"I want to be the biggest reggaeton star in the world." Netflix has revealed the teaser trailer for the series Neon, about musicians in Miami. From exec producer, Daddy Yankee, and with original songs produced by Tainy, Neon is a new series about three friends' quest to find fame in the world of reggaeton. Or at least play one paying gig. It's set to debut on Netflix starting in October. While this isn't the first film or TV show featuring reggaeton, this is definitely one of the first to focus specifically on this scene and this music. Three friends move from a small town in Florida with the hope of making it big in Miami. Starring Tyler Dean Flores as Santi, Emma Ferreira as Ness, Jordan Mendoza as Felix, Courtney Taylor as Mia, along with Michelle Cortés, Jessie Camacho, Ana Sofia Pomales, and Cecille Colón. Looks really upbeat and lively...

September will reflect the collective impact of the actors and writers’ strikes: Few stars at film festivals, a handful of titles removed from presentation, and the ongoing lack of actors’ pre-release publicity.
One thing that September does have going for it: Theaters won’t suffer from the removal of wide-release films. (That changes starting in October.) There was Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers” (MGM), originally the opening-night title for the Venice Film Festival, but the tennis-world love triangle starring Zendaya was expected to be more of a niche success.
For now, we can expect to see continued improvement over last year, thanks to sequel and franchise titles, starting with “The Equalizer 3” (Sony) this weekend. The Denzel Washington actioner might exceed $30 million for the four-day weekend. “The Nun 2” (Warner Bros.) should equal that.
August will end up somewhat over $800 million, about a 70 percent improvement over 2022. Combined with the massive late-July boost from “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,...

“I can’t believe she’s here!” an industry audience member whispered to his neighbor at the Telluride Film Festival’s Chuck Jones Theater Thursday evening, when Julia Louis-Dreyfus stepped up to the podium. Louis-Dreyfus was the first actor at Telluride to take advantage of one of the Screen Actors Guild’s interim agreements, which allows her to promote her A24 film, Tuesday.
Louis-Dreyfus, who has been a regular on the picket lines during the strike, was clearly prepared to explain herself to the crowd at the Chuck Jones, almost all of whom had assumed they were coming to a star-free premiere of a tiny film from a little known first-time director, Daina O. Pusic.
“As a proud member of the Screen Actors Guild for the last 41 years, I stand here in solidarity with my union and the WGA,” Louis-Dreyfus said. “I want to thank my union for the battle...

Picking three Traits is the final part of Starfield‘s character creation process. The truth is that Traits in Starfield can be your best friend or your worst nightmare. Few are obviously helpful, and many of them are more confusing at the outset than they were perhaps intended to be. However, some Traits are ultimately significantly better than others.
Before we get into that topic, though, please note that I’m going to break this article down into multiple sections that compare comparable Traits that you can only select one of (from each category) as well as general Traits that have fewer selection restrictions. Ultimately, I’ll recommend the best overall Traits you can select in the game.
Spaced or Terra Firma?
Terra Firma – You’ve never acclimated to space. Health and oxygen are increased when on the surface, but decreased when you’re in space.
Spaced – Your body has become acclimated to space.

The Star Trek: Lower Decks crew can’t contain their excitement in the latest trailer for Season 4, and for good reason: They get to do something on Voyager!
In the upcoming episodes, “an unknown force is destroying starships and threatening galactic peace,” reads the official synopsis. “Luckily, the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos isn’t important enough for stuff like that! Instead, Ensigns Mariner, Boimler, Tendi, Rutherford and Provisional Ensign T’Lyn are keeping up with their Starfleet duties, avoiding malevolent computers and getting stuck in a couple caves — all while encountering new and classic aliens along the way.

Netflix’s new comedy “Neon,” which executive produced by Daddy Yankee, is bringing all the heat this fall.
In the teaser for “Neon,” which is set for an Oct. 19 launch, three friends from a small town in Florida make their way to Miami as rising reggaeton artist Santi (Tyler Dean Flores) attempts to climb his way to the top of the music industry with the help of his friends Ness (Emma Ferreira), Felix (Jordan Mendoza), and A&r rep Mia (Courtney Taylor).
“Picture it: you are a star,” Ness tells Santi, who dreams of becoming “the biggest reggaeton star in the world” in the teaser. “We have to show them that we’re not just some loser wanna-bees.”

