Women’s History Month may be over, but that doesn’t mean that women aren’t leading many of Hulu’s top picks for April. This next chapter in the Vanderpump saga is sure to be full of drama, decadence, and debauchery as the staff caters to Vanderpump, her wealthy guests, and their own desires.
Hulu Original Under the Bridge, based on the 1997 true-crime novel of the same name, also premieres this month. This limited series follows the investigation of Reena Virk’s disappearance –the fourteen-year-old left to meet some friends and never returned home. Starring Riley Keough and Academy Award nominee Lily Gladstone, Under the Bridge has all the makings of a true-crime hit. Rounding out this month,...

Though the confusingly named initiative “FX on Hulu” is on its way out, FX is still bringing premium television to Hulu in the meantime.
Hulu’s list of new releases for April 2022 is highlighted by FX limited series Under the Banner of Heaven. This adaptation of the non-fiction book by John Krakauer stars Andrew Garfield as a Mormon police detective whose faith is shaken when investigating a murder involving the church.
It’s not all just FX on the TV side of things for Hulu this month, however. The streamer is debuting second seasons of its series The Hardy Boys (April 6) and Woke (April 8). There isn’t much to report from Hulu’s original movies arm aside from true crime documentary Captive Audience on April 21. But that doc about one family’s 50-year journey for justice sounds like a must-watch.

UK pay-tv broadcaster Sky is to launch 30 new Sky Original films this year and will increase this to one a week from 2022 in a bid to become “the best home cinema service in the world”.
It represents a major push into film for the UK pay-tv operator, taking on streaming giants Netflix and Amazon as well as Disney, whose channels were removed from Sky last October following the launch of Disney+.
The plan to launch one original film per week from next year echoes a similar commitment made by Netflix earlier this month.

Exclusive: One of the most obvious but routinely encountered hazards for a growing distributor is over-reach: buying or marketing beyond your means. So far, that’s a pitfall UK outfit Altitude Films has avoided with aplomb.
Set up by former Optimum Releasing founder Will Clarke in 2012, the carefully managed integrated firm, comprising distribution, sales and production, is coming off its biggest year to date, despite the challenging UK landscape. Four movies crossed $1M for the distribution arm in 2017: Moonlight (which took a company record $6M), Loving Vincent ($1.4M), The Florida Project ($1.3M) and Lady Macbeth (1.1M). Six of the company’s top ten movies have been released in the last 12 months.
Much of the growing distribution slate is made up of rising UK talent (Michael Pearce’s Toronto drama Beast is released in around 70 screens this weekend), festival favorites and commercially-minded documentaries...

#MeToo, Trump… Jason Isaacs is furious – and his own movies are the last thing on his mind
Traditionally, journalists and actors are supposed to spend the first half, at least, of their allotted time together in some airless hotel room politely discussing The Work – by which I mean the star’s latest project, whether magnificent or corny. But tradition can go hang. Thanks to Harvey Weinstein and all that has followed in the months since his disgrace, such encounters have a strange new energy, a directness that makes short shrift of such matters as awards season and the ordeal of the red carpet. Journalists want to know if the atmosphere in meetings and on set has changed and, if so, whether such a shift is likely to be permanent; their interviewees accept that, for whatever reason, such questions cannot be ducked. For the time being, then, a certain amount of...

All parents and caretakers of young children are aware of the existence of fast food films. Those cheap and cheerfully animated features which fill a child’s brain with unchallenging words and colours for their modest runtimes and their escorts’ minds with white noise. With little in the way of merchandise to pick grownup pockets they serve as a secret fallback of family life during school holidays and long weekends when too much time has passed between Disney releases. Like those direct to DVD sequels which mimic, beat for beat, a popular movie (while remaining steadfastly inferior) junior fast food films fill a hole without ever passing for the real thing.
Monster Family seems to aspire to change that. While aesthetically it is, unquestionably, cheap and cheerful, its extraordinary voice cast are not. Emily Watson, Catherine Tate, Nick Frost, Celia Imrie and Jason Isaacs all signed on...

Family animation is set to bow in 137 sites this weekend.
Sky’s first move into day-and-date ’Original Films’ in UK cinemas will kick off this weekend with family animation Monster Family, set to open in 137 sites this Friday (March 2).
The release will be made available to Sky’s TV customers on the same day as the planned theatrical roll-out via the paid-for subscription package Sky Cinema.
The number of sites programming the film is a record for a day-and-date release in the UK, surpassing the previous benchmark of 120 which was set by 45 Years when it went onto Curzon’s home cinema platform at the same time as its theatrical run.
However, the UK’s three largest multiplex chains, Vue, Odeon and Cineworld - which between them operate around 64% of UK cinema screens - are not programming Monster Family as they continue to adhere to traditional theatrical windows.
Typically, a distributor will have to wait 16-17 weeks to make a...

The English voice cast is stellar: Emily Watson, Jason Isaacs, Nick Frost, Jessica Brown Findlay, Celia Imrie and Catherine Tate. Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out….but mostly movies.
This Past Weekend:
It was absolutely no surprise that Hugh Jackman’s last Wolverine movie Logan would top the box office, but it actually ended up doing even better than my prediction when actual numbers came in, grossing $88.3 million over the weekend. That makes it the fourth highest X-Movie opening (including Deadpool) but also the biggest R-rated opening for March, defeating 300’s once-impressive $70 million opening. It’s also the fourth highest R-rated opening of all time after Deadpool, The Matrix Reloaded and American Sniper.
The bigger surprise was how well Jordan Peele’s thriller Get Out held up in its second weekend, not only because it was going up against Logan, but also because high-profile horror films tend...
