Zendaya’s seemingly futuristic body armor actually has a long history steeped in cinema and pop culture.
At the root of it all is the likeness to the female robot, often called “Maria,” in Fritz Lang’s masterwork of futurism, Metropolis. Maria has inspired countless cultural references including the images of Lang’s robot used in David Bowie and Queen’s video for “Under Pressure”; a profound influence on Ralph McQuarrie’s designs for C-3Po in Star Wars; inspiring looks worn by Beyoncé, Madonna, Kylie Minogue and Lady Gaga; providing the concept of Janelle Monáe’s Metropolis: The Chase Suite album; and serving as a background for Whitney Houston’s music video for “Queen of the Night” as well references in the The Bodyguard.
The actual suit that Zendaya wore to the world premiere is an archival creation from fashion designer Thierry Mugler’s fall/winter 1995 couture collection. Per...

Cannes — For years, reports of MipTV’s terminal decline were somewhat exaggerated. Now, however, they’re real. On March 26, Rx France, organizers of MipTV, announced the launch of Mip London, over Feb. 23-28, 2025. MipTV’s 2024 edition will be its last.
Attendance, once 10,000 in 2018, 9,500 in 2019, had plunged to 5,510 on-site delegates last year. That still made it the second biggest TV event in the world. Still dwindling participation this year, is down to around 3,000.
What a MipTV swan song, bulwarked by Canneseries, can deliver, is another question. 10 takes on this year’s edition:
MipTV Sticking to Its Guns
Traditionally, MipTV delivered a straight sales market where sales companies or divisions hold back-to-back meetings with distributors who get links to their shows. History has hardly been on MipTV’s side. As simply raising the finance for a show in an environment of rising costs and declining commissions has become more and more of a challenge,...

"The world's caught up." A violent courtyard scuffle between teens roils into a string of increasingly devious and vengeful acts perpetrated by their parents in creator Lucas Paraízo’s “The Others.” Slated to screen at this week’s Mipcom market in Cannes, the Globoplay original series tackles masculinity and miscommunication with urgency.
Paraízo, whose prior medical drama “Under Pressure” sold to more than 60 countries, expressed an interest in breaking down the intricacies surrounding the frail state of human connection and points to intolerance for a lack of constructive everyday dialogue.
“The series brought this idea to a scenario in which neighbors don’t know how to live with differences and are unable to accept the view of the ‘other.’ In that sense, I consider the series to be quite universal. We all live surrounded by neighbors anywhere in the world, but we’re increasingly less willing to dialogue and negotiate points of view,” Paraízo told Variety.
Paraízo, whose prior medical drama “Under Pressure” sold to more than 60 countries, expressed an interest in breaking down the intricacies surrounding the frail state of human connection and points to intolerance for a lack of constructive everyday dialogue.

When Queen + + Adam Lambert launched the 2023 leg of their Rhapsody tour last week, they dipped deep into the Queen catalog and resurrected the 1984 deep cut “Is This the World We Created…?” for the first time since Lambert stepped into the role as frontman. The song was written in response to African poverty and was famously played at Live Aid in 1985, but it took on a new meaning at New York’s Madison Square Garden on Thursday night in the aftermath of the massacre in Israel.

Queen ruled Baltimore’s Cfg Bank Arena Wednesday night (October 4th) as they kicked off their North American “Rhapsody Tour.”
Original band members Brian May and Roger Taylor — plus vocalist Adam Lambert — spent two hours tearing through over two dozen Queen tunes, with a career-spanning setlist that featured both their biggest hits as well as fan-favorite deep cuts.
Notably, the band played “Is This the World We Created…?” live with Lambert for the first time, and dusted off “Stone Cold Crazy” after more than five years.
May, Taylor, and Lambert were backed by Queen’s longtime keyboard player Spike Edney, bass guitarist Neil Fairclough, and percussionist Tyler Warren, comprising an ensemble whose sound filled the entire arena. It was a night that served as a tribute to Freddie Mercury, keeping his songs and spirit alive without ever overshadowing his bright legacy.

Ice Ice Baby. Go Ninja Go Ninja Go. If a guy was everywhere in 1990 and 1991, it was Vanilla Ice. A white rapper from Dallas, Texas – whose real name is Rob Van Winkle, the much-mocked but extremely popular rapper scored a multi-platinum debut with his album To The Extreme, which sold seven million copies and, at the time, was the fastest-selling hip-hop album of all time. His signature track, “Ice Ice Baby”, which sampled Queen’s “Under Pressure”, was the highest-charting rap single ever, as was his cover of “Play That Funky Music”.
Vanilla Ice was so popular among teens that he showed up as himself in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: The Secret of the Ooze, where he sang “Ninja Rap” (Go Ninja Go). But, just as quickly as he rose, Vanilla Ice fell, with his acting debut, Cool As Ice, widely mocked as one of the worst films of...

Queen and Adam Lambert are returning to North America for their Rhapsody Tour. This marks their first concert series in the U.S. since 2019. The tour starts on October 4 in Baltimore, Maryland, and concludes on November 11 in Los Angeles, California.
Queen guitarist Brian May told Rolling Stone that the tour has “lots of new bells and lots of new whistles.” He continued, saying that the band has improved their chemistry with Lambert and has “evolved as performers.”
The tour’s setlist will include Queen’s classic songs like “Somebody to Love” and “Another One Bites The Dust” as well as lesser-known tracks like “A King of Magic” and “Tear It Up,” which they played during their European tour last year.
Queen and Lambert first performed together at the 2009 finale of American Idol. They started to regularly collaborate in 2012 and have toured over the subsequent decade.

