House of Villains, E!’s new series featuring reality TV baddies such as Vanderpump Rules’ Jax Taylor and The Apprentice’s Omarosa, is looking to “lean into the comedy” of the genre, according to its exec producer.
John Irwin, who runs Irwin Entertainment and has produced celebrity house shows such as Celebrity Rehab and Sober House, told Deadline, “From the beginning, our strategy was to lean into the comedy of this concept and for the show to parody itself and the genre.”
Irwin explained that the show, which pits the reality villains against each other via a series of challenges in order to win $200,000, was initially developed by the NBCUniversal-owned cable network.
John Irwin
He said that Joel McHale was their first choice. “Not only is he insanely funny, he’s also a hard-core fan of reality television and familiar with most of our cast from his days on The Soup.

At a time when linear networks are largely managing the decline, with live viewing of entertainment programming dropping double digits every year, it is very rare for a net to set a multi-year high in primetime. VH1 did it on Monday this week with the return of Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta and Love & Hip Hop: Miami, which led the Paramount Global network to its highest Monday primetime Live+Same Day adults 18-49 rating (0.557) and share (3.22) in over two years, since April 2020 and March 2020, respectively.
Veteran Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta kicked off the second half of its tenth season with a 0.68 18-49 rating/4.02 share and 756K total viewers in L+Sd, up +6, 26 and 1, respectively vs. Season 10 averages.
Love & Hip Hop: Miami then turned up the heat as its Season 4B premiere (0.66/9p) posted its best demo rating (0.66) and share (3.60) in more than two years, up 57 and 95, respectively vs. the full prior season.

To anyone who watched the first season of VH1’s Love & Hip Hop: Miami this year, Amara La Negra – bold, mahogany-skinned and Afro’d – is a newly minted icon. To Spanish-language TV viewers, she’s been a star for years: as a child, she made regular appearances on Univision’s Sábado Gigante. And now, with hits like the reggae-tinged “What a Bam Bam” soaring into the millions of views on YouTube, La Negra is relishing her biggest spotlight yet. “I’ve always known my purpose in life,” says the 27-year-old singer.

The first season of Love & Hip Hop: Miami was definitely a wild one — and it was hard to shake Episode 1, when producer Young Hollywood told rising artist Amara La Negra to change up her signature Afro-Latina looks, particularly her hair. Hollywood even received death threats after making those insensitive remarks on camera, and the gorgeous songstress exclusively told In Touch about where they stand today. "There is no relationship between us. I cannot be upset when there is truly a lack of knowledge in the culture and about being an Afro-Latina," Amara said via e-mail this week. She also opened up about how it felt to watch her former friend, Veronica Vega, go on a date with him knowing how she felt. "I was surprised at first but after truly being able to see what the world saw conveyed from the both of them on this season, nothing surprises me.

Producer Young Hollywood is facing a serious backlash for comments he made about burgeoning talent Amara La Negara (née Danelys De Los Santos) on Love & Hip Hop: Miami, which premiered on Jan. 1.
Things got heated during the show’s first episode when the producer questioned La Negra’s self identification as an Afro-Latina. After she affirmed her identity, he skeptically asked: “Afro-Latina. Elaborate. Is that because you’re African or is that because you have an Afro?” He then brazenly proceeded to suggest she be “less Macy Gray and more Beyoncé” and mockingly called her the “Nutella Queen” because of her complexion.
