Some times i think Charles is too much of a dork and push over. But in this episode we got t ok see a whole new side of him. By the way, it's a comedy somethings are going to be made up. So Latvia's don't take it personally

THE DRUNK SINGS!
kxprailer26 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I'm writing this review because currently there are only 2 other reviews of this episode. Both are the obligatory 1 star review BOTH talking briefly about the Latvians. We need an ACTUAL review of the ACTUAL episode.

This is definitely the weakest B99 christmas episode. It's certainly not a bad episode. But compared to the rest of this season so far and the Christmas episodes of the past. This one ultimately fails to be memorable.

The cold open is the funniest part of the entire episode. The inflatable Christmas tree. I laugh out loud every time I see this intro, and it's a shame it's followed up with such a decent to mediocre episode.

The entire A story in this episode. Boyle desperately trying to find the Captain Latvia action figure for his son is what makes the episode work. Andy Samberg and Joe Lo Truglio have such great chemistry together and it's always a joy to watch them work cases together.

All of what Boyle does in this episode is great, and some of it is pretty damn funny. Whether he's using his musk while dancing, or scooching his pants off. The captain Latvia story was great, and it had a really sweet ending.

Now let's talk about the B story. I generally don't like singing episodes, because most of the time they ruin the show's tone or are so cheesy and hallmark-esque it becomes sickening. But i really wish this B story didn't go as it actually does.

For the most part, the singing isn't too bad, the rivalry with the MTA led to some solid zingers from Holt. This episode would've been better if Gina actually stayed in the action. Since if she did. We wouldn't have to endure another show ruining performance from Lance Barber. An actor who in my experience has ruined more than one episode of TV. Most notably an entire episode of TBBT. Him being a singing drunk could've worked. But as soon as he sabotages the singing competition, he tanks the entire B story along with it.

The worst Christmas B99 episode by default, and honestly. Thinking back, this must've been a hugely disappointing winter finale for S4 when it originally aired.

It was just a bad episode. I just liked first opening scene with Christmas Tree, that's all, everything else were boring.

I think many Latvians would say this...

Seeing these two "serious" Latvian comments, I decided to write my first review on this website - okey, I can admit that this wasn't one of the best episodes of all four seasons, but for me as a Latvian it didn't care how bad it was, this series alone was special to me that my small country was mentioned in such a popular show and I didn't really care what names people had and what toys were used, some people in my country just take life too hard. ;D

Boring filler episode

One you'll watch only once, as it's safe to miss if you ever rewatch the show. Nil of note happens.

Worst Christmas episode, although not awful
AnnerHant23 April 2022
I'm quite surprised by the two super serious negative reviews of this episode. It sure was the least interesting and memorable Christmas episode we've had so far, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

I liked the main story of Boyle in search of Captain Latvia. I have to say that knowing practically nothing about Latvian culture, none of the details about the country really made me lose interest of the episode itself. Although the story was not the most thrilling, and some parts were long and non-interesting, I liked seeing Charles getting involved in the case to make Nikolaj happy for his first Christmas. The jokes weren't the funniest, but it was a nice addition, as some really worked well.

The B-plot story with the singing competition wasn't the most gripping story either, but a few jokes were still worth it. It wasn't particularly good, but it was enjoyable overall.

All in all, I'd say this is the worst Christmas episode we've had so far. However, Charles going "Full Boyle" for his son's hapiness, and Jake's and Boyle's chemistry always work for me. Not desatrous, I guess i'd be willing to watch it on occasions.

Warning: Spoilers
You are so wrong about Latvia. There is no Captain Latvia, oposums do not live in Latvia, there is no such thing as Riga hammer, we do not have mafia. And why all the names that is mentioned as latvian is russan? If latvian joke about estonians, we joke about they slowness. Use the google, it is not so hard to prepare better. One star for talking in latvian- 80% was understanable..

The Latvian references are horrid and not Latvian
ievadubovapiano4 April 2021
First of all I like the show and normally I don't mind having a laugh at my national expense. But there isn't one detail in Brooklyn 99 that has any connection to Latvia. Starting from the son - Nikolaj (Never Heard this to be a name in Latvia there is a Russian name like this however ) every other ' Latvians persons name was Russian. To make this clear person names are very different to Slavic countries in Latvia. Our traditional Christmas cookies are gingerbread and never seen a possum there. None of the so called Latvian language sounded Latvian at least not a word was understood. Of course there are also no Latvian superhero as captain Latvia ! Little research would have made a lot funnier plot with the superhero from folk tale - Lacplesis (man who can tear bears apart ) . Just saying basic research.