One of the primary charms of the small but mighty Telluride Film Festival has always been its chance meetings. Sharing a gondola ride with an auteur. Trading theater line gossip with an exec. Reaching for the same hat at that shop on Colorado Ave. as an Oscar winner (it looks better on her, obviously).
But this year, thanks to Hollywood’s dual strikes, Telluride arrives with a high potential for awkwardness. And that’s because everybody in the business … kind of hates each other right now. At least judging by social media, picket-line signs and dueling press statements.
Telluride kicks off its 50th annual festival on Thursday in the Rockies, with an extra day of programming ending Monday and a slate of Oscar hopefuls including the first public screenings of films like Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers (Focus Features), Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn (Amazon) and George C. This year’s Telluride Film Festival will be missing its beloved co-founder, Tom Luddy, who died this year. Thus, the 2023 festival is dedicated to Luddy (1943-2023), as well as co-founders Bill Pence (1940-2022), James Card (1915-2000), and Stella Pence. Executive Director Julie Huntsinger, whose role expanded in the years since she joined the festival as managing director in 2007, is running the show solo for the first time.
Per usual, the 50th anniversary Tff edition covers a range of over eighty feature films, new features, shorts, and classic programs representing twenty-nine countries, along with filmmaker tributes, conversations, seminars, and student programs. Huntsinger is carrying on the Luddy legacy while at the same time showcasing her own taste. “Tom was a fearless leader until the bitter end,” said Huntsinger on the phone during a recent interview with IndieWire. “I miss him so much. Neon has released the first look at its fiery Michael Mann racing drama Ferrari, starring Adam Driver, Penélope Cruz and Shailene Woodley.
Based on Brock Yates’ book Enzo Ferrari: The Man, The Cars, The Races, The Machine, the anticipated film (which has landed on THR chief film critic David Rooney’s Top 10 list) follows Ferrari during the summer of 1957, as the ex-Formula 1 racer who built his own factory and established the Ferrari brand.
But in the nearly one-and-a-half minute sneak peek, which arrived just a day before the film is set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival, the legacy Ferrari built is in crisis. Bankruptcy threatens his business, which he built with his wife, Laura (Cruz), 10 years before. In his personal life, Ferrari struggles to handle the death of their son, Dino, amid a worsening marriage, and to acknowledge his other son, Piero, with mistress Lina Lardi.

If a husband is found dead at the base of a mountain in the woods, does that automatically mean his wife pushed him?
In Justine Triet’s Palme d’Or-winning “Anatomy of a Fall,” “Toni Erdmann” star Sandra Hüller takes a turn, playing a chilly bisexual novelist who is accused of offing her spouse. Added twist: he’s been killed in the very same manner she previously described in one of her murder mystery books. Director Triet co-wrote the script with her real-life spouse, Arthur Harari, the filmmaker behind “Onoda: 10,000 Nights in the Jungle.”
“Anatomy of a Fall” debuted at Cannes earlier this year, where the film won the festival’s top prize, making Triet only the third woman to win the Palme d’Or. The feature is continuing to make its rounds on the the festival circuit with upcoming screenings at TIFF and NYFF, and the film will hit theaters later this fall.

American horror films featuring demons generally have a Christian bent, so a Hindu spin on this subgenre is enticing for its potential to breathe new life into well-trodden terrain. But while Bishal Dutta’s It Lives Inside follows through on its promise of representation in terms of its cast full of Indian and Indian American actors, the film’s attempts at actual cultural specificity are about as nuanced as a “very special episode” of a Disney sitcom.
It Lives Inside offers a brief peek at Hindu religious festivities inside Samidha’s (Megan Suri) house, and Sam’s loving mother, Poorna (Neeru Bajwa), primarily speaks to her daughter in Hindi. One gets a sense that the girl’s feelings of shame are tied to her sense of otherness (she’s one of only two Indian Americans at her high school), but otherwise there’s little to distinguish Sam from the disaffected...

