When Kanye West Blamed Rihanna For Domestic Violence On David Letterman’s Chat Show In 2019(Photo Credit –Instagram/wikimedia)
Since yesterday, Kanye West has been making headlines owing to a statement that Taylor Swift gave after being named as Time’s “Person of the Year” for 2023. For the unversed, the Blank Space crooner opened up about her feud with Ye and his former wife, Kim Kardashian, in a detailed interview. She also revealed that after receiving massive backlash, she left the US and moved to a different country in order to disappear from the public eye.
Amid all this, we recently came across an old interview with Ye where he made a shocking statement about Rihanna being blamed for domestic violence, which didn’t make it to the live episode of David Letterman’s chat show.

The TV academy has shaken up the Emmy races for Variety Talk and Variety Sketch after seven consecutive victories for HBO’s “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” and six straight for NBC’s “Saturday Night Live”. It rejiggered its rules to revise the categories and force Oliver to move to a new Scripted Variety Series grouping. The popular weekly offering will now compete directly with shows including “SNL,” HBO’s “A Black Lady Sketch Show” and Comedy Central’s “Drunk History.”
Late-night talk shows had dominated the Variety Series Emmy category before it was split into Variety Talk and Variety Sketch in 2015. Since then, it’s been pretty much all “Last Week Tonight” and “SNL.”

As the number of major late-night shows continue to shrink, so does the Television Academy’s window to figure out how to handle the variety talk and variety sketch categories. After the org faced massive blowback in 2020 when it attempted to re-merge talk and sketch (reversing that plan after producers cried foul), it has resisted making any more changes. But given the monumental shift going on in the genre, the Academy will have no choice but map out new rules for 2023.
The recent, tremendously disappointing news that “Desus & Mero” and “Full Frontal With Samantha Bee” — two of the few late-night shows not hosted by middle-aged white dudes — have officially ended, further shrinks next year’s Emmy submission pool. Technically, “Full Frontal” can compete for next year’s trophies due to the fact four episodes aired in June, but the odds are probably not in her favor: “Conan” did not...

David Letterman’s Emmy-nominated talk show series “My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman” is set to return on May 20, Netflix announced on Thursday.
The fourth season of the Netflix original series will feature six episodes and a new selection of guests, including Cardi B, Kevin Durant, Billie Eilish, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Ryan Reynolds and Will Smith.
The show features one-on-one conversations with the legendary talk show host and the celebrity guest inside and outside a studio setting. Season four comes after a long absence from the series, as season three premiered almost 18 months ago in October of 2020.
Notably, the streamer has announced that all of the episodes were filmed prior to March 2022; that means that there will be no talk of the infamous Will Smith-Chris Rock Oscars slap that occurred on March 27.

“Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” has been dominating the variety talk series category, winning the Emmy for three consecutive years — and is the favorite to win a fourth. It’s a great show, and deserves every accolade it can get. But Oliver’s streak also exposes another category conundrum for the TV Academy: As news-based comedy series take over the talk category, where does that leave traditional chat shows?
A new generation of single-topic, weekly comedy shows has sprung up in recent years, and it’s changing the face of talk. Among them are “Last Week Tonight,” “Full Frontal With Samantha Bee” and “Patriot Act With Hasan Minhaj.” Online pop-culture journal the Ringer calls them “explainer shows,” as they often inform younger viewers with their deep dives into topics that sometimes get little attention in the mainstream media.

Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton appeared on My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman season two, sharing stories of how he got into motor racing, the dangers of his profession and his biggest influences.

Hamilton recalled a minor speeding incident where he was recognized by the officer, and then expressed, "I'm really chilled on the road. I don't particularly like driving, so I don't drive a lot." “Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown” scored six Emmy nominations this year, including two for Bourdain himself: Outstanding Informational Series or Special, and Outstanding Writing for a Nonfiction Program. The digital series “Anthony Bourdain: Explore Parts Unknown” also received a nomination, giving voters seven shots at honoring the late chef and host.
But the death of a star doesn’t necessarily guarantee a posthumous Emmy. Just last year, it was thought Carrie Fisher might land the Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Emmy for her role on “Catastrophe,” but instead it went to Melissa McCarthy.
“Parts Unknown” won the Outstanding Informational Series or Special Emmy four years in a row, from 2013 to 2016, so the CNN series has a track record in the category. But voters may also choose to honor Bourdain in the writing category, and give the series award to another program.

The 2018 Emmy talk, sketch and unscripted categories could look a lot similar to last year. Categories like the reality races remain mostly unchanged, while the Variety/Talk competition has just one notable switch: “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah,” replacing “Real Time with Bill Maher.”
Incumbents such as RuPaul (as best reality host), “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” (variety/talk series) and “Saturday Night Live” (variety/sketch series) are all expected to repeat their wins.
But there are a few potential changes on the horizon: Sadly, CNN’s “Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown” will likely win the Outstanding Informational Series Or Special category as a posthumous tribute to the show’s host.
Also, if the outstanding reality competition category is finally ready for a switch, “RuPaul’s Drag Race” seems like the likely contender.

