Star War Rebels - S03E03 The Antilles Extraction

What Star Wars Rebels does so well that makes me keep watching and love this show, is their ability to build the Star Wars world. I mentioned it last week how they did a great job on expanding the Star Wars Universe and I thought they did the same again this week.

I think that this could have easily been a low episode for the season. Each season there's a few episodes that are catering to the younger audience and for the most part doesn't play all that much into the overall story. They are basically pointless. This wasn't one of those episodes. While I was a back step as far as the overall season plot line, what it did was expand on the Star Wars Universe massively. This episode gave an origin story to one of the most famous B characters in the Star Wars Universe. Wedge is a character that we saw though all 3 original movies and we just saw him as a good pilot for the Rebellion, with no major information on how he got there. This episode did this. Every time we watch the original trilogy and maybe even Rogue One, we are going to have a different outlook of who Wedge is. To now know that he defected from the Empire and was extracted by our favourite group of rebels.

What this show is doing is starting to insert our rebels into Star Wars history. They are starting to play a role in the Rebellion where we are going to see the results of their actions in the films and I love that.

Overall it was a great contained episode. It's big highlight was how well it builds an origin of Wedge, but for me not much else really stood out. We got introduced to a new Empire pilot that I'm sure we will see more of, and we have a new mystery character to guess who is helping out our Rebels.

The Antilles Extraction

After I heard that Denis Lawson wasn't going to appear in the sequel trilogy, I thought it was a missed opportunity for more Wedge Antilles. But with him now being introduced to this family, I am happy that we at least got a little bit more of the famous rebel pilot. This episode explores his origin, and while it is mostly an episode that doesn't further the overall story that much, I do think it was a fun, enjoyable time. I think some of the episode's actions were a little sloppy, but I also thought that this episode set up some pretty interesting antagonists for the rest of the series, including a little more development for Governor Pryce, who has been teased ever since the first season. It is kinda cool that Wedge defected from the Empire, and it gives him a lot more baggage when we see the attack on the Death Star in the original trilogy. I didn't think I was going to like this episode that much, but I ended up truly enjoying it for what it was, and I do hope that Wedge sticks around and joins the crew on a few of their missions, because I think he's one of those characters that wouldn't hurt from a little character development.

Welcome, Wedge

Warning: Spoilers
Plot; Sabine goes undercover as a TIE pilot trainee in an effort to extract a group of defectors.

Another tight, focused episode sees the spotlight shift away from the Force and back onto the Rebellion. In this case we get a look at something hinted at, if at all, in the movies and revealed mostly in various character guides and backstories, and that's the fact that the Rebel Alliance is made up in no small part of former Imperials who became disenchanted with the Empire. Here we're introduced to two cadets whose names will certainly be familiar to fans of the OT; Wedge and Hobbie. It's fun to see these background characters fleshed out a bit, and I hope they show up again in future episodes.

As usual, the visuals are great, with the environments and dogfighting scenes faring particularly well. There's also a callback to one of the stronger episodes from S2, with Agent Kallus repaying a debt (and perhaps revealing a growing sympathy for the Rebel cause).

A Wedge of Luck

I love how this introduces Wedge Antilles, pilot from the original trilogy, and shows us his origins.

This is a fun episode and builds on the brilliant Agent Kallus character a little as well as showing us more of how the rebellion is building.

My rating: 8.5/10.

WEDGE

A surprisingly good episode.

I actually do love Wedge. He's fun on the original trilogy, but I loved his inclusion in the Star Wars Legends books quite a bit, so I'm glad to see more of him on screen as well. I was also glad to see Sabine get the spotlight for a bit. I'm still lurching for some legit character growth from her, but she was still very fun nonetheless.

I'd honestly love to see some more episodes that have to do with the flying. This and the B-Wing episode with Hera are so good.

Good episode.

The Antilles Extraction

Warning: Spoilers
I have to give credit where credit is due, and the animated rendering of Wedge was Fantastic. I am not so sure about Hobbie though. It is good to see how they actually joined the rebellion. Too bad Biggs wasn't there as well.

The story of this one wasn't so great as the other episodes. Don't get me wrong I like the series, just not one of my favourite episodes.

I am certainly not liking the whiny little cuss that Ezra is turning in to as he slips further and further toward the dark-side. Word on the internet is that Ezra could be a surprise character in a part of Star Wars Episode 8. I am kinda leery about believing every rumour I read on the web, but wouldn't it be cool for Ezra to show up? Of course he would be 40 to 50 years older akin to the age of obi-wan in ANH.
