Christian gospel star Mandisa was honored on Monday’s episode of American Idol with a special performance by former contestants Colton Dixon, Danny Gokey, and Melinda Doolittle.
The trio, all dressed in white, sang Mary Mary’s 2000 hit “Shackles (Praise You)” in remembrance of the beloved singer. “I’ve known her for over 20 years,” Doolittle said following the tribute. “We started off singing background and sessions together and then she got on Idol and I cheered for her. After its record-shattering Labor Day weekend debut, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is set to rule the box office in its second weekend. The latest Marvel superhero movie has exceeded expectations, and there was a collective sigh of relief for the industry after over a month of disappointing box office returns. With confirmation that a blockbuster is still possible in the current environment, as well as the appearance that the current Covid-19 wave may be turning around, the future of the box office is finally looking brighter, even though the month of September is light on major releases. It has certainly given Sony some confidence, as they have moved forward the release date of Venom: Let There Be Carnage by two weeks to October 1.

Joining films like “Overcomer” and “God’s Not Dead” in a class of pictures notable for their goodwill and poor filmmaking, ‘Believe’ chronicles the real-life story of Jeremy Camp. From the start of his days in college to the end of a relationship, filmmakers, the Erwin Brothers, have made it their mission to take this Grammy-nominated musician and make him a symbol of faith at a crossroads—his girlfriend is sick and only God can help.

The animated adventure Abominable from Universal finished on top of the box-office weekend with a $20.9 million showing during its opening weekend. This bested second-place finisher (and last week’s top earner) Downton Abbey by approximately $6.4 million. Still, Abominable has a long way to go to justify its $75 million budget, but positive reviews and word of mouth could help it along in that regard.
The aforementioned Downton Abbey did make $14.5 million during its second weekend, giving the theatrical edition of the popular television show a two-week total of $58.5 million. Director Loren Scarfaria’s Hustlers moved up two spots to finish in third place this weekend with an $11.5 million haul in its third week of release, giving the comedy a cumulative total of $80.6 million.
Meanwhile, It Chapter Two held steady in the fourth spot of the top ten with $10.4 million, giving it a four-week total of $193.9 million. Ad Astra did not prove...

Warner Bros. and New Line's It: Chapter Two kicked off the fall box office season with a strong, $91 million debut. The performance easily topped the weekend box office, finishing ahead of the second place film by $85 million. While the performance trails the first film's $123 million opening back in 2017, it is still within studio expectations and ranks as the second largest horror opening of all-time while 2017's It remains to be the only horror film to ever open with more than $100 million. It: Chapter Two and its predecessor now rank as the first and second largest openings for both a horror film as well as the first and second largest September openings of all-time. Interestingly enough, one reason Chapter Two may have fallen short of its predecessor would appear to be the film's inability to attract a female audience similar to the first film and most horror films nowadays, which tend to be majority female,...

Leave it to Pennywise to deliver a much-needed jolt to the domestic box office. Warner Bros. and New Line’s “It: Chapter Two” arrived with $91 million, a promising start to fall after a lackluster summer moviegoing season.
While those ticket sales are behind the jaw-dropping $123 million launch of its predecessor, 2017’s “It,” the follow-up still ranks as the second-best horror opening in history, as well as the second-highest bow for the month of September (both behind “It”). The original “It” stands as the most successful horror film to date with $700 million worldwide.
Directed by Andy Muschietti, “It: Chapter Two” was also a necessary win for Warner Bros. following a dismal summer that saw disappointments such as “The Kitchen,” “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” and “Shaft.”
Overseas, “It: Chapter Two” scared up a solid $94 million for a global debut of $185 million.
“We’re absolutely thrilled with our result,” Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros.

Warner Bros./New Line’s “It: Chapter Two” has got the box office moving again after a sluggish couple of weeks. With the widest release ever for a horror film at 4,570 screens, this Stephen King adaptation earned a $91 million opening this weekend.
While that’s well below the horror record $123 million earned by the first “It” in 2017, “It: Chapter Two” does stand as the second-highest opening weekend in the history of the genre. That honor previously belonged to the 2018 revival of “Halloween,” which earned a $76 million opening in October 2018.

