Soon after “Saltburn” debuted on Amazon Prime, it joined the 1 million watch club on Letterboxd (the leading social media app for film lovers) and was one of the fastest to do so this year. The film has completely taken over social media due to its provocative, erotic sensibilities. “Transfixing and hypnotic, writer/director Emerald Fennell has crafted a provocative and diabolical masterpiece”, writes Awards Daily. Despite being nearly a month since its release, “Saltburn” remains in the top 3 most watched programs on the platform, film or television, in both the UK and US.
“Saltburn” reaped five bids at the Critics’ Choice Awards including Best Picture. Lead Barry Keoghan and scene-stealer Rosamund Pike contended at the Globes. Fennell’s sophomore feature merited 11 longlist mentions at BAFTA.

Exclusive: The BBC has acquired broadcast rights to the British indie drama Kindling from debut feature filmmaker Connor O’Hara, which played in Competition at the 2023 Shanghai International Film Festival.
Written and directed by O’Hara, the pic was the first British film to screen at Shanghai in six years. The BBC’s license on the pic begins in November and lasts three years. Signature Entertainment released the film in the UK and Ireland and brokered the deal with the BBC. However, first contact was made with the broadcaster by Jamie Gamache, who produced the pic alongside Mark Foligno and first approached BBC buyer Simon Chilcott with the project.
“It’s sometimes quite clear what the BBC is after, and Kindling definitely felt like it,” Gamache told Deadline.

Dda is making a series of key hires and promotions. Ryan Langrehr recently joined the entertainment communications company as U.S. head of awards, based out of Los Angeles. He joins from Block-Korenbrot Public Relations and will work alongside Dda partner Dana Archer and awards strategist Mj Peckos, who formed an exclusive partnership with Dda in 2021 and collaborated on a slate of films in the international and documentary category. These included Spain’s “The Good Boss” and Germany’s “I’m Your Man,” both of which were shortlisted for international feature Oscars.
The Dda L.A. awards offering is a complement to the company’s existing U.K. awards business, which it says will offer studios and filmmakers a “cohesive strategy across both sides of the Atlantic.” The U.K. offering is led by Sam Ross in his newly upped role of director of awards, and his team works closely with Dda partner Neil Bhatt.

The Uncertain Kingdom Fund, which disburses development coin to U.K. film projects, is opening submissions for its second round from May 23-June 20.
The fund was set up to support projects that interrogate British culture, asking questions of identity, the current journey and the future. It was created to address the challenges directors and producers face creating sustainable careers and targets filmmakers who have previously made a feature.
The stated aim of the fund is to take a hands-off approach and support filmmakers from a range of backgrounds and experiences. Projects of 70-plus minutes in any form or genre that are currently at treatment or script stage are eligible to apply. Filmmakers must be residents of the U.K. but need not be British.

Warning: contains spoilers for Peaky Blinders season 6 episode 4 ‘Sapphire’
Esme’s a dark horse. In ‘Sapphire’, John Shelby’s widow revealed a secret she’s been keeping from Tommy Shelby. In the time since Esme escaped the Peaky Blinders and set out to raise her children “among decent people” on the road, she met a woman named Zelda. In May 1914, Zelda had become pregnant after sleeping with a man under a hazel tree at the Appleby Horse Fair. By the time Zelda’s dad found out and issued the usual death threats, the man in question – a 24-year-old Tommy Shelby – had enlisted in the army and left for France, ignorant of the pregnancy. Zelda had the baby, and by the time Tommy returned from war, he was unwittingly the father of a four-year-old son with hazel eyes.

Warning: contains Peaky Blinders Series 5 spoilers.
Since Peaky Blinders broke through on Netflix in the US, its creators have dropped hints about the Hollywood superstars lobbying for roles in the Birmingham-based gangster drama. Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Snoop Dogg, Samuel L. Jackson and more are all fans of the show, and apparently keen to come aboard. Those names don’t appear among the series six cast announced below (though who knows about the planned follow-up feature film), but it’s obvious that Peaky Blinders has no trouble attracting serious talent. Series six welcomes acclaimed This is England, Boardwalk Empire, The Virtues and Line of Duty‘s Stephen Graham, and welcomes back Tom Hardy once again as the apparently unkillable Alfie Solomons. Both will appear in Peaky Blinders’ final TV series, alongside one of the finest British regular casts around. We’ll update this list as more details are confirmed.

Kingsley Ben-Adir didn’t get enough traction during the awards season to get Oscar or BAFTA nominations for Best Actor for his role as Malcolm X in “One Night in Miami,” but he did make the BAFTA lineup for the Rising Star Award, which is a breakthrough prize for up-and-coming actors. Unlike other BAFTA categories, which are decided by the British academy, the Rising Star champ is voted on by the general public. And according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, Ben-Adir will prevail.
Because this award is decided by the general public, the winners tend to be the highest-profile stars in the category, like Tom Hardy the year he broke out in “Inception” (2010), John Boyega right after “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” (2015), Tom Holland after debuting as Spider-Man in “Captain America: Civil War” (2016), and Daniel Kaluuya in the wake of “Get Out” (2017). “Saint Maud,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Nomadland,” “The Trial of the Chicago 7” and “Ammonite” are among the leading films on the British Academy of Film and Television Arts’ (BAFTA) longlist for annual British Film Awards that were announced Thursday.
The publication of the longlists follows the BAFTA 2020 Review, where over 120 wide-ranging changes were introduced across voting, membership and campaigning to address a lack of diversity in the 2020 Film Awards nominations. As part of these changes, a new longlisting initial round was introduced for the awards, resulting in three rounds of voting. Round one voting, which took place from Jan. 12-26, produced the longlists in all categories.
The directing category sees the BAFTA make an effort towards gender parity. To determine this longlist, in Round One, the directing chapter voted and the top eight female and top eight male directed films were automatically longlisted. The remaining two female and two...

