The Iron Man
A_Kind_Of_CineMagic19 October 2020
Perhaps deliberately referencing the story 'The Iron Man' which was turned into a great animated movie The Iron Giant. This, like that story, features a damaged robotic man who acts amiably but has a fearsome battle mode. In this case an Imperial droid sent to find the rebel base which gets damaged and loses its memory temporarily.

Most of the story is a lightweight filler played for just a bit of fun but in the end there is a nice serious bit involving Kallus and Thrawn which adds to the overall story.

My rating: 7/10.

Entertaining Enough Filler

Warning: Spoilers
The Ghost crew leaves Chopper Base in the hands of Zeb, aided by Chopper.

Wanting something other to do than take inventory with AP-5, Zeb and Chopper go investigate a possible meteor impact and find a mystery droid that is deceptively harmless. But soon the three finds themselves in a battle that may get blown out of proportion.

At this point in the season, already halfway in, as a viewer I expect more, yet we are given another filler episode, with a quick Thrawn tag at the end. The important events of the season can basically be boiled down to an an hour or so. The rest is entertaining enough, but there's barely anything built around it. The show has to build up to the events of not only A New Hope but also Rogue One, and now deal with Thrawn, and it's seems to barely move. And when it does move, at times it feels like we've already covered it in a previous episode.

And what is the big deal about Thrawn? So far his impressive abilities have been mediocre or higher critical thinking skills, and everybody seems to be in awe of what mostly seems like common sense ideas, such as -- in this episode -- narrowing down the search to a smaller group of planets.

It's fun enough and have some good exchanges between Zeb and AP-5, but don't expect much from it.

Star Filler

Warning: Spoilers
Plot; Zeb is left in charge of the base and must enlist the help of Chopper and AP-5 to stop an Imperial droid programmed to hunt and kill Rebels.

This is your basic filler episode where the story at large screeches to a halt and a one and done, ultimately inconsequential tale (well, mostly), takes place. Here we get a Zeb focused story, and paired with the plucky Chopper and droll AP-5, the tone is on the lighter side. I don't mind the latter, as you've gotta lighten up every now and then, but you can do that and still move the narrative ball down the field a bit more than they do here.

An early Ralph McQuarrie C3P0 drawing

Those isn't so much a review as immediately realizing the robot at the beginning of the episode looked a lot like one of Ralph McQuarrie's initial drawings of C3P0.

Warhead

It feels like they need to step their game up a little bit. It had now been many episodes since we last got something that was relevant to the plot. The last two-part episode was a fun little tie-in to "Rogue One," but it didn't add anything, except for the fact that Saw Gerrera might show up again. This episode also mostly unnecessary, with about two minutes of relevant stuff. The final scene of the episode was great, and it gave Thrawn a little more screen time, something that he has been seriously lacking as of late. I also found the action in the episode quite good, but the overall premise of stretching this subplot idea into an entire episode wasn't something I felt like I wanted. I think that the next episode might get a little back to the basics, but overall, I do think that this season has too much going on for it. It doesn't have an overarching narrative like the last two seasons, but more like a lot of different character arcs that are being thrown together to craft this season. It can be enjoyable, but when we get episodes like this in the middle of it all, I do start to question the quality of the overall thing.

Five Nights at Chopper Base

What a creepy-looking droid. Imagine being killed by a droid... what a garbage way to go.

This was a decently enjoyable filler. It was very funny. I think the comedy made up for a fairly straight-forward story with a pretty predictable ending. It'll be interesting to see the outcome of these events, so not a total waste of time.
