- Burnham goes to Vulcan in search of Spock, where she unearths surprising family secrets. In researching what is left of the Red Angel's signal over Kaminar, Pike and Tyler end up in battle with time itself. Georgiou has a few tricks up her sleeve for Leland and Section 31.
- Burnham takes permission from Pike to go to Vulcan to look for Spock. Burnham suspects that Amanda is hiding something.
Discovery stays on Kaminar to analyze the Tachyon particles from the Red Angel's movement around the planet. The particle density is 5000 particles per cubic meters, which is higher than a supernova. This technology has not been invented yet. Discovery is confronted by a time anomaly while researching the Red Angel's signal over Kaminar. The anomaly disrupts the ships sensors and so a probe cannot be launched into it from the ship.
Pike and Tyler investigate the anomaly in a shuttle-craft, sending a probe into it. The shuttle also disappears from Discovery's view. Saru takes command and brings Stamets to help. Stamets Tardigrade DNA protects him from the effects from temporal distortions and allows him to see non-linear time.
Meanwhile the shuttle is also inside the temporal rift. Tyler and Pike start to argue about what to do in the situation. Pike wants to release fuel from the shuttle and ignite it, so the Discovery can locate it. But Tyler says that they should conserve fuel and find a fixed point to navigate their way out of the anomaly before the rift closes.
That same probe soon returns through the anomaly having been upgraded with future technology. It attacks the shuttle, and secretly infects Airiam's augmentations using the shuttle's computer system. Meanwhile Stamets locates the shuttle inside the temporal anomaly by looking at the fuel burns. Stamets transports himself inside the shuttle to help them navigate out of the anomaly. Stamets manages to bring the shuttle out of the anomaly, but the probe is still accessing the ship's data core and accessing all knowledge. As the fuel runs out, the probe starts dragging the shuttle back into the anomaly.
Pike and Tyler destroy the probe with Stamets' help, as his exposure to the Mycelial network allows him to ignore the time discrepancies in the anomaly. Pike, Tyler and Stamets beam back on board the Discovery, as the probe is destroyed with the self-destruct of the shuttle. But not before the probe infects commander Airiam. Due to the attack from the probe, both Tyler and Pike believe that the Red Angel may not be as benevolent as it seems.
Meanwhile, Burnham visits Vulcan as she continues to search for Spock. Confronting Grayson, Burnham learns that their mother has been hiding Spock, who is in psychological distress and is repeating phrases and a series of numbers "841947" Amanda refuses to release Spock under Burnham's care, who had planned to take him to a hospital.
But then Sarek intervenes. Sarek finds that Amanda has been hiding Spock from him. He overrules Amanda. Amanda admonishes Sarek for making Spock pay the price, like always. Amanda says that Spock was never integrated and accepted by the Vulcan society as he was half human. Only Amandas love and attention allowed him to grow up without severe psychological issues. She taught Spock how to survive. Burnham learns that Spock suffered from L'Tak Terai as a child, a condition similar to dyslexia in humans.
Sarek instructs Burnham to trust Starfleet and take Spock to Section 31 to fix his mind. Sarek argues that by not doing this, Burnham would be in violation of Starfleet orders and could be arrested for the same. He is not prepared to lose both his children on the same day. Section 31's doctors claim that they can help him, but Georgiou warns her that Spock will not survive the memory extractor that Section 31 plans to use on him.
Georgiou helps Burnham stage an attack that allows Burnham and Spock to escape the ship. When Leland confronts Georgiou she counters by saying that she knows that Leland is responsible for the death of Burnham's parents.
Burnham figures out that the numbers being recited by Spock are in reverse and point to the coordinates of Talos IV.
