- Molly and Abbey, along with their crew of close friends and acquaintances, host a dysfunctional, comical and chaotic Thanksgiving dinner.
- Abby is looking forward to a laid-back Thanksgiving with her best friend Molly. But the friends' plans for a quiet turkey dinner go up in smoke when they're joined by Molly's new boyfriend and her flamboyant mother. Throw in some party crashers including Molly's old flame, a wannabe shaman, and a trio of Fairy Gay Mothers, and it's a recipe for a comically chaotic holiday no one will ever forget-even if they wanted to.
- In Los Angeles, Abby is at a grocery store shopping for Thanksgiving. She is talking to mother Linda and sister Barbara on her cell phone. The temperature is 19 where they are. Abby wishes she could be with them, but she is spending a quiet day with Molly, who she shares a nice house with, and her baby Eden. Abby broke up with Maeve earlier in the year and Molly is becoming annoyed with her inability to move on, while Abby is bothered that Molly is moving too fast in her life.
Molly appears to be a prostitute who specializes in S & M. However, it turns out she and boyfriend Jeff are role playing, and they decide to just have conventional sex. Jeff is a philanthropist whose charities help people in different parts of the world. Molly is an actress who is not yet divorced from Michael, who left her with a five-month-old after four years.
Abby gets thrown out of the grocery for drinking. She wrecks the Christmas display as she leaves.
Jeff makes breakfast for Molly, wearing just an apron which Abby is shown wearing later. Molly gets a call from Lauren, who says she, Dan and the kids can't visit Dan's family because of illness. Molly says they should come over.
Abby returns home with groceries she apparently got somewhere else and when she meets Jeff, he is naked.
A delivery man brings a photo booth and props for Thanksgiving dinner. This was Jeff's idea. The delivery man recognizes Molly from one of her action movie roles and tells her how great she was. While the man is explaining what he has, Molly's mother Helen arrives unexpectedly from Sweden. Helen has been married five times and talks frankly about sex.
Abby has several more cell phone conversations with her family. Uncle Sal and Aunt Anna get involved later.
The quiet dinner that was planned will soon have many more people, as Lauren has invited others. And Molly's agent Rick shows up with wife Brianne, who has had Botox and can't speak intelligible words. Gus has no one to spend Thanksgiving with because he and his family don't get along. Helen invited Molly's ex Gunnar because they have a friendly online relationship, though it soon becomes clear their relationship is more than that.
And the first of several potential dates for Abby show up. Each woman, as she arrives, explains who she is by talking directly to the camera, with different lighting, as if making a dating video.
Most of the guests have brought a dish, so Abby has to figure out when each dish has to go in the oven in order to be ready. It is 2:15, and dinner is scheduled for 5:00. Abby is in charge of the kitchen and she insists everyone leave so she can work.
The guests have fun outside, and photos are taken, using the photo booth and props. Helen and Gunnar dance to salsa music, and others dance along with them.
Jeff needs to make a dish, so he comes in the kitchen, and Abby jokingly tells him he should take off his shirt so he won't mess it up. Jeff, who is described as being like the statue of David, not only takes off his shirt but never puts it back on for the rest of the movie.
Abby is also responsible for Eden, so she spends some time in the baby's room. There is a baby monitor so it is not necessary for someone to be in there all the time. Molly and Lauren join her and talk about woman stuff. Lauren says she has mushrooms she was given by her shaman, and she takes one.
And the shaman arrives, with a purple gluten-free pie. Claire calls herself a sha-woman. Abby, who has seen on social media that Maeve got engaged, has a meltdown and Claire unsuccessfully tries to get her to deal with her anger. Abby disappears and Molly is now responsible for getting the food outside to where the table was set up.
It is time to eat. Someone points out that there should be a blessing of some kind. One member of the group thinks that means a Christian prayer but Claire quickly takes over and offers a spiritual, nondenominational blessing, and she asks everyone to say what they are thankful for. Only a few members of the group are shown saying what they are thankful for.
Abby tries the mushrooms hoping they will make her feel better. She falls asleep in Eden's room and dreams of three Fairy Gaymothers, who claim they are there because she is a new lesbian. Abby says she has had relationships with two women so she's not new. Still, she stayed in the closet for years. The three women give her advice and then tell her to knock her wing-tip Oxfords together and say, "There's no place like Home Depot". At that point Abby wakes up wearing her regular shoes, and she briefly joins the group eating.
When Abby needs comforting again, Lauren joins her in the bathroom. Abby says she hasn't made out in nearly a year, and Lauren kisses her. Abby likes it and they continue to kiss. Lauren's daughter Lily comes in and wonders what is going on and the women struggle to explain. Dan shows up and Lily explains the situation. Dan isn't happy and wishes if they were going to do that, they should let him join.
Two of the lesbians fall for each other.
Helen and Gunnar continue to behave like they are a couple, which annoys Molly. Molly and Helen get in an argument and Helen admits her marriage is over.
Someone has arranged for an older man to meet Helen, and they hit it off.
Helen agrees to watch Eden, but she doesn't do a good job, distracted by other interests. Molly hears Eden crying on the baby monitor and rushes to see what is wrong. Eden has a rash and is breathing strangely. Abby shows up and admits she gave Eden pecans. Molly calls an ambulance but a Lyft will get there faster. Jeff joins her (still not wearing a shirt), and the Lyft takes them to the hospital. Jeff overheard Molly saying Jeff was just a rebound and Molly has to admit that is what Jeff is.
Abby also goes to the hospital and gets in an argument with the E.R. nurse because she is not on the list of family. Molly sees her and says Abby is family. While they wait for Eden to be allowed to leave, Abby and Molly work out their differences. Then they go back home.
Lauren and her family say their goodbyes and Dan continues to express dismay that he wasn't part of a threesome. Molly and Helen settle their differences.
