- Burnham and the crew navigate a dangerous alien landscape in a race against time to save Tilly's life, but Stamets is not at all prepared for what they find in the process. Section 31 is assigned to help track down Spock, much to Pike's dismay.
- Stamets and Burnham conclude that Tilly has been taken into the Mycelial network. Stamets theorizes that the cocoon that the parasite spun around Tilly is an organic transporter. The same transported can be used to bring Tilly back.
Tilly wakes up in the Mycelial network with the May parasite, who wants her to help stop a "monster" ravaging their world. May says that she can't fail, else her entire species will die. The monster arrived when Stamets started using the network for space jumps. The monster destroys everything he touches. The creature uses a toxin which is lethal to all indigenous life forms. May promises to return Tilly to her world once the monster is dealt with.
Discovery finds the shuttle Spock used to escape the psychiatric unit only to discover Georgiou on-board. Georgiou says that section 31 is hunting for Spock who is wanted for multiple murders. Section 31 Captain Leland (Alan Van Sprang) assigns Tyler to Discovery as a liaison to ensure that Discovery does not interfere with Section 31's own investigation into Spock. Pike tries to explain that Spock is connected to the mysterious seven signals appearing all over the galaxy. They need Spock to unlock this mystery. Pike and Leland have no clue that Georgiou is a Terran emperor from a parallel Universe.
Tyler arrives on the Discovery and Pike does not trust him, since Tyler is also a murderer. Burnham convinces Pike that the murders were conducted by Voq and that Tyler is a good man. Pike assigns Nhan to keep an eye over Tyler.
Discovery conducts a half-jump into the Mycelial network to give Stamets and Burnham limited time to find Tilly before the network consumes the ship. The Mycelia will attack the ship as soon it enters and will try to decompose its materials, which is why Stamets and Burnham would need to be quick. Pike authorizes the plan as Tilly would also have sacrificed her life to save any member of the crew.
As the ship enter the Mycelial network, Tilly and May find it and enter the ship. They see that the JahSepp are already eating through the ship's hull and that the monster is also entering the ship. Burnham and Stamets meet Tilly and May inside the Discovery.
Burnham and Stamets discover the monster is Stamets' husband, Hugh Culber, the former Discovery Medical Officer who Tyler murdered during the war. Burnham informs Pike about Culber's presence on the ship. Burnham is convinced that Culber was a healer and would never harm a fellow living being. May is not so sure. Burnham speculates that Culber is not attacking the Mycelia, he is using the toxins to defend himself. Which means he is alive.
Meanwhile the JahSepp penetrate 78% of Discovery's exposed hull. Tyler calls section 31 for help and a ship appears out of thin air to help. The ship is captained by Leland, who uses his tractor beams to stabilize the Discovery. Georgiou's quick thinking on the section 31 ship helps buy a little more time for Discovery
Stamets finds Culber inside the ship and manages to convince him that he will not be hurt. Stamets was connected to the network when Culber died, allowing Culber's energy to be recreated by the spores. Burnham says that to Culber, May and the JahSepp are the monsters as the spores are attacking him and trying to consume him. But Culber cannot cross through the energy barrier on the spore drive chamber. He simply ceases to exist in the physical dimensions. He can only exist as an energy signature in the Mycelial dimension.
Burnham now convinces May to use the parasite cocoon on Discovery, through which Tilly was transported into the network, to rebuild Culber's body in normal space. They leave the network with Culber and Tilly.
Pike visits the Section 31 ship and finds Admiral Cornwell there. Cornwell says that the signals leave behind a trail of Tachyon radiation. This implies time travel or a by-product of cloaking devices. They know that only Spock has a connection to these signals. Cronwell asks Leland and Pike to work together to find Spock. Georgiou reaches out to Burnham and says that she wants to find Spock before Starfleet does. She asks Burnham to trust her.
