Interesting

Warning: Spoilers
An interesting documentary but the interviewer, Gary Younge, lost it while "interviewing" Richard Spencer. The interview turned into a nasty version of Monty Python's argument room skit.

Just ask the questions, let Spencer talk and press him further if the material warrants it. Ed Bradley from 60 Minutes was the best at handling these situations.

The Interviewer also passes judgements on people after an interviews. Just summarize, move on and let the viewers judge for themselves.

In the end the interviewer does get to the root cause of the anger, fear.

He Does Answer the Question

Warning: Spoilers
Contrary to what's suggested by some users, the interviewer does get to the root cause of what's causing the incidence of anger in America. It's largely economic displacement and loss of privilege. I agree he did lose it in the interview with Richard Spencer. But that's because Spencer is so arrogant, snide, egotistical and delusional. But I agree he argued with Spencer, instead of interviewing him. The documentary should have been longer and more in depth.

Thoughtful, but short

This was a well thought out documentary. It could have been longer though, however. Imagine a good book, but only getting to see the table of contents. It's structure was good, the questions it posed were important, and the answers illuminating. But the film could have delved into those answers more, interviews more people, etc. A good film for anyone worried about America's future.

Oh dear...

I was hoping to find something that would help me understand the mindset of the people in the film, but instead I got an angry man who just wanted to argue with them. I don't blame him for wanting to argue with them, but that's not what I and most other viewers wanted to see. I couldn't watch the whole thing.

Informative, but Limited

White anger amounts to an explosive issue of our time. As subject matter, it's broad in scope while Younge has only an hour to crowd in the material. Then too, I wonder how willing White respondents were to level with a Black interviewer, a pertinent unaddressed factor. Along the hour length thread, host Gary Younge strings out a series of separate interviews with White spokespeople, business owners and ordinary citizens, along with intersectional travels mainly from north to south.

All in all, the thread results in fairly representative citizen opinion among growing White frustrations over race, culture, and the economy. Black man Younge is confrontational with only one interviewee, namely leading White separatist Richard Spencer, which seems understandable given Spencer's reputation. Otherwise, Younge asks probing questions without arguing over those he might disagree with. Chief among the opinions are growing White concern with working class decline, increasing dependency on opioid drugs, and the diminishing percentage of Whites among the general population. Generally these opinions are phrased in non-partisan political manner though Trump is often mentioned as a figure of White hope. Anyway, it's a worthwhile hour without being anything special, the responses probably reaffirming what most concerned folks already know. Nonetheless, for those less informed, it's likely a good introduction to a leading challenge of our time.

Hit the Nail on the Head

I think it was very informative, although it didn't reveal anything I didn't already know. FEAR is was moving across the country. North,South, East and West. White America is so afraid of becoming a minority. And it will happen within the next 20-30 years. They are afraid they will be treated the same way they treated other minorities and that's not going to happen.

Check out Jane Elliott's videos for a true look at White America.

Forgot he was the reporter
januarysgallery17 April 2021
I was interested in watching this to get others opinions but all I heard was the reporters views. He was more interested in arguing with people than listening to them for his interview thus totally missing the point of this film. Bad, bad film and just not worth the time to view. Gary I think someone should interview you because you really have a hard-on towards America. I wasn't going to say this however, if you don't like America, then please go back to England. I love our country - we are a work in progress. I am 74 and have seen mountains of change in my years. Bad film Gary - just spreading dissention again when what we need is caring and working together instead of trying to edge everyone on. That Spencer guy appeared to really be trying to talk to you and you, a big no no in journalism, went all mental on him! You blew it Gary.

Not another one

Just another show miss leading Americans! He is a reporter who doesn't report. Instead of going out talking to people he debates . I don't care about his opinion. I care about reporters trying to think for everyone else. Go to white American go to black American. Ask questions and show us. Don't add your view on things it just adds to racial tensions! It's so much more complex then we can all wrap the brain around . The story's from both sides is all I care to hear about . Don't care to watch a race war propaganda film that fires up the country .

Could have been more...

Statistics, data & open dialogue could lead the film to other places. Probing is good if it opens a genuine conversation to the issues occurring in America. Anecdotal interviews won't paint the entire landscape of the current state in most of the southern & steel towns face; it's complexity is deeper than that. The issue becomes when Younge's own biases & perception of "White" Americans clouds the viewer's opportunity to dissect & interpret for themselves. Good attempt but falls short of what I as a viewer would have liked to interpret & analyze myself. Nonetheless, the film's efforts are there to get a glimpse & performed a further analysis at one's own time.

Bad

At what time did reporters start to debate everyone they talk to. Let's also mention that it's crazy to me he only interviewed people from the south. What about the whole western united states. Do there opinions on race and America not matter. This "documentary" is full of ignorance. Not to mention at one point in time you said the rebel flag is a flag that denies your freedom. You my friend were never denied freedom, nobody alive right now was a slave and nobody alive right now was a slave owner, that comment again was pure ignorance.

British black man writing about USA issues.
TheAppraiserofAmerica20 December 2021
Gary Younge, the so called jouralist walks out. He is argumentative. Does not want to listen. He clearly ALREADY has his mind and his side made up. Almost a complete waste of time. This was simply stupid to even create. Did he come over just to get mad and argue with white people in the USA?
