Nico Mastorakis on 'Island of Death' (2015)
*** 1/2 (out of 4)
Fun and energetic interview with director Nico Mastorakis who opens up about his controversial 1976 film ISLAND OF DEATH. Mastorakis briefly mentions an earlier movie that he did but after this it's right to everything dealing with ISLAND OF DEATH. We learn about the locations that the movie was shot, why he wanted to make the picture and what his thoughts are on its cult following. It's a little shocking to hear Mastorakis admit that he doesn't care for the film and he questions why anyone would want to watch it. The interview is extremely good but I must admit that I thought the director was telling two different stories because on one hand he says the film isn't gory but a few minutes later he'll admit that the violence and gore is disturbing. He also talks about the alternate titles, censorship and his thoughts on people who thinks he's embarrassed by the film. If you're a fan of the movie then you'll certainly enjoy this featurette since there's no much information given but it seems like the director doesn't know what to make of the film's cult following.
