Made in Abyss Studio Reveals New Original Mermaid Anime Goodbye, Lara - Main Image
Kinema Citrus is known for its various anime adaptations, but now, the studio is working on an intriguing new original project. The studio recently revealed Goodbye, Lara, an upcoming original anime inspired by the iconic Hans Christian Andersen tale, The Little Mermaid.
That’s not to say it’s a straight-up adaptation of the classic story. Instead, it features a decidedly anime spin on the tale, as it features the mermaid Lara who finds herself in modern Japan.
Goodbye, Lara Promises to Be a Modern Retelling of The Little Mermaid — with a Twist
To mark the anime’s announcement, Kinema Citrus shared a special concept trailer for Goodbye, Lara, an anime that’s being produced for the studio’s 15th anniversary.

Renowned anime director Kazuchika Kise, known for directing Ghost in the Shell: Arise, voiced his concerns over the growing prevalence of isekai themes in anime in a recent interview.
In the interview Kise questioned the industry’s fascination with escapist narratives and the apparent decline in more grounded storytelling.
He found the trend particularly strange given the fantastical elements often involved, citing a recent anime with character reborn as vending machine as a prime example.
“There are too many stories that make you think, ‘Does everyone hate the real world that much?’ It’s strange how there are so many stories revolving around reincarnation. Recently, there are even works where characters are reborn as vending machines… I was truly dumbfounded (laughs). When it comes to anime, it feels like there are fewer grounded stories nowadays.“
When asked about what he considers a grounded story, Kise drew comparisons to Ghost in the Shell.

Although horror anime is often defined by how successfully a show scares its viewers, how it chooses to do so is flexible, allowing authors and directors to approach the genre from numerous different angles to create vastly different experiences. While many fans are used to the blood, gore, and jumpscares often associated with horror, there is another sub-genre that can be just as frightening in a far more subtle way: psychological horror. Instead of relying on overt scare tactics, psychological horror aims to spook the audience by using their own mind and sanity against them. By testing the character's emotional boundaries alongside their physical ones, in moments of great distress, viewers are treated to mind-bending yet terrifying experiences that may make or break a character's entire psyche. Sometimes, the monster is merely just a monster, but occasionally, it's something far harder to comprehend, and it's that unpredictable threat that makes this genre so thrilling.

Directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki, FromSoftware’s Elden Ring is a one-of-a-kind video game title. Its gameplay carries a certain experience that cannot be put into words, and one would need to play the game to understand what we are talking about.
Furthermore, for those who crave more of the experience Elden Ring delivers, a Reddit thread created more than a year ago, goes over a list of anime that gives the same vibe as the game. Describing the genre as Dark Fantasy, the original poster asked for other anime series similar to the game, and the community did not disappoint.

At last, we've come to the final anime season of 2023. This has been a tremendous year for animation -- one that saw streaming produce some stone-cold masterpieces, some exquisite international collaborations, one of the greatest anime seasons of all time, the end to a cultural phenomenon, and also plenty of fresh discoveries and original stories. After the fall 2022 season saw an astonishing number of certified bangers (including many of that year's best shows), 2023 wasn't too far behind. It was hard to pick just five shows from this season, as there was something for every type of fan. In the end, however, there were five shows that simply stood above the rest.

With the exception of genre masters like Junji Ito, anime and manga aren’t exactly the most horror-friendly mediums out there. However, from the Cenobite-inspired God Hand of Berserk to the near-Lovecraftian archeology of Made in Abyss, there’s no denying that Japanese artists often manage to sneak in some unexpected scares into their work.
And with decades of Japanese animation to choose from, there are bound to be at least a few oddball productions likely to satisfy audiences with a craving for animated frights. With that in mind, we’ve decided to come up with a list highlighting six of the best anime for horror fans, as not all nightmares have to be in live-action!
While this list is obviously based on personal opinion, we’ll only be considering Japanese productions as proper “anime,” which means no Western animations like Netflix’s Castlevania! With that out of the way,...

As it is widely known, Studio Ghibli has been impacting the anime industry rather significantly throughout the years, with some specific elements, such as the relationship with nature and using kids to comment on rather serious topics. being the most widely implemented. “Made in Abyss” is another of these titles, which goes though, into more mature territory, particularly after a point, when violence becomes a factor. Initially a manga series written and illustrated by Akihito Tsukushi, it then became an anime series and a movie, a video game, while a live-action adaptation is in the works.

What if there was a device that allowed the user to enter other people's dreams? What if one of the devices was stolen by someone who could implant ideas in people's minds to control them? What kind of story could come out of this concept?

AMC Networks has acquired Cool Japan Fund’s anime content distributor Sentai and its assets, including niche subscription streaming service Hidive.
Sentai’s anime-centric direct-to-consumer platform will join AMC Networks’ lineup of targeted streaming services, which includes AMC Plus, Acorn TV, Shudder, Sundance Now and Allblk.
Those digital offerings are in addition to the company’s linear channels AMC, BBC America (a joint venture with BBC Studios), IFC, SundanceTV, We tv and IFC Films.
Per AMC Networks, “With strong industry relationships and access to key content creators in Japan, Sentai distributes and curates one of the anime industry’s most diverse libraries of top trending and classic titles, with its content available on Crunchyroll, Hulu and Amazon Prime, among others.”
Japanese anime is a hot commodity these days, with major players like Sony Pictures Entertainment recently loading up on assets in the genre, one that has a large and vocal global fanbase and convention culture.

It’s a Herculean effort to take a multi-volume manga like author Akihito Tsukushi’s “Made in Abyss,” adapt it into a popular anime television series, and then compress the show into a coherent feature, but the folks at Sentai Filmworks have done just that. Part one, “Made in Abyss: Journey’s Dawn,” will screen around the U.S. in its original Japanese on March 20 and in an English dub on March 25, to be followed at a later date by “Wandering Twilight,” which opened in Japan in January.
While the first half of director Masayuki Kojima’s cinematic cut-down hits more ebbs than flows, its character-driven escapades and colorful fantasy landscape are captivating enough to engage the uninitiated. Give or take a few tweaks to the material, this catchy premise about an adventurous tween girl and her amnesiac robot-boy companion exploring a mysterious chasm in her city adapts decently well...
