Unfortunately, the tanking of Amblin/Universal’s $45M-costing The Last Voyage of the Demeter stands out like a wart, since we haven’t had many misfires this summer. Granted, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One‘s profitability might be in question next to their exorbitant Covid costs. But these pics have put up tentpole grosses in the nine digits, and have been mass draws (just not as massive as they were hoped to be). Note the filmmakers...

André Øvredal’s The Last Voyage of the Demeter may be based on one chapter of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, but the film has had many chapters in its 25-year development saga.
Co-screenwriter Bragi Schut Jr.’s original script dates back to the late ‘90s, as he felt that Stoker’s “The Captain’s Log” chapter could warrant the Alien-on-a-merchant-ship treatment, with Dracula taking the place of a Xenomorph. In the two-plus decades that followed, creative teams changed several times, and names like David Slade, Neil Marshall, Jude Law, Noomi Rapace, Ben Kingsley and Viggo Mortensen came and went.
Guillermo del Toro was also once attached to the project, and when his schedule became an issue, he quickly recommended Øvredal as his replacement. Del Toro had just produced Øvredal’s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (2019), so the two filmmakers had some early discussions about the project before setting sail.

"Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" might be the ideal stepping stone for younger horror fans not yet ready for the really intense stuff. The film came out in 2019, but it harkens back to creepy older family films like "The Watcher in the Woods" and "Return to Oz" -- that is, films that put their young protagonists in legitimately horrifying situations and left you wondering if they'd make it out okay. "Scary Stories" goes even further by having terrible things actually happen to its heroes. The only problem is it backtracks on this a little at the very end, tacking on a short epilogue that ties up some loose plot threads a little too neatly while also setting the stage for a sequel.
That's far from a dealbreaker, however, and general audiences were just as keen on the film as critics, with "Scary Stories" racking up $95.6 million at the...

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark was a breakout hit at the box office this year, as the PG-13 horror film ended up grossing over $100 million against a budget of just $28 million. Given the massive success of the pic as well as the way it ends, it seems inevitable that a sequel will soon be announced and while nothing is official as of yet, the studio is already reportedly getting started on mapping out the highly-anticipated follow-up.
That’s right, according to our sources – the same ones who said a new Scream is in the works and that a Swamp Thing movie is in development, both of which have since been confirmed (the latter by Bloody Disgusting) – Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark 2 is now beginning to come together. And better yet, it’s expected to bring back most of the original cast, along with director André Øvredal.

Zoe Colletti is joining Fear The Walking Dead as a new series regular for the upcoming sixth season of the AMC series. Additionally, we’ll be seeing more of Sarah and Wes. Mo Collins and Colby Hollman, who have recurred, respectively, as the characters, have been promoted to series regulars for the new season. No details are being revealed about Colletti’s character, other than it is “a pivotal new role that will unfurl as the season progresses.”
Collins’ Sarah was introduced in season four after encountering Morgan (Lennie James) at a truck stop. She then joins the group, along with her brother, on their mission to help those in need. Hollman’s Wes, though initially reluctant to accept help from the group, eventually comes around to their philosophy and joins them, only to be split up by Virginia (Colby Minifie) in the season finale.

Alex Ginno has joined Brad Fuller and Andrew Form’s Fully Formed as head of film.
The company has a three-year first-look deal with Paramount, where they recently wrapped production on “A Quiet Place: Part II” and are currently prepping Season 3 of the hit show “Jack Ryan” for Amazon. The second season recently bowed, with John Krasinski reprising his role as the title character and Wendell Pierce returning to play James Greer. The show has earned rave reviews and has become one of Amazon’s more popular series.
Prior to joining Fully Formed, Ginno served as senior vice president of development and production at CBS Films, where his projects included “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark,” directed by Andre Ovredal and produced by Guillermo del Toro. From Niña Medeiros in the Rec movies to the Crooked Man in The Conjuring 2 and KeyFace from Insidious: The Last Key, Javier Botet is a master at bringing cinematic nightmares to life through his creature performances. His recent role as the Big Toe Corpse in Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (based on the books by writer Alvin Schwartz and artist Stephen Gammell) is another iconic creepy performance, and with the film now on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD from Lionsgate, Daily Dead had the great pleasure of catching up with Botet to discuss bringing the Big Toe Corpse to undead life, reteaming with Guillermo del Toro (who produced and co-wrote Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark), working with fellow creature performance actor "Twisty" Troy James on It Chapter Two, and he also shared his hopes to reprise his role as the Crooked Man in a Conjuring spinoff film.

This weekend will see a flurry of activity, beginning with a battle at the top for #1 between Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and Joker. Might the Clown Prince of Crime spoil Maleficent's hopes for a second weekend at #1? Elsewhere, several expanding and new releases take the stage including the Stx thriller Countdown and the corrupt cop thriller Black and Blue from Screen Gems. Additionally, films including Parasite and The Lighthouse will expand along with holdover expansions including Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Lionsgate's horror Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.
At the top of the box office we're currently expecting Maleficent: Mistress of Evil to hold off Joker by the narrowest of margins, dipping -54% in its second weekend for a $17 million three-day. This drop is a bit better than the -58% dip for Alice Through the Looking Glass, after it opened with...