Gerard Butler’s “Angel Has Fallen” easily topped the Labor Day holiday weekend with $14.8 million at 3,336 locations in North America, for an 11-day total of nearly $44 million.
The Lionsgate-Millennium title, the third entry in the action franchise, stars Butler as a Secret Service Agent trying to clear his name after being framed for an attack on the U.S. President, played by Morgan Freeman. “Angel Has Fallen,” which took in $21 million in its opening weekend, could wind up matching the $62 million taken in by 2016’s “London Has Fallen” but will probably fall short of the $98 million domestic total for 2013’s “Olympus Has Fallen.”
It’s a typical performance for a Labor Day weekend with studios avoiding the roll out of major titles and relying on holdovers. The third weekend of “Crazy Rich Asians” led last year’s holiday weekend with $28.6 million. In 2017, the third weekend of “The Hitman’s...

Lionsgate and Millennium’s “Angel Has Fallen” ruled the box office during an expectedly quiet Labor Day weekend. The third entry in the action franchise generated $11.5 million over the weekend and should close out the holiday with $14.4 million.
Without any new nationwide offerings from a major Hollywood studio, those ticket sales were enough to maintain first place on domestic box office charts. After two weekends in theaters, the Gerard Butler-led “Angel Has Fallen” has earned $43.6 million.
With Labor Day comes the close of summer. The four month stretch between May and August had its share of hits, but overall, popcorn season receipts only came in at $4.3 billion, a 2% decline from last year. That pushed the year-to-date box office down 6.3%, according to Comscore.
Blumhouse Tilt and Otl took on the last weekend of summer with “Don’t Let Go.” However, the supernatural thriller couldn’t crack the top 10 and debuted at No.

Between the usual end-of-summer slowdown and the arrival of “It: Chapter Two” next week, there were no new wide releases in movie theaters for this Labor Day weekend, leaving an opening for Lionsgate/Millennium’s “Angel Has Fallen” to top the domestic charts for another week with an estimated $11.5 million 3-day second weekend.
By comparison, that’s slightly higher than the $10.9 million earned in the second weekend of “London Has Fallen” in 2016 and is a 46% drop from the $21.3 million opening earned by “Angel” last weekend. Through Labor Day, the film is projected to earn a $14.5 million extended weekend total to bring its domestic run to $43.5 million.

3Rd Update/Writethru Sunday Am: After Friday posts Those distributors complaining that they can’t find a release date on the calendar can just shush.
Why? Because you didn’t book any wide releases over Labor Day weekend! Distribution often preaches that movies are a 52-weekend business per year, and for the second time since 2017, the Labor Day stretch is an exception to that rule.
The truth of the matter is that we’re in this situation because no one wanted to play into New Line’s It: Chapter Two next weekend. Why? Because you didn’t book any wide releases over Labor Day weekend! Distribution often preaches that movies are a 52-weekend business per year, and for the second time since 2017, the Labor Day stretch is an exception to that rule.

“Angel Has Fallen” continues to fly at the box office. The Lionsgate and Millennium film is heading for a $14 million Labor Day weekend, following $2.8 million in Friday’s domestic ticket sales.
While slightly below earlier predictions, that should push the film’s total domestic gross to around $43 million come Monday. “Angel Has Fallen” beat expectations when it debuted to $21.25 million last weekend — on par with its predecessors, 2016’s “London Has Fallen” and 2013’s “Olympus Has Fallen.” Gerard Butler stars in the action franchise as a Secret Service agent who must prove his innocence after being framed for an attack on the United States president (Morgan Freeman).
Universal’s “Good Boys” also showed some staying power in its third weekend, earning $2.3 million on Friday for an estimated $11.4 million Labor Day Weekend. If estimates hold, the R-rated comedy should lift its 18-day total to about $57 million. Disney’s “The Lion King,” Universal...