SAG-AFTRA on Thursday named Neon’s Michael Mann-directed Ferrari as one of its latest recipients of an interim agreement for publicity.
The waiver allows the movie’s cast, which includes Adam Driver and Penélope Cruz, to publicize the feature at its Venice Film Festival world premiere, closing night at the New York Film Festival and other events at which the pic may screen.
Similar to indie studio A24, Neon is a non-amptp company and has encountered no hurdles in nabbing SAG-AFTRA interim agreements.
There are several applications of SAG-AFTRA interim agreements for indie features, addressing everything from casting to production and promotion.
Ferrari is not the first major title to benefit in the latter area, joining a list that includes Luc Besson’s DogMan and Lily Gladstone-led The Unknown Country. But it’s certainly the starriest with the option to promote at the moment, boasting an ensemble cast that also includes Shailene Woodley,...

Director-writer-editor Brett Morgen’s David Bowie documentary Moonage Daydream is certainly unlike any musician-centered film you’ve seen before. The movie plays out almost as if the viewer is watching through a kaleidoscope, a fever dream of footage and soundscapes from the Bowie archives as well as from films and artworks the artist referenced in his storied career. Nominated for four Emmys this year (directing, writing, editing and sound editing), the director sat down with THR to discuss how he arrived on Bowie as a subject and his artistic process.
What draws you to a documentary subject at the outset?
As I reflect back over the years, I’m definitely drawn toward wildly creative people who live life on their own terms. That seems to be the one consistent link between Robert Evans, Jane Goodall, Kurt Cobain and David Bowie. On a more superficial level, when I’m approaching a subject,...

Existential crisis created the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, which in turn created another: What is a major fall festival premiere worth without its stars?

The Hollywood Critics Association has presented its midseason awards for the sixth time since 2018, giving Best Picture and Director to “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.” The big winner a year ago was eventual Oscar juggernaut “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” Does that make them a new Oscar bellwether? Probably not, considering just how unique a phenomenon that movie proved to be. However, if this boost to “Spider-Verse’s” fledgling campaign results in the critically acclaimed animated film actually contending for the academy’s top award, studios may begin treating the Hca Midyears like a stop along the road to the Oscars and elevate their importance. And if it doesn’t, we may still see more overlap in the future if Oscar showings by spring releases “Eeaao,” “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Elvis” discourage winter backloading.

In early summer, the still-slim Oscar conversation around documentary contenders got an unexpected bump: from an Emmy contender.
When the team behind AppleTV+’s “Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie” realized that the field of Oscar contenders was thinner than usual, the Davis Guggenheim-directed doc entered the fray. Right now, the film about the hugely popular TV and film star fighting off the vicissitudes of Parkinson’s and reflecting on his past looks good not only for an Emmy nomination, but Oscar rules make it possible to double dip and also pick up an Oscar nod.
But it doesn’t work the other way. Only if a movie does not land an Oscar nomination can it then submit for the Emmy race, as Brett Morgen’s “Jane” did in 2017. But given the weak Oscar competition this year, “Still,” with superb reviews for its innovative filmmaking — which elevates it beyond...

A24’s “The Zone of Interest” is spoken in German, but was filmed in Poland and is written and directed by a British auteur. So what does that mean for its prospects for best international feature at the Oscars?
Written and directed by Jonathan Glazer, “The Zone of Interest” premiered last week at the Cannes Film Festival where it emerged as an early favorite for the coveted Palme d’Or after receiving widespread acclaim.
The film tells the story of a commandant of Auschwitz, Rudolf Höss (Christian Friedel), and his wife Hedwig (Sandra Hüller) who strive to build a dream life for their family in a house and garden next to the camp that was one of the sites where six million Jews were murdered.
In the past few years, it seems as if more non-English language features are being submitted that aren’t spoken in the country’s native tongue.

Anatomy of a Fall, written and directed by French filmmaker Justine Triet (Sibyl) and co-written by Arthur Harari (Onoda: 10,000 Nights in the Jungle), marks Neon’s second acquisition at the festival following Pablo Berger’s animated Robot Dreams.