Just over halfway through 2018, the TV binge-watchers here at IMDb have revealed their favorite shows of the year to date.
The second season of Donald Glover's FX comedy-drama, "Atlanta," proved a popular choice with many of the staff members at IMDb. Last month, the series was renewed for a third season, to premiere in 2019.
Other FX shows that made our staff picks included "American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace" and the final season of Cold War drama "The Americans."
The mend-bending return of HBO's "Westworld" ranked highly with the team at IMDb as the second season explored the consequences of the robot revolution that began in its first run.
The avid TV watchers here at IMDb also streamed the second season of another dystopian vision of the future in Hulu's "The Handmaid's Tale." In May, Hulu announced that the series had been renewed for a third season.
Comedies that have made us laugh this year include Bill Hader's new comedy crime drama "Barry," the fourth season of sitcom "Schitt's Creek," and the return of Netflix's "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt."
Other Netflix favorites included talk show "My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman," makeover reality show "Queer Eye," and documentary crime series "Wild Wild Country" and "Evil Genius: The True Story of America's Most Diabolical Bank Heist."
Animated series that made our staff picks included "How To Train Your Dragon" spin-off "Dragons: Race to the Edge," "Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia," and the final season of "Star Wars Rebels."
British dating reality show "Love Island" also proved popular with some IMDb staff in the UK.

Gone are the days when HBO, PBS and Showtime ruled the documentary marketplace. Netflix and Amazon — as well as the recent emergence of digital distributors including Apple, Facebook, Hulu and YouTube Red — have changed the face of the docu genre: There is a newfound excitement around unscripted projects. But with the rapid nonfiction platform expansion has come a strong demand for content — and not just any old content. Content that taps into the cultural zeitgeist. Content that tackles the latest headlines. Content that audiences want to better understand. Or at least try and understand.
Major players in the docs field such as Netflix, as well as unlikely networks like E!, are clamoring for topical documentaries about issues including the Trump presidency and movements like Black Lives Matter, #MeToo and Never Again.
“Clearly people are consumed with these stories, and many top-tier broadcaster networks are looking to capitalize on that,” says Justin Wilkes,...

While streaming services have offered subscribers access to documentaries and unscripted series for some time, it’s only fairly recently that streamers have been making original unscripted and docuseries, such as Amazon’s “The Grand Tour” and Netflix’s “Wild Wild Country,” “Chef’s Table” and “Fastest Car.”
But it was less than 18 months ago when Netflix launched an initiative to make more of its own original unscripted shows, resulting in hits including “Queer Eye,” “My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman” and “Nailed It.” In May, Netflix signed a multi-year deal with Higher Ground Prods. — a company formed by former President Barack Obama and wife Michelle — that will include unscripted and docuseries and scripted content.
“We have, what, 125 million accounts with Netflix, and that sort of equates closer to 300 million active sets of eyeballs when you think about multi-user households,” says Lisa Nishimura, Netflix’s VP of original documentary and comedy programming.

David Letterman will be a guest on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” on NBC May 23, returning to the show he hosted from 1982 through mid-1993.
Letterman hosted late-night television talk shows for 33 years, beginning with “Late Night with David Letterman” on NBC in 1982. That show debuted in 1993 and ran until May 2015. Stephen Colbert took over after Letterman’s departure.

David Letterman’s new Netflix series, “My Next Guest Needs No Introduction,” has proven to be a format well-suited to bringing out candid self-reflection in his long-form interview subjects — which came to the forefront in his latest sit-down with Tina Fey.
In between a trip to Chicago for music and local cuisine, Fey and Letterman had a revelatory conversation about her family life and her love of comedy — including Letterman himself introducing the topic of women in comedy.
However, he opened by acknowledging the fact that for years, former “Late Night” writer Nell Scovell and many others have criticized the lack of women in his writers’ rooms. “[People would ask] why don’t you have women writers? And the best I could come up with was ‘I don’t know.’ I didn’t know why there weren’t women writers. There was no policy against women writers. I always thought, ‘Well, geez, if...

Netflix has picked up “Love Island” for the U.K. and will have seasons one and two of the breakout reality TV hit on its British service. The first two seasons hit Netflix on May 1.
The streamer has been bulking up its unscripted lineup and has acquired a free-tv ratings winner in “Love Island.” The series went out on ITV2 in the U.K. and the finale won the channel’s biggest-ever audience, and hooked a large number of the sought-after 16-to-24 demo. A new season launches this summer. ITV Studios created the format and produces the show with Motion Content Group.
The show has contestants living in a villa in Majorca and pairing off for love, and a shot at a cash prize. The couples change during the series, and contestants not popular with the public are eliminated.
ITV Studios Global Entertainment sells the finished show and the format and struck the Netflix deal.