Gerard Butler and Morgan Freeman are showing staying power at the North American box office as “Angel Has Fallen” heads for a passable $15 million Labor Day holiday weekend, late afternoon estimates showed Friday.
The third entry in Lionsgate-Millennium’s action franchise will finish the frame with about $44 million in its first 11 days. Butler stars as a Secret Service Agent trying to clear his name after being framed for an attack on the U.S. President, played by Freeman.
“Angel Has Fallen,” which took in $21 million in its opening weekend, will easily top the third weekend of Universal’s R-rated comedy “Good Boys” during the four-day frame. “Good Boys” should take in around $10 million, lifting its 18-day total to about $57 million.
Disney’s seventh weekend of its photorealistic remake of “The Lion King” and Sony’s second weekend of faith-based drama “Overcomer” will battle for third place with about $8 million each.

Supernatural thriller “Don’t Let Go” has scared up $150,000 at 922 North American locations in Thursday night preview showings.
“Don’t Let Go” is expected to earn between $3 million and $5 million during what should be a typically mild Labor Day weekend at the nation’s multiplexes with the second session for “Angel Has Fallen” likely to repeat as the winner.
“Don’t Let Go,” which premiered at Sundance under the title “Relive,” stars David Oyelowo as a detective working to solve a murder after he receives a phone call from his dead niece, played by Storm Reid. It was produced by Jason Blum and directed by Jacob Aaron Estes, with Blumhouse Tilt and Otl Releasing handling distribution. Reviews have been mixed with a 47% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. “Don’t Let Go” has a modest $5 million production budget.
Also opening this weekend is Forrest Film’s drama “Bennett’s War” at around 800 venues amid similarly modest expectations.

As the summer movie season comes to a close, we're looking at what is likely to be the second worst weekend of the year so far. There are no major new wide releases, though there are a couple of moderate debuts in Don't Let Go and Bennett's War, yet both are likely to fall outside the top ten. That said, the landscape should be nicely cleared out for what should be a strong opening next week for Warner Bros. and New Line's It: Chapter Two as the fall movie season hopes to get off to a strong start. Expected to repeat atop the weekend box office is Lionsgate and Millennium's Angel has Fallen. The film's $21.3 million opening was less than $300k shy of the opening for London Has Fallen, but the film has managed to outperform London over the past three days since its debut. However, we can't really...

‘The Australian Dream.’
The racist slurs which ended the football career of Sydney Swans star Adam Goodes dominated the national conversation for weeks in the lead-up to the premieres of Ian Darling’s The Final Quarter and Daniel Gordon’s The Australian Dream.
So how to explain the fact that Gordon’s acclaimed film ranked at No. 12 in Australian cinemas last weekend after winning the Miff Audience Award for Best Documentary Feature and earning a nomination for an Aacta Award?
Some 640,000 people watched The Final Quarter on Network 10 after its Sydney Film Festival premiere in June. That plus the copious publicity for both docs and the issues of race, identity and belonging may well have prompted some people to think: “I know the story, so I don’t need to see The Australian Dream.”

The weekend showed an unexpected uptick with three new films, led by $21 million for the Gerard Butler sequel “Angel Has Fallen.” It’s a positive sign, although not without mixed messages: The other two openers are low-budget originals with Sony’s faith-based “Overcomer” and the Fox Searchlight horror film “Ready or Not,” which grossed a total of not quite $19 million. The reinforces what’s already known: Given a choice, audience usually prefer the familiar.
With Butler reprising his role as a Secret Service agent extraordinaire, “Angel” follows the blueprint of “Olympus Has Fallen” in 2013 and “London Has Fallen” in 2016. The first was a sleeper, reaching close to $109 million adjusted. The third time around surprisingly opened to the same as “London,” and on a weaker date (the first two were March openings). It’s the first in this franchise for Lionsgate; the prior were the now-defunct FilmDistrict and then Focus.

