Series creators Raphael Bob-Waksberg and Kate Purdy came up with the initial idea for "Undone" based off another series they'd written in which the main character goes on a drug-induced trip and experiences an alternate reality. That core idea was then further shaped by Kate's own familial experiences with mental illness.
Hisko Hulsing, who directed the animation on the series, chose oil painting as the method to build the world of "Undone" due to the warmth he felt the medium possesses.
In shooting the 'Truth or Dare' scene, Rosa Salazar (Alma) was initially unsure if her subtle reaction to the kiss would translate through the animation process. After viewing the finished episode, she was shocked by how accurate the animators were able to convey her understated expressions here.
Actor Siddharth Dhananjay (Sam) was discovered online when "Patti Cake$" (2017) Director Geremy Jasper stumbled across Dhananjay's spoof-rap videos.
Rosa Salazar instantly connected with the themes and characters of "Undone," and knew she wanted to play 'Alma' after reading just the first two scripts.
