Korean filmmakers have produced some of today’s most cutting-edge movies by borrowing the best elements from Hollywood, Chinese, and Japanese cinema, and mixing them their own unique cultural vision. So when it comes to the action genre, K-films are all over the map. K-actioners range from irreverent comedies to gritty brutal ultraviolence. Story arcs move from funny to savage in the blink of an eye.
Always well-crafted, Korean action films are filled with clever plot twists, refreshing characters that are fully fleshed out, and superb cinematography, However, Korean cinema tends to defy being as easily pigeonholed into genre boxes as Western contemporaries.
For example, Park Chan-wook’s disturbing Cannes winner, Oldboy, is more of psychological thriller than an action film, and yet the brilliant one-er hallway hammer fight is consistently referenced as one of the top examples of fight choreography from that year. Snowpiercer, which spawned a TNT series,...

Best known for his ultraviolence and splatter prison cult classic “Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky” and his portraying of the cocky Northern martial artist who challenged the Wing Chun master in “Ip Man” and after appearing in other kung fu movies, Louis Fan Siu Wong pretty much disappeared from the overall Hong Kong action scene. Nonetheless, he has been busy making online movies in China ever since, thanks to the advances of smartphones and 5G technology and like a cultural revolution, the online movie business phenomenon is flourishing in China like there is no tomorrow. These are usually short and disposable productions being watched by anyone on the phone or tablets and anywhere where the internet is within reach.
In his latest outing, Fan plays the leader of a squad of professional bodyguards Lung Wei assigned to protect a foreign businessman. As expected, they came under attack in which none of his members survived.

The traditional action blockbuster of the 90s and 00s was usually a film where the story was there to provide a rather thin basis for the constant action, to the point that you could fast forward the scenes when there was none. As time passed, and Korean cinema presented the likes of “I Saw the Devil” and “The Chaser”, thriller, drama, social commentary elementss also became part of the particular category, reinvigorating and elevating it to another level. As political correctness became more and more prevalent, these extra elements started to become more intense, occasionally even taking over the action/violence elements. “Carter” on the other hand, by the director of “The Villainess” seems like a throw-back to the action blockbusters of the past, focusing almost exclusively on the rather impressive action, while being ultra violent. Unfortunately, most of the issues from his previous film are also here.

Let’s be honest: 2021 was one of the worst years Korean cinema had in recent times. One would’ve hoped that they would have built upon the brilliant couple years that 2019 ad 2020 were but sadly that wasn’t to be. The pandemic situation did not help, with many production houses deciding to pull scheduled releases, halting production or waiting on things to calm down before releasing some projects that have big money riding on them. Even on the indie cinema front, which actually thrived in 2021 due to the lack of mainstream releases, did not manage to impress with what little out there was.
Things however do seem to be on the up with this year, as a few postponed releases are finally getting rescheduled and seeing theatrical releases. New releases are also being talked about and promotional material for some long gestating projects is also being circulated. Without further ado,...

If you’re at all familiar with Korean revenge stories then you’ll know one thing is 99 out of 100 times an absolute certainty: that it will not end well for anyone involved. In the worlds of “The Vengeance Trilogy”, “I Am The Devil”, “A Bittersweet Life”, “The Villainess”, revenge is a merciless loop that always finds a way to complete its circuit, more often than not leaving a trail of death and broken souls in the process. This is what makes Korean revenge so endlessly interesting, watching filmmakers twist and play with the concept in ever-deeper, ever-visceral ways. With “Pieta”, Kim Ki-duk definitely takes influence from Park Chan-wook’s now-iconic bloody three-film revenge extravaganza, but also makes it his own by channeling the cross between disturbing and poetic that became somewhat of an expertise of his. His 18th film, “Pieta” was the first Korean film to take home the coveted...

Netflix says its spending in Korea will top $500M in 2021 as the streamer doubles down on local content production after hits including #Alive.
During an event today to tout its upcoming slate, Minyoung Kim, VP of Content for Korea, Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand, revealed that the service passed 3.8 million paid memberships in Korea as of the end of 2020. It has north of 200 million subs globally.
During the showcase, two new Korean original films were revealed:
Moral Sense, from Park Hyun-jin, who previously helmed the 2016 rom-com Like For Likes. His new movie follows a seemingly clean cut office worker who keeps his Bdsm taste to himself, until his female co-worker accidentally opens his mail and finds a leash.
Carter is being directed by Jung Byung-gil (The Villainess). The one-scene, one-cut action pic will follow a man after he wakes up in a motel room with no recollection of who he is,...