These aren’t nominations, so drawing too many conclusions from them is premature at this stage. However, if a title didn’t make the cut here, it won’t be getting a nom.
A few takeaways: as per the Globes, Minari is in for foreign-language movie but not for Best Film (Another Round made both); Tenet missed both Best Film and British Film but did make Director and below-the-line categories; Spike Lee isn’t on the Director list, but Da 5 Bloods is on nine including Best Film and Screenplay; Malcolm & Marie missed everything aside from the two lead performances; zilch for On The Rocks, and fairly slim pickings for Apple in total,...

In his latest podcast/interview, host and screenwriter Stuart Wright talks with County Lines writer/director Henry Blake about his debut feature film and the creative processes that got him there.
The term ‘county lines’ describes the practice of using children to traffic drugs from cities to coastal towns and rural areas, an under-reported fact of modern British life. Inspired by the stories he heard while mentoring kids at an East London pupil referral unit, writer-director Henry Blake’s powerful feature debut boasts a compelling central performance by Conrad Khan as 14-year-old Tyler, whose mum Toni (Ashley Madekwe) is struggling to provide for him and his sister. Excluded from school, Tyler becomes a train-bound narcotics courier for local criminal Simon, played with a calm menace by Harris Dickinson. This year, in films such as Perfect 10, Lynn + Lucy and County Lines, working-class lives are once again making it on to the big screen. But in an industry dominated by the privately educated, can they avoid being tainted with middle-class misapprehensions?
There are working-class heroes and there are unsung heroes. Take Lucy Pardee, the casting director of Rocks and Perfect 10, two of the year’s outstanding British films, both about working-class teenage girls. What Pardee does is traditionally called street casting – finding non-professional actors from backgrounds that don’t usually open doors to a career in the arts. (Her credits include films by Andrea Arnold and Jonathan Glazer).
To assemble the girl squad in Rocks, a gorgeously warm drama about teenage friendship in east London, Pardee went into 14 schools and auditioned 1,300 children. “I literally stood up in front of assemblies and said: ‘You might not see yourself on screen,...

County Lines is one of the most impressive British films to be released this year, and to mark the digital release, we had the pleasure of speaking to its three leading cast-members, Harris Dickinson, Ashley Madekwe and Conrad Khan. The film, which takes a raw and uncompromising look on how youngsters can be so easily manipulated and recruited to push drugs, features a fine ensemble, and with Dickinson, arguably the most high-profile of the collective, he talks about the difference in making films like Maleficent, to shooting on projects like County Lines.
With Madekwe we ask how familiar a London landscape this film paints, and whether she has met or encountered anyone before who is similar to that of the characters that make up this affecting drama. She also talks about her own career, and which brilliant actors helped guide her when she was young and getting into the industry...

Between my first and second viewings of County Lines, the debut film from youth worker Henry Blake, a fatal turn of events went global. In a halcyon, pre-Covid February, I watched the film in the relative comfort of the BFI Southbank in London. People were spread apart because of low attendance rather than social distancing, likely due to the film’s tiny budget and horrifying subject-matter. I wrote at the time, in an early draft of this review, that it’s an underrated pleasure to watch a small and difficult film projected on a tall and luxurious screen.
Originally slated for April, County Lines is one of the first films to be released in cinemas after Lockdown 2.0, but only in Tier 1 and Tier 2 areas. I’m restricted to a Tier 3 zone, so perhaps the chance to see the film again in a cinema has dissolved. But for those living in the lower tiers,...

His schoolmates had no idea he had a secret life as an actor. As he plays a drugs courier in an unflinching new film, Khan talks about fitting it all in – and how Covid has killed kissing on set
Conrad Khan was filming in a fried chicken shop not far from where he actually lives. In the scene, his character’s bullying schoolmates come in and demand he hand over his chips. Then, as shooting began, Khan’s real-life schoolmates turned up, curious about a film crew in their local hangout. “They looked in,” laughs Khan, “and did a double take. They were so confused. They didn’t know I’m an actor. So I was quite proud. Yeah, quite cool.”
County Lines, the film Khan stars in, portrays another kind of double life. Khan plays Tyler, a quiet, troubled 14-year-old with an absent father, a hard-up mother, and little to look forward to.

Recruiting into the drug trade isn’t difficult when impoverished youth from broken homes are desperate to find purpose and escape. With school and family often devoid of the resources to properly engage or distract, a little flash of money or a seemingly sympathetic shoulder go a long way. Prove that you’re their champion and savior and they’ll do anything in return. Look no further than fourteen-year-old Tyler (Conrad Khan) after constantly getting in trouble for fighting back against bullies. If the school punishes him despite being the victim and his mother (Ashley Madekwe’s Toni) barely has time to sleep while working night shifts let alone show face with the principal, why wouldn’t he gravitate towards a man (Harris Dickinson’s Simon) who willingly stands up to protect him instead?

Sullenly adrift between an unhappy childhood and an adult future that promises little, an introverted 14-year-old boy is lured all too easily into the world of county lines drug trafficking: a practice that sees vulnerable youths recruited by gangs to ferry drugs from cities to rural areas, with no protection on the other side. If the premise of Henry Blake’s taut, claustrophobic debut feature seems familiar, that’s because it’s built on ugly, unavoidable reality. Narratively, “County Lines” could have been ripped from any number of recent headlines anxiously tracking a growing social problem across Britain, but its tangible dead-end atmosphere, sharp sense of local geography and quietly expressive performances keep it from feeling like a teacherly PSA — and distinguish it from various glossier teen-terror dramas across the Atlantic.
