lack thereof. You're a talented prosecutor with a bright future, and if I were you, I would take Miss Staines out for a cup of that gourmet coffee everyone drinks nowadays and beg her to accept the plea to a lesser charge, which I'm sure she'll accept, because she's a reasonable woman and knows that her client is a repulsive human being. Judges and prosecutors are supposed to enforce the laws that exist, not the ones they think should exist and when they lose sight of that, they run the risk of getting their pants pulled down in public and having their sterling reputations sullied.
- Rafael Barba: It sounds like Rape by Fraud. The problem is that doesn't exist in New York criminal code
- Dominick Carisi, Jr.: [Very early in the investigation] And here's a screen shot of her phone. Just another perfect family
- Amanda Rollins: Wow, it's just too early to be that jaded
- Dominick Carisi, Jr.: Next time I'll wait till noon
- Dominick Carisi, Jr.: Hey, Justin. How's your mom?
- Justin Collett: She's still unconscious, but the doctor sounds optimistic.
- Dominick Carisi, Jr.: Good.
- Justin Collett: Not sure if he really means it, or he's just trying to placate me.
- Dominick Carisi, Jr.: Placate, huh? Nice. SAT word, right?
- [laughs softly]