Exclusive: South Korean filmmaker Byung-gil Jung, who wowed audiences at Cannes 2017 with his femme-led action feature The Villainess, has come aboard to direct the action thriller Havoc, written by Eric Tipton, based on an original idea by Steve Barnett and Daniel Myrick.
Inspired by actual events, Havoc tells the story of a U.S. helicopter crashing on the North Korean side of the Dmz. With tensions between the North and South already on the verge of war, the surviving U.S. Army Reservists must work together to protect a civilian tech-specialist and find their way across the Dmz, without the possibility of U.S. military support. Both Jung and Kim served in the South Korean military, performing several missions with U.S. soldiers, and plan to bring their experiences to Havoc.
Producers include Bernie Goldmann, Monarch principals Barnett and Alan Powell, and Lewis Kim. Monarch principal Vicky L. Patel will executive produce.

James Gunn is always up for sharing his opinions (for better or for worse) as well as interacting with fans on Twitter. Just the other day, in fact, he shared a list of 27 sequels better than the original and before that, he recommended 10 movies to watch during quarantine. But now, The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy director has revealed a new list of films to watch during self-isolation and has come up with 54 action movies that he believes are an A+.
Studios have been releasing some of their new efforts on digital early like Bloodshot and The Hunt in an attempt to capitalize on any extra revenue they can in these difficult times. But forget about new movies for a second. Gunn’s list below begins a proper action film education and all of his suggestions are well worth checking out.

South Korea celebrated the centennial of the country’s cinema in style. “Parasite” became the first film to win the coveted Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival as well as the first film to be nominated for and win a Golden Globe award after being nominated for both Best Director and Best Foreign Language Film, eventually being awarded the Best Foreign Language Film of the year. Commercially as well, Korean films enjoyed a successful year, with both “Extreme Job” and “Exit” benefiting from a strong word of mouth to secure their places among the highest grossing Korean films of all time at the domestic box office. Simultaneously, independent cinema also flourished last year, with several smaller films winning big at various international film festivals around the globe, sending hopeful signs for the country’s independent cinema.
Naturally, expectations are high from what Korean cinema has to offer this year.

The trend of action films focused on female leads in South Korea continues, with director Lim Kyung-taek’s new film “No Mercy”. While “The Villainess”, for example, mashed up action with some good old-fashioned Korean melodrama and “The Witch: Part 1. The Subversion.” tells a bloody, brutal female “superhero” tale, “No Mercy” has a more straight forward “Taken” tale of abduction and revenge.

“The Villainess” screened at Fantasia International Film Festival
The movie starts with an extremely impressive action scene, where we watch an unknown assailant attacking swarms of enemies in a building, butchering, maiming, breaking, kicking and punching everyone who enters the scene, in a style identical to the first-person shooters in video games. After a while, the camera is pushed back and the character is revealed to be a woman, while the video game aesthetics remain, as a third-person action this time. After the ending of this scene, and a disorienting cut including a flashback, we watch the main heroine escaping a room she was secluded in, and some seemingly surrealist scenes occur,...

You have to respect the likes of High Octane Pictures and Wild Eye Releasing, the amount of truly independent genre films they put out in the Us is astounding. Of course many filmmakers can go down the self-releasing route and debut their films on streaming services etc. but there’s nothing like getting a physical release – and that’s where High Octane and co. come in, seemingly picking up titles no one else will and there’s some real gems hidden in their output, as long as you can look past the low budgets!
But when you’re dealing with so many independent films and so many low budget films there’s bound to be some stinkers; and unfortunately Impossible Mission is one such movie.

Jung Byung-gil’s latest movie wears its influences on its sleeve but still manages to find it’s own beats in this High-Octane action thriller from South Korea.
“The Villainess” screened at San Diego Asian Film Festival
After taking revenge on the men who murdered her father, Sook-hee (Kim Ok-vin) is captured and initiated into the National Intelligence Service. Given a new identity and trained to become an assassin, she is given the chance of a new life for herself and her young daughter. As one mission progresses, she starts to learn the truth behind the murder of her father and that the past she thought was long buried is about to erupt with tragic consequences.
They say all artists steal and Jung Byung-gil is no exception here as his movie references several renowned action movies from recent history. The opening sequence brings back memories of “Old Boy” in its downtrodden corridors.
