Netflix unveiled the trailer for “Ultraman: Rising” (premiering at Annecy June 12 and streaming June 14), the animated feature from first-time director Shannon Tindle, who re-imagines the legendary anime franchise from Tsuburaya Productions as an action-packed, heartwarming ode to parenthood.
With Tokyo under siege from rising kaiju attacks, Dodgers baseball superstar Ken Sato (Christopher Sean) reluctantly returns home to take on the mantle of rogue superhero Ultraman from his father (Gedde Watanabe) while signing with the Giants. But he has trouble balancing his passion for baseball and his family obligation to be Ultraman. Then, when forced to raise a 35-foot-tall, fire-breathing baby kaiju girl, Sato must confront his huge ego to protect her and Japan from destruction.
Tindle first conceived of his film as an original parental superhero story (“Made in Japan”). That was back in 2001 when he was a character designer on “Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends.” He later developed it...

"Ultraman - do your job!" Netflix has unveiled the full official trailer for Ultraman: Rising, a brand new animated take on Ultraman from director Shannon Tindle (also of Kubo and "Lost Ollie"). This has been in development for years at Ilm, with the VFX house handling most of the key animation, along side Netflix Animation & Tsuburaya Productions. Based on the classic Japanese mecha superhero of the same name, this Ultraman movie is a fresh update made for American audiences (there's already the Ultraman anime series on Netflix to watch as well). Ken Sato is a superstar baseball player who returns to Japan to become the latest hero to carry the mantle of Ultraman. His plans go awry, however, when he ends up raising a newborn kaiju monster as his own kid. Staring Christopher Sean, Tamlyn Tomita, Gedde Watanabe, Keone Young, and Julia Harriman. This is a fantastic trailer that really...

Ultraman has been fighting kaiju for more than 50 years, but you’ve never seen him like this. The Japanese hero is coming to Netflix in a new animated film, Ultraman: Rising, and you won’t believe who he’s bringing along.
After decades of Ultramanappearances, beginning with the original 1966 television series created by Eiji Tsuburaya and Tetsuo Kinjo, the film introduces an all-new Ultraman: baseball star Ken Sato. In the new trailer for Ultraman: Rising, which you can watch above, you’ll get a glimpse at one of the challenges Sato faces: a baby kaiju, who imprints on Ultraman and turns his world upside down.
For director Shannon Tindle (creator of Lost Ollie), everything about Ultraman: Rising sprung from this initial concept. “What if I took a character who doesn’t want to be Ultraman, who kind of messes up his job on one of his early outings and...

Tatsuki Fujimoto has always had an eye for talent, such could be easily seen with his former editors Tatsuya Endo and Yuji Kaku. Both of them now stand big in the world of shonen manga with Spy x Family and Hell’s Paradise. The former has already been ruling the hearts of the fans while the latter made its way to the top three of the dark shonen trio. Alongside Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man stands Kaku’s Hell’s Paradise.

Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball series is generational, the show has been continuing for 38 years, yet the viewers are not bored of it. This is majorly thanks to the franchise’s iconic features such as the Super Saiyan Transformations, and the epic battles that follow it. While Toriyama-Sensei’s heroes get all the praise for saving the day, his villains are equally iconic as they push the Z-Fighters out of their comfort zones, forcing them to break past their limits.

From King Piccolo to Kid Buu, the series features a ton of iconic villains that have made the fans sit at the edge of their seats and bite their nails in anticipation as they make them shiver with their malevolent nature. However, none of the villains could come close to killing Kakarot except one in Dragon Ball Super.

People are lining up for selfies with one star on Superman set and it is not David Corenswet or James Gunn. The cast & crew of Superman are falling head over heels for Ira Corenswet. The canine companion of Corenswet first stole the heart and chair of Rachel Brosnahan, who plays Lois Lane in the movie. María Gabriela de Faría, who plays The Engineer, has now shared that she was lucky enough to get a picture with Ira.

One of Hollywood's most frustrating recent news stories is that Francis Ford Coppola is having trouble finding distribution for his self-funded passion project, "Megalopolis" (via The Hollywood Reporter). In a just world, making "The Godfather" would grant Coppola a lifetime blank check, but that has never been the world we've lived in.
What you may not be aware of is one of Coppola's influences for his magnum opus. Like his friend "Star Wars" director George Lucas, Coppola looked to Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa. While Lucas took after Kurosawa's Jidaigeki (historical) films, Coppola looked to one of the director's contemporary-set films: "The Bad Sleep Well."
Released in 1960 and starring his go-to leading man Toshiro Mifune, the movie is one of Kurosawa's (comparatively) more obscure ones. It was especially overshadowed by "High and Low," the masterful kidnapping thriller that Kurosawa and Mifune released in 1963. Both movies are set in the world of...

Guillermo del Toro's "Pacific Rim" remains one of the very best live-action films inspired by anime that wasn't actually based on anime (though it eventually became one). The 2013 movie is essentially about giant robots fighting kaiju. Its influences are many, from kaiju movies like "Godzilla" and the work of Ray Harryhausen, but also clearly tokusatsu like del Toro's beloved "Ultraman" and even mecha anime like "Gunbuster," "Getter Robo," and "Mazinger Z."
"Pacific Rim," arguably more so than "The Matrix," feels like the biggest American movie inspired by anime, a movie made by someone who loves the medium, at a time when anime was starting to enter the mainstream. But if you asked Guillermo del Toro that question shortly before the release of the film, it seems he would have been a nervous wreck.