Welcome back one and all to the weekly box office report! As is always the case, each and every single Sunday you can expect a look at what made the most money in theaters, as well as just how all of the new releases fared. This week, the action sequel Angel Has Fallen hopes to blast its way to the top of the list. Joining the fray as well we have the faith based offering Overcomer, as well as Ready or Not, plus a wide expansion for The Peanut Butter Falcon. How did all of the films in question do? Let us take a look right now at just that… Taking the top spot this week was the action franchise offering Angel Has Fallen, exceeding expectations and nearly matching the opening for the prior installment, London Has Fallen. That one began with $21.6 million, though this series capper came up just shy with $21.2 million.

Lionsgate/Millennium’s “Angel Has Fallen” has joined “Good Boys” and “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark” in the recent series of August films that have earned modest but better-than-expected opening weekends. The third film in Gerard Butler’s “Fallen” series has earned $21.2 million from 3,286 screens, nearly matching the $21.6 million opening earned by “London Has Fallen” in March 2016.

Lionsgate and Millennium's Angel Has Fallen outperformed expectations with a strong #1 debut, nearly matching its predecessor and giving Lionsgate its second #1 film of the year after John Wick 3. Also over-performing was Sony and Affirm's Overcomer while Universal's Hobbs & Shaw debuted in China with the largest August opening ever in the market. With an estimated $21.25 million, Lionsgate and Millennium's Angel Has Fallen topped the weekend box office, delivering a debut just shy of the $21.6 million opening for the previous installment in the Fallen franchise, London Has Fallen. To that point, while the film's opening weekend is the smallest in the franchise, it is the first to debut at #1 after both of the previous installments landed in the runner-up position, opening against major animated titles over their respective weekends. Angel had no such competition, debuting in the latter portion of August where box office performances are typically lighter. Looking ahead,...

“Angel Has Fallen,” the third chapter in Lionsgate and Millenium’s action franchise starring Gerard Butler, had a stronger opening weekend than expected, collecting $21.25 million during its first three days of release.
Those ticket sales were enough to top domestic box office charts, bumping last weekend’s champ, Universal’s comedy “Good Boys,” to second place. Starring Jacob Tremblay, “Good Boys” generated $11.75 million in its sophomore outing, boosting its domestic total to $41.4 million.
“Angel Has Fallen” nearly matched the $21.6 million debut of its predecessor, 2016’s “London Has Fallen.” The first film, 2013’s “Olympus Has Fallen,” kicked off with $30.4 million.
“We wanted to give enough distance from the big summer tentpole films,” Lionsgate’s president of domestic distribution David Spitz said of the movie’s late August release. “We had the opportunity, and the movie really delivered.”

Lionsgate and Millennium’s “Angel Has Fallen” is performing above expectations, taking in $7.9 million in Friday’s domestic ticket sales as it heads to a projected $20 million opening weekend.
Early estimates originally placed the third installment of the “Fallen” series within the $12 million to $16 million range, but a solid 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and some strong star power from leads Morgan Freeman and Gerard Butler appear to be bolstering its box office appearance.
Previous iterations within the franchise performed similarly, with 2016’s “London Has Fallen” opening to $21.6 million and 2013’s “Olympus Has Fallen” nabbing a higher $30 million.
Directed by Ric Roman Waugh, “Angel Has Fallen” follows secret service agent Mike Banning (Butler) who is falsely accused of an assassination attempt on U.S. President Allan Trumbull (Freeman). Also starring are Jada Pinkett Smith, Tim Blake Nelson, Piper Perabo and Nick Nolte.

Gerard Butler and Morgan Freeman are leading the way at the North American box office with “Angel Has Fallen” on its way to about $20 million, early estimates showed Friday.
Should forecasts hold, “Angel Has Fallen” will take in about double the next title, Universal’s second weekend of raunchy comedy “Good Boys” with about $10 million. “Good Boys,” which appears to have broken the recent comedy slump at multiplexes, will wind up the weekend with more than $40 million in its first 10 days.
A quartet of titles will be battling for third place in the $7 million to $9 million range with the opening of Sony-Affirm’s faith-based “Overcomer” as the early leader, followed by Disney’s sixth weekend of “The Lion King” as it heads to $510 million, Universal’s fourth frame of “Hobbs & Shaw” and Fox Searchlight’s launch of horror-comedy “Ready or Not.”

