Saradha UScreengrab/ YouTube- Vijay TVSuddenly, Sundari disappeared. Her mother, grandmother, husband, his friend, her friend, all have Covid-19 and are admitted to a hospital. Her uncle is searching for her everywhere for Sundari, with new characters we have never seen before helping him. And then, the uncle ‘changes’ — it’s a new actor playing him, and the serial pretty much has no characters we’ve seen before. The second wave of Covid-19 in Tamil Nadu saw the showrunners and writers of Sundari on Sun TV get “creative” and wrap themselves up in knots to keep the show going, as the pandemic hit them in more ways than one. And one fine day, they decided they couldn’t do it any longer, and started re-telecasting old episodes of the show.

CinemaThese stars have succeeded in expanding their appeal and are getting new audiences for their industry. Sowmya RajendranWith multiplexes playing films with subtitles and online streaming platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hotstar acquiring new films across Indian languages, the boundaries of stardom have been stretched further than ever before. While the southern superstars of the previous generations too enjoyed a fanbase outside their respective industries, the out of state audiences mostly got to know them through dubbed films which did not release with the same fanfare as a new film. Now, however, not only do we have simultaneous releases in multiple languages, the increase in accessibility means that people who like a star’s work are keen to watch films made in a language that’s not their own. This is especially applicable to male stars because they usually focus on increasing their stature in one industry rather than...

KollywoodAnother primary recommendation is for big stars to be held accountable for box-office failures.Anjana ShekarTamil Nadu’s west zone theatre owners believe that big stars in Tamil cinema should be held accountable if their film fails at the box office. This was among the three main recommendations discussed in a meeting held by Tamil Nadu’s west zone theatre owners, comprising Coimbatore, Erode, Tiruppur and Melagiri on Tuesday. “A major portion of the production costs goes towards the salaries today and producers struggle when the film fails at the box office. It is only fair for the big stars to contribute in some way to ease the pressure on the producers and distributors,” says Tiruppur Subramaniam, president of the Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Association. The recommendations will be taken up with the Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners’ Association meeting, which will be held in January next year. “I am not...

KollywoodThe film is going to be her second release of the year.Digital NativeNayanthara, whose films Aramm, Dora, and Velaikkaran were well received last year, is gearing up for the release of upcoming Tamil thriller Kolamavu Kokila a.k.a Co Co. Directed by debutant Nelson Dilip Kumar, the film is going to be her second release of the year. In the film, she plays a simple girl who, when pushed into an unexpected situation, has to fight for her own for survival. On Thursday, the makers via announced a poster that the film will hit the screens on August 10 worldwide. This means that Nayanthara and Kamal Haasan, whose Vishwaroopam 2 is also confirmed to release on the same date, will lock horns at the box-office. The film is rumoured to be inspired from the popular American show Breaking Bad. Apparently, Kolamavu is the colloquial word used in the film for cocaine. It’s also evident from the title poster of the film that the story does deal about drugs. Clarifying these reports, Nelson said in an interview to Hindustan Times that his film is his own work of fiction. “It’s a story about an ordinary girl in the most unexpected situation and how she fights her way out of it. We can’t make anything close to Breaking Bad because it’s really wild and we’re not prepared for such things.” The film also stars Saranya Ponvannan and Yogi Babu in important roles. The film has music by Anirudh Ravichander and recently there were reports that the young composer has played a cameo in the film. However, director Nelson subsequently quashed these reports in a few interviews. He went on to add that Anirudh’s music is the soul of the film. “As soon as Anirudh heard the story, he was excited to commence work. He’s taken very special care and worked on the film because he really liked the story,” he said. (Content provided by Digital Native)...

KollywoodSivakarthikeyan was interacting with college students when he said that his films will stay clear of such scenes in future.Digital NativeDigital NativeActor Sivakarthikeyan, in a recent interaction with college students, has revealed that his future films won’t have any bar songs or stalking scenes. In 2016, soon after the release of his Remo, in which he played a man disguised as a woman nurse, Siva came under the scanner for glorifying stalking through his role. He pursues Keerthy Suresh in the film non-stop, despite the fact that she makes it very clear that she’s not interested in him quite early on. When asked about the same during his interaction with college students recently, he said all his future films will refrain from having such scenes. According to a Deccan Chronicle report, Siva said: “Filmmaking is a process. I conveyed a vital message in my previous film Velaikkaran. Still, you people talk about Remo. I think you will not be asking this question after five years. But now, my directors themselves avoid such situations and songs. Not only in Seemaraja, you won’t see such scenes in any of my future movies. It’s the evolution of my career." Last seen on screen in Velaikkaran as a blue-collared worker in a fight against food adulteration, Sivakarthikeyan is currently shooting the comedy film Seemaraja, which marks his third time collaboration with director Ponram. The film also stars Samantha Akkineni and Simran in important roles. After completing Seemaraja for director Ponram, Siva has a science-fiction film with Ravi Kumar. This untitled project will have music by A.R Rahman. Rakul Preet Singh is the female lead, and it is slated to go on the floors from this summer. Simultaneously, Siva will be doing a movie helmed by Okok fame M Rajesh. To be produced by Gnanavel Raja’s Studio Green, the film is said to be a romantic comedy entertainer . KollywoodMohan Raja's latest 'Velaikkaran' stars Sivakarthikeyan, Nayanthara and Fahadh Fasil. Digital Native nayan-Aramm.jpgAfter impressing critics and audiences alike with Thani Oruvan, director Mohan Raja has returned with Velaikkaran, which hit the screens on Friday. The film stars Sivakarthikeyan in the titular role along with Fahadh Faasil and Nayanthara. It marks the first collaboration between Siva and Raja, who has teamed up with Nayanthara for the second time. On working with the Maya actor, Raja said in a group interaction on Thursday: “She’s a boon to Tamil cinema and a thorough professional. It’s an honour to work with her again.” This is also the first time Siva has teamed up with Nayanthara, who has had a terrific year with films such as Dora and Aramm to her credit. A message-heavy drama, Velaikkaran is centered around the lives of blue-collar workers. Raja revealed that the film addresses questions and issues that have been bothering him for over a decade. “I don't believe in directing a film for the sake of money. The film reflects several questions that have been troubling me over 20 years and I took time to qualify myself to work on it. In a way, Velaikkaran also echoes questions what people want to ask. It will address the problems faced by the working class and deal with capitalism. Had I said this in my debut or second film, audiences wouldn’t have accepted. Thani Oruvan gave me an identity,” he said. In the film, Sivakarthikeyan plays a labourer in a factory that produces a food-based product. Apparently, Siva will be seen crusading a fight against food adulteration. He gets double-crossed by his best friend, rumoured to be played by Fahadh Faasil, who is making his Tamil debut with the film. Velaikkaran also stars Sneha and Prakash Raj in crucial roles. The first poster of the film was released not long ago. Amid speculations that the poster was a blatant copy of the Michael Douglas starrer Falling Down, the film earned enough attention when its teaser and the first song were released. Anirudh Ravichander has composed the music for the film. After the runaway success of Remo for Siva and the critical and commercial acclaim for Mohan’s Thani Oruvan, it remains to be seen if Velaikkaran can continue the winning streak for both Siva and Mohan.