Anatomy of a Fall is a thriller that follows Sandra (Sandra Hüller), a German writer, her French husband, Samuel, and their 11-year-old son, Daniel, who live a secluded life in a remote town in the French Alps. For its first-ever upfronts presentation, Netflix took a page out of broadcast networks’ traditional playbook and boasted about not just what series it has launching in the coming months, or even through the end of the year, but specifically calling out its fall 2023 slate.
A staple of upfronts week — though not as much lately, first because of the Covid-19 pandemic and now because of the writers strike — has been the unveiling of ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox’s fall lineups. This was done so advertisers knew what they were buying ads against and therefore what demos and audience size it would be most likely to reach by promoting products during those programs.
For Netflix, which doesn’t follow the September-to-May season that broadcast still lives by but now has an ad-supported tier it needs to supply with commercials, to take this approach is potentially a move for the streamer to...

Rebecca (Margaret Qualley) is here for legal counsel. But her questions for Hal Porterfield (Christopher Abbott) are getting inappropriate, and fast. She wants to know about the frequency of his masturbation, how much he drinks, if he’s capable of taking on the herculean task of running his father’s massive hotel monopoly. And Hal is getting annoyed. After all, this isn’t the script that he had written for Rebecca to perform.
Rebecca isn’t a lawyer, nor an actress. Not really. She’s a hired dominatrix in a no-contact sexual relationship with Hal, who really is set to step in as CEO of his recently passed father’s company, and who really does write extensive scripts to support his unusual sexual proclivities.

Neon has released an official trailer for Oldboy, the iconic cult classic Korean thriller made by Park Chan-wook. This originally opened in Korea in 2003, then premiered at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival. It took a few years to become a cult classic in the US, playing at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival before opening in limited theaters. Neon has re-acquired the film and is giving it a proper restored and remastered re-release this August in theaters nationwide - to celebrate its 20th anniversary. If you have never seen it, you Must go. It's pretty much a rite of passage for any and every cinephile. After being kidnapped and imprisoned for fifteen years in a room, Oh Dae-su is released, only to find that he must find his captor in five days. Why did they do this to him? Once you know, you know. There’s George Foreman the boxer and George Foreman the grill. The Sony biopic out this Friday offers a different George. “I want to spread the word of God,” says Foreman (Khris Davis) in the trailer for “Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World.”
It’s a production from faith-based Sony Pictures’ label Affirm Films. Its first film in 2008, “Fireproof” starring Kirk Cameron, grossed $33 million on a $500,000 budget. To date, the (mostly domestic) global theatrical gross for Affirm titles stands at $520 million — $400 million more than the films’ total production costs.
Directed by George Tillman Jr. and with Oscar-winner Forest Whitaker in a supporting role, “Foreman” may represent the biggest Affirm budget to date. (One source lists it at $34 million.) Prior Affirm budgets topped out at $20 million. It’s also got one of Affirm’s biggest releases, with 2,575 theaters.
Opening prospects are unclear.

The last few cycles of Oscar season provided a jolt to the kind of filmmaking made on the margins of Hollywood, or outside of its boundaries altogether. If a Korean-language social thriller (“Parasite”), a poetic road-trip movie mostly populated by non-actors (“Nomadland”), and a zany comedy about an estranged Asian American (you know the one) can all win Best Picture, prior assumptions about movies with limited appeal have no foundation in reality.

Oscar-nomination afterglow for this year’s Best Picture contenders was largely felt more in the home than it was at the box office, with a majority of titles already available to be viewed on the couch except for 20th Century Studios/Disney’s 3D title Avatar: The Way of Water.

Franchise fatigue was so last week. “Creed III” (MGM) will end up around 50 percent better than pre-weekend projection with nearly $59 million.
The ninth “Rocky” franchise film and the first without Sylvester Stallone, it’s the third in the Adonis Creed reboot and the first directed by triple-hyphenate Michael B. Jordan. It begins a critical March that will see three other sequels with strong potential debuts. If 2023 is to improve to the minimum goal of $9 billion U.S./Canada gross (still far behind pre-Covid totals), franchise titles must lead the way. “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” (Disney) fell below expectations, but the new “Creed” suggests that theaters can thrive beyond Marvel.
Comparisons to the first two “Creed” entries are tricky: Both opened on pre-opening Thanksgiving Wednesdays, making weekend analysis suspect even before noting that ticket prices are now considerably higher. But any threequel that posts this strong a number is impressive.
