Questlove may have had a front row seat to the drama—but his mind was understandably elsewhere. During the March 28 episode of The Tonight Show, the 51-year-old musician—with his trophy in tow!—recalled the moment he won the award for Best Documentary Feature for Summer of Soul at the 2022 Oscars—just moments after Chris Rock (the category's presenter) and Will Smith took center stage with their own unexpected moment. Looking back on that "situation," The Roots frontman explained to host Jimmy Fallon that he was really didn't grasp what happened in the moment since he was busy soaking in the full experience of his...

Sense of place is a major theme in the Best Documentary category at this year’s Oscars. The five nominated movies span the globe from India to New York to China and Afghanistan, and the filmmakers involved with each movie joined TheWrap’s awards editor Steve Pond for an engaging conversation about making their movies.
Pond spoke with Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, director of “Summer of Soul;” Jessica Kingdon, director of “Ascension;” Stanley Nelson, director of “Attica;” Monica Hellström, producer of Jonas Poher Rasmussen’s “Flee;” and Sushmit Ghosh, director (with Rintu Thomas) of “Writing with Fire.” All are first time Oscar nominees.
Questlove, a frontman of The Roots, explained that he approached directing “Summer of Soul” with a little trepidation, but was energized by the chance to document the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, an often overlooked cultural moment.
“The thought that something so precious could be discarded, like an uneaten hot dog at a carnival,...

Chris Rock called Licorice Pizza “probably the best movie I saw this year,” introducing his friend the director Paul Thomas Anderson at the National Board of Review gala. “I only saw about four movies.”
The MGM film took NBR’s Best Picture and Anderson best director at awards announced late last year and celebrated with gusto at Cipriani 42nd Street in NYC last night after skipping last year due to Covid.
Anderson is “a person who has never cast me in sh-t. Nothing,” said Rock, scanning the room for star wattage. “No Spielberg? Did Will Smith show up?” (no and yes). “Sean Penn? Who I know has something to do with this war. I know he’s mixed up in it. Sean Penn is being water-boarded as we speak.” Penn (not present) had been on the ground in Ukraine shooting a documentary for Vice Studios about the Russian invasion.

“I believe that a big reason why this ambitious idea of throwing a music festival in Harlem in which somewhere between 70,000 to 90,000 people every weekend would see performances was so that there was something joyous and hopeful for people at that point were kind of at the end of their rope,” Summer of Soul (Or When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) director Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson says about the importance the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival had to a Black America ravaged by violence and assassination.
“It was a healing moment, if you will,” Thompson added during the film’s panel at Deadline’s Contenders Film: The Nominees event. The Roots drummer, bestselling author, musicologist and now Oscar nominee made his feature directorial debut with the feature documentary.
Having premiered at the virtual Sundance Film Festival in 2021, Summer of Soul took home the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award in the documentary categories in Park City.