For the past 17 years, there’s been a Dracula film project trying to get made called The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Well, the project has recently landed at Steven Spielberg’s Amblin and it will be directed by André Øvredal, who recently helmed Guillermo del Toro’s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.
The story centers around the ship that transported Dracula from Transylvania to London in Bram Stoker's classic tale. In that novel, the Demeter washes up on the shores of England, tattered and broken, with one raving mad survivor. Schut's script places the voyage center stage in a tale that is said to be reminiscent of the first Alien movie, in which a crew is slaughtered one-by-one by a mysterious passenger.
The script for the film was originally written in 2002 by Bragi Schut (Season of the Witch), the script tells the tale of that journey.

Gerard Butler’s “Angel Has Fallen” easily topped the Labor Day holiday weekend with $14.8 million at 3,336 locations in North America, for an 11-day total of nearly $44 million.
The Lionsgate-Millennium title, the third entry in the action franchise, stars Butler as a Secret Service Agent trying to clear his name after being framed for an attack on the U.S. President, played by Morgan Freeman. “Angel Has Fallen,” which took in $21 million in its opening weekend, could wind up matching the $62 million taken in by 2016’s “London Has Fallen” but will probably fall short of the $98 million domestic total for 2013’s “Olympus Has Fallen.”
It’s a typical performance for a Labor Day weekend with studios avoiding the roll out of major titles and relying on holdovers. The third weekend of “Crazy Rich Asians” led last year’s holiday weekend with $28.6 million. In 2017, the third weekend of “The Hitman’s...

Universal’s “Good Boys” has done something that is becoming increasingly rare with its $21 million No. 1 opening at the box office. Not only is it the first original R-rated comedy in three years to top the box office charts, it is also only the second original film of any kind to open at No. 1 this year.
“Good Boys” was positioned by Universal to take advantage of this quieter August period after Spider-Man, Simba and Thanos have taken their share of summer moviegoers’ money. But Universal has also become a studio that has consistently found success with comedy at a time when so many titles in the genre have failed.
While a “Hangover”-level hit remains elusive, “Good Boys” joins films like “Night School,” “Ride Along 2” and the $115 million-grossing “Girls Trip” as Universal mid-budget comedies that have turned a profit in the last three years.

A great August for Universal continues this weekend with the release of “Good Boys,” an R-rated comedy that is surprising at the box office with an estimated $20.8 million opening from 3,204 screens. That will make the Seth Rogen-produced raunchfest the first R-rated comedy to top the charts since “The Boss” in April 2016.
On Friday, “Good Boys” earned $8.3 million and did well with audiences, earning a B+ on CinemaScore to go with its 79% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics. The film had been projected for a modest $11-12 million opening this weekend, but will now continue Universal’s streak of comedies like “Night School,” “Girls Trip” and “Blockers” as solid, mid-budget successes at a time when so many adult comedies have failed to take off in theaters.

Updated, Thursday Am: Sony’s Angry Birds 2 ranked 4th yesterday with $1.6M, -36% for a running two day total of $4.2M. Disney’s Lion King and Universal’s Hobbs & Shaw are currently fighting over No. 1 Wednesday with $2.3M a piece. By the way, this whole flooding of the early August marketplace with several wide releases was going on last year at this time, however, it was four wide entries each for the first and second weekend, not five like this year. The only difference is that we had powerful pics like Meg and Crazy Rich Asians rising to the top last August while distributors are largely delivering low budget fare.

Teenagers and twenty-somethings would never trade a Netflix binge for a trip to the theater, right?
Not true, says a new report from movie-polling service PostTrak, which found people ages 18 to 24 make up the largest segment of moviegoers. People within that small age range represented a quarter of all ticket buyers over the last seven years.
The results from PostTrak, a service owned by Comscore and Screen Engine, offered encouraging news for studios: Members of the most coveted demographic — a group many feared had been lost to streaming — are willing to spend upwards of $20 for a movie ticket even though they’re flooded with entertainment choices that also allow them to wear pajamas.
About half of moviegoers are under 25 and half are over 25, with just 11% over 55.
Data aggregated from 1.25 million consumers polled by PostTrak for 1,002 films found that 34.4% of movie goers say they “frequently” stream movies and TV.

Guillermo del Toro's Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (directed by André Ovredal) is finally in theaters, and is ramping up to be one of the biggest movies of the Summer - not to mention horrifying. The movie is based on Alvin Schwartz's children's trilogy, which was originally illustrated by Stephen Gammell. In fact, del Toro read the books in his youth and found Gammell's illustrations to be "unsettling."
The books are a series of spooky, keep-the-lights-on-forever stories born out of folklore and legends that we all have likely heard throughout the years in varying forms even if we've never read the books. Schwartz did a lot of research through the Library of Congress and American Folklore Society and consulted folklore books like American Folk Tales when coming up with scary stories. The movie adapts several scary tales from Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (1981), More...