Only a few artists were lucky enough to work with John Lennon. He primarily worked solo after The Beatles disbanded, but he did some collaborations with artists such as Elton John and David Bowie. While Queen became a prominent band during the 1970s, guitarist Brian May never had the opportunity to work with John Lennon before his death.

Taika Waititi and Sterlin Harjo have a routine they’ve done at parties that kills. They perfected it at Sundance in the early 2000s, in a condo dance-off with two Navajo guys. “Taika would strike this Michael Jackson pose with his hand pointing in the air and unbutton the pearl button on his shirt,” says Harjo, the Seminole-Muskogee director with whom Waititi would go on to co-create the FX comedy series Reservation Dogs in 2019. “And I was the wind in his shirt.” The duo also delivered a full-throated karaoke version of Queen’s “Under Pressure,” for which they still get requests.
Before he became a global acting-writing-directing star with an Oscar and a Marvel résumé, Waititi, a Maori-Jewish filmmaker from New Zealand, found community in the U.S. among Native American filmmakers like Harjo. “One of the things we all connected on was our disdain for how we appear onscreen in white productions,...

Paul Mescal’s roles leave an impact, with the movies he chooses reflecting a daring artistic sensibility. He delivered an iconic needle drop moment while “Under Pressure” in “Aftersun,” but the Oscar nominee is now turning into a musician himself.
Mescal stars in dance-infused film “Carmen,” and released a music video featuring original song “Slip Away.” Nicholas Britell of “Succession” fame composes the original songs, with Mescal’s co-stars Melissa Barrera, The D.O.C., and Rossy de Palma lending their voices to various tracks.

Laine Hardy could well win “American Idol” on Sunday according to our poll of viewers. He has narrowed the gap with frontrunner Alejandro Aranda to just seven points (48-41). Right after the Top 3 were revealed on the May 12 episode of “American Idol,” Alejandro enjoyed a 10-point advantage. In the intervening week, the third finalist, Madison VanDenburg, has slipped even further behind, with just 11% support.
This trip of talent made it through to the final on May 19 based on their votes from the public last Sunday. Just missing out on a place in the Top 3 were Laci Kaye Booth and Wade Cota (Was one of them robbed of a place in the final?) On that Top 5 episode, each of them sang three songs: one from the Elton John catalog, another in honor of Mother’s Day, and a third chosen by mentor Bobby Bones.

On the May 12 episode of “American Idol,” the Top 5 sang three songs apiece: one in honor of Mother’s Day, another picked by mentor Bobby Bones, and a third from the Elton John back catalog. Only three of the five contestants made it through based on their votes from the public: Alejandro Aranda, Laine Hardy and Madison VanDenburg. This result meant the end of the road for Laci Kaye Booth and Wade Cota (Was one of them robbed of a place in the final?)
We asked for your predictions as to which of the three finalists will go all the way to win season 17 on May 19. “Idol” fans remain divided between two of the artists: Alejandro has 49% of the viewers vote as of this writing and Laine is at 39%. Each is up by eight points from last week, as they split the support for Wade. The third contender for the season 17 title,...

Alejandro Aranda is the frontrunner to win season 17 of “American Idol” based on the nine songs he has sung on the reality competition series so far. We wondered which of these was your favorite. Tops in our poll of viewers is “Poison,” the original tune that Alejandro performed on the Top 6 show on May 5.
His self-penned song registered a whopping 47% of the vote while his other number that evening, Jefferson Airplane‘s “White Rabbit,” netted just 6%. If you haven’t voted in our poll yet, be sure to do so at the bottom of this post and then sound off in our comments section with your thoughts on this reboot of “American Idol.”
In third and fourth place respectively are the two tunes Alejandro crooned at the start of his journey: the Coldplay hit “Yellow” and “I Fall Apart” by Post Malone with 20% and 12% respectively. Surprisingly, his other original song,...

Laci Kaye Booth is almost certain to face elimination on “American Idol” this Sunday according to the results of our poll of viewers. She only made the final five on last Sunday’s episode when Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie decided to use their one judges save of the season to keep her in the competition. But she has earned only a measly 6% in our survey of “American Idol” fans heading into the Top 5 show on May 12.
The other contestant joining her in the bottom two is likely to be Madison VanDenburg who merited a mere 8% in our poll results. All five singers still in the competition will take to the stage on Sunday to perform a trio of tunes. Each will sing a song from the Elton John catalog, another picked out by mentor Bobby Bones and a third in honor of Mother’s Day.

Alejandro Aranda is the frontrunner to win season 17 of “American Idol.” He has led our predictions ever since the Top 40 were revealed on the ABC revival of this reality series way back on March 31. Since then, this 25-year-old dishwasher from Ponom CA has sung nine songs. Which of these do you think has been his best song to date? Vote in our poll below and then sound off in our comments section with your thoughts on this reboot of “American Idol.”
Do you think that Alejandro shone most with one of the two tunes he sang on the May 5 episode that saw the Top 6 reduced to the final five? Those songs were “White Rabbit” by Jefferson Airplane and one that he wrote himself, “Poison.” Or was it his first time in the spotlight when he made “Yellow” by Coldplay his own? Perhaps you favor one of the six other songs...

We are down to the final five on season 17 of “American Idol.” On May 5, the Top 7 took to the stage to sing two songs: one celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Woodstock music festival and the other that was styled as an inspirational showstopper. After the results of the public vote were revealed by Ryan Seacrest, the five contestants still standing are: Alejandro Aranda, Laci Kaye Booth, Wade Cota, Laine Hardy and Madison VanDenburg.
Laci only made it into the Top 5 when judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie opted to use their one save of the season. They chose her over Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon. Do you think this was the right decision? Be sure to cast your vote in our poll. Does Laci’s near-elimination mean that she is out of the running to be crowned the winner of “American Idol” on May 19?