Calling a faith-based release “preachy” could seem redundant, since these productions are designed as vehicles to evangelize. However, even within its spiritual niche, Alex Kendrick’s “Overcomer” shocks for being even more oppressively loquacious than some of its many big-screen cousins.
If every line of stale dialogue landed like a hammer to the head, audiences would walk out victims of blunt-force trauma.
Kendrick, who co-wrote this with brother and perennial collaborator Stephen Kendrick, directs himself as John Harrison, a beloved basketball coach and history teacher at a Christian high school in small-town America. Life’s idyllic until his self-image crumbles after the local plant closes, forcing thousands of blue-collar workers to move elsewhere with their families. Lacking players, John is reassigned to coach the cross-country team, composed of one athlete with asthma: orphaned African American teen Hannah Scott (newcomer Aryn Wright-Thompson).

“Angel Has Fallen,” the action sequel starring Gerard Butler and Morgan Freeman, earned $1.5 million at the box office Thursday from preview screenings at 2,600 locations. It opens on 3,286 screens this weekend.
Lionsgate is releasing “Angel Has Fallen” following up from the success of both “Olympus Has Fallen” in 2013 and “London Has Fallen” in 2016. It’s the widest release this weekend as the summer comes to a close, with Fox Searchlight’s horror and thriller “Ready or Not” having already opened on Wednesday.
The studio is projecting “Angel” to open in the low to mid teen range this weekend, with independent trackers estimating approximately $13 million. For a comparison, “London Has Fallen” earned only $850,000 in its debut opposite a then record-setting weekend for Disney’s “Zootopia,” but it ultimately raked in a $21.6 million opening. The original “Olympus Has Fallen” opened to $30.3 million and grossed $170.2 million worldwide.

No matter the setting or circumstances, the solution to every dilemma found in Christian Evangelical films is getting closer to God. That certainly holds true with regards to “Overcomer,” the latest bit of bigscreen proselytizing by writer-director-star Alex Kendrick. The story of a high school basketball coach who’s forced to take over a cross-country program with only one runner, it’s Its one-note sermonizing should help it appeal to its target audience, but those not already in the fold will likely be left unmoved.

Three more contenders are joining what has lately been a hostile box office arena. Can anyone emerge from August victorious?
Fox Searchlight’s “Ready or Not,” a black comedy about a diabolical game of hide-and-seek, will debut in 2,244 North American theaters on Wednesday. The low-budget film is expected to earn upwards of $6.5 million over the weekend and $8 million to $12 million during its first five days of release. Universal scored a strong performance this weekend from their new R-rated comedy Good Boys, which out performed expectations and took the top spot at the weekend box office. The studio also scored a second place finish with Hobbs & Shaw over a weekend that saw yet another five new wide releases hit theaters. However, outside of Good Boys, the weekend's four other newcomers mostly struggled over the weekend, which includes WB's Blinded by the Light narrowly finding its way into the top ten while Uar's Where'd You Go, Bernadette fell short. As the UK’s Brexit political thriller plays out in real time, IFC Films has set a release date for director Gavin Hood’s take on another one from 15 years ago. Official Secrets, the story of Iraq-invasion whistleblower Katharine Gun, will hit select theaters on August 23.
The film, which premiered at Sundance in January, stars Keira Knightley as Gun. Charged with breaking the Official Secrets Act in Britain, and facing imprisonment, she reaches out to Ben Emmerson (Ralph Fiennes), one of the top lawyers in the country, to take her case and defend her actions. With her life, freedom and marriage threatened, Gun risks everything by leaking a classified email to the press in the hope that this simple act could help halt an unjust war.
The pic also stars Matthew Goode, Adam Bakri and Matt Smith as journalist Martin Bright, who first publicly broke the news about the memo.