Last month at the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con, director André Øvredal and producer Guillermo del Toro were joined by legendary special effects artists Mike Elizalde, Norman Cabrera, and Mike Hill to discuss just how they brought the various characters from the recently released adaptation of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark to life on the big screen. And to this writer, it just made more sense to share their insights into the effects process after fans had a chance to see the movie for themselves.
So with that in mind, here are more of the highlights from their informative and engaging Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark panel that dug into everything we needed to know about creating The Pale Lady, Harold, Big Toe, and the Jangly Man (you can read part one of our panel coverage Here).

Still standing tall on top of the box-office weekend countdown was Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, which held onto first place for the second week in a row. The latest offering of the “Fast & Furious” franchise took in $25.4 million this weekend, giving it a two-week tally of $108.5 million and an ever-so-slight first-place finish over newcomer Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, which debuted with $20.8 million.
Just behind the top weekend finishers was The Lion King (2019), which dropped one spot to third place with a $20 million domestic tally, and a four-week total of $473.1 million. The second film debuting in the top ten this week, Dora and the Lost City of Gold, finished in fourth place with $17 million and positive reviews all around. Meanwhile, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was also felled a few spots by the newcomers as Quentin Tarantino’s latest dropped to fifth place (from...

Quentin Tarantino broke his silence on the backlash to “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” during the film’s recent Moscow press conference. One of the biggest points of controversy surrounding the film is the scene in which Bruce Lee (Mike Moh) and Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) fight each other on the set of “The Green Hornet.” Bruce Lee’s daughter, Shannon, condemned Tarantino for portraying the martial arts legend as an “arrogant asshole who was full of hot air,” while Lee’s protégé Dan Inosanto said the film did not accurately portray the late action star. Inosanto pointed to a line in Tarantino’s script where Bruce Lee makes a dig at Muhammad Ali and said Lee “would have never said anything derogatory about Muhammad Ali because he worshiped the ground Muhammad Ali walked on.”

The August box office is more than living up to its name as a dumping ground, fueling the identity crisis facing Hollywood amid Disney's record-breaking domination, mergers and the rise of streamers. Over the weekend, no fewer than five movies opened nationwide, and the results weren't pretty.
The only title to impress was Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, an adaptation of the best-selling children's horror book series by Alvin Schwartz that was produced and co-written by Guillermo del Toro. The pic opened to $20.8 million, good enough to place second behind holdover Hobbs & Shaw.

Truth be told, there are some weekends when I sit here and realize that the box office report is going to be a bit…dry. That is to say that there’s just not too much to talk about, or perhaps I’m just sick of talking about another silly record being broken by Disney. It gets boring. This weekend, dear reader, that is not the case as Hollywood has decided to release no less than 6 films in relatively wide release and the Top 10 is drastically different than even 7 days ago.

Despite plenty of new nationwide offerings, Universal’s blockbuster “Hobbs & Shaw” pulled ahead of the competition to maintain its reign at the domestic box office.
The “Fast & Furious” spinoff — starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham — collected $25.4 million during its second weekend of release. Those ticket sales mark a 58% decline from its inaugural outing, on par with past franchise entries. After nine days in theaters, the tentpole has earned $108 million in North America and $224 million overseas.
Though “Hobbs & Shaw” retained the box office crown, CBS Films, eOne and Lionsgate’s “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark” came within striking distance, debuting at No. 2 with a strong $20.8 million from 3,135 theaters. The PG-13 thriller, adapted from the popular children’s horror book series, was directed by Andre Ovredal and produced by Guillermo del Toro. “Scary Stories” tied 2012’s “The Woman in Black” as CBS Film’s biggest opening to date.

Universal’s “Hobbs & Shaw” led new releases and holdovers this weekend with $25 million grossed in its second frame, pushing the “Fast & Furious” spinoff to a 10-day domestic total of $108 million.
That result for the “Fast & Furious” spinoff is a 58% drop from its $60 million opening. While “Fate and the Furious” had a similar drop from its $98 million opening two years ago, “Hobbs & Shaw” is now falling behind the pace of “Mission: Impossible – Fallout.”
That Tom Cruise action film had a similar start to “Hobbs & Shaw,” opening in late July last year to a $60 million opening, but it held on better with just a 42% drop in its second weekend. “Hobbs & Shaw” is still looking to its release in China in two weeks, hoping to continue the “Fast & Furious”‘ winning streak in that country.

“Hobbs & Shaw” raced past its competition this weekend, taking in another $7 million in Friday’s domestic ticket sales for a projected $25 million sophomore outing.
If estimates hold, the “Fast and Furious” spinoff could increase its domestic haul to around $108 million, in addition to a hefty bounty overseas. “Hobbs & Shaw” is also tracking just ahead of newcomer “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark,” which took home around $8.7 million in Friday ticket sales. The Lionsgate, CBS Films and eOne adaptation launched at 3,135 locations and is on track for about $20 million come Sunday.
That’s ahead of early estimates, which placed the film around $15 to $19 million, narrowly edging out Disney’s “The Lion King,’ now in its fourth weekend. “Trollhunter” helmer André Øvredal directed the film with Guillermo del Toro producing.