Comic book fans frequently navigate through a sea of online rumors, especially when it comes to upcoming movies. A recent example is the chatter surrounding the villain in James Gunn’s Superman reboot.
Superman from DC Comics
The movie explores Clark Kent/Superman’s internal conflict. He is a reporter in Metropolis with extraordinary powers. Born on the planet Krypton, he was raised by the Kent family on Earth, giving him both Kryptonian heritage (his alien origin and powers) and a human upbringing (the values he learned from his adoptive parents).
The movie delves into how he grapples with these two identities. Recently, rumors have also circulated about Ultraman appearing as the villain in the film, but Gunn quickly clarified these reports.

Don’t get caught up in the speculation about Ultraman—James Gunn has set the record straight himself.

The idea of humans transforming into monsters to address injustice isn’t new; manga like Attack on Titan and Parasyte have already included it. Still, Kaiju No.8 returns to the notion that if a human becomes a kaiju, it must be among the strongest and the greatest of two species.
While some may dismiss Kaiju No.8 as a mere imitation of Attack On Titan, it actually presents the narrative with a finesse that arguably surpasses its predecessor.
Echoing the legendary Godzilla series, Kaiju No.8 mirrors Attack On Titan in several ways, particularly in how its central characters, Kafka Hibino, and Eren Yeager, possess the remarkable ability to morph into the very creatures that threaten their worlds.
The Parralel of Kafka and Eren Yeager
Eren Yeager from Attack on Titan
Unlike Eren Yeager, who was praised for his mastery of omnidirectional mobility gear against Titans, Kafka is essentially at a disadvantage with his humanity.

“Only ignorant fools say ‘ninja.’” So claims Taki, the mysterious matron of the Tawara family, as she sternly corrects her grandson in the old ways. Played by veteran actress Nobuko Miyamoto, there’s much more to Grandma Taki than meets the eye. Such is the way of the world in Netflix’s new series, House of Ninjas. The proper term is “shinobi.” It’s what was used historically.
House of Ninjas is a new action dramedy that follows a modern-day shinobi family who has forsaken the lethal trade of their ancestors for a “normal” life. And like in every dramedy, the Tawaras are comically and tragically dysfunctional. The family patriarch, Soichi (Yosuke Eguchi) struggles to maintain a low-key profile whilst his wife Yoko (Tae Kimura) and daughter Nagi (Aju Makita) succumb to their old devious habits, stealing stuff just for the rush. Their thievery goes from grocery store shoplifting to museum art object theft.

The original 1954 "Godzilla" was directed by Ishirō Honda, butithout minimizing his importance, it's impossible that the film would have turned out the same way without the special effects Director Eiji Tsuburaya. Portraying a giant monster with the convincing scale of Godzilla had almost never been done before and crafting the monster was Tsuburaya's responsibility.
Tsuburaya had a prolific career that began almost 30 years before he worked on "Godzilla," and included previous collaborations with Honda on the war films "Eagle of the Pacific" and "Farewell Rabaul." Today, though, he is mostly remembered as "the father of Tokusatsu" or effects-heavy Japanese film/TV. Such productions typically depict actors in costume as giant monsters, robots, or superheroes. Tsuburaya earned this title not just through his work on "Godzilla" and subsequent films (such as "Rodan"), but by creating the 1967 TV series turned media phenomenon "Ultraman."

Today, though, he is mostly remembered as "the father of Tokusatsu" or effects-heavy Japanese film/TV. Such productions typically depict actors in costume as giant monsters, robots, or superheroes. Tsuburaya earned this title not just through his work on "Godzilla" and subsequent films (such as "Rodan"), but by creating the 1967 TV series turned media phenomenon "Ultraman."

With a title like Ninja vs Shark you might think this is another Mark Polonia film along the lines of Sharkula or Shark Encounters of the Third Kind. Or maybe one of the more bizarre Chinese kaiju films such as Land Shark. But you’d be wrong, it’s actually a Japanese film written by Junichiro Ashiki and directed by Kôichi Sakamoto.
During Japan’s Edo Period, Sayo, a pearl diver from the village of Okitsu, swims back to shore only to find the remains of one of her fellow divers washed up on the beach. This has been happening a lot since Lord Koshiro Mizuchi of the Crimson Devil Clan demanded the villagers hand over their pearls to him. When they refused he used sorcery to turn the sharks into living weapons.

Ultraman: Rising is an upcoming action-packed animated film based on a kaiju villain and a superhero who is a baseball player and has to protect Earth against a huge monster. Netflix released the official teaser trailer of Ultraman: Rising during the 2023 GeekedWeek in November. From the first looks of it, the whole superhero demeanor of Ultraman looks like that of a combination of The Flash’s Barry Allen, MCU’s Antman, and Ben 10’s Omnitrix aliens. For those wondering whether Ultraman belongs to Marvel or DC — it belongs to neither. While there are both separate Marvel and DC characters named...

One wouldn’t think that a schlocky slasher series about killer puppets would produce more than a dozen films across three decades, let alone sequels that are still being discussed today, yet here we are getting deep in the weeds over the straight-to-video sequel bliss that is Puppet Master 4. Puppet Master is easily the most successful property to come out of Charles Band’s Full Moon Features, best known for movies like Castle Freak and Subspecies, as well as more low-hanging fruit like The Gingerdead Man and The Evil Bong series. Puppet Master falls comfortably between these two extremes. After a satisfying initial trilogy that chronicles the grandiose revenge scheme of a persecuted toymaker, Puppet Master–like many long-running horror series–is forced to ask, “What’s next?”
In Puppet Master’s case, the franchise strangely pivots towards the rehabilitation of Blade, Leech Woman, Six-Shooter, and the rest of these...

"Ken – she thinks you are her mother." Netflix has released the teaser trailer during Netflix Geeked Week 2023 for the upcoming re-imagining of the Ultraman series. From director Shannon Tindle comes Ultraman: Rising, a 3D animated movie arriving for streaming on Netflix in 2024. His plans go awry, however, when he is compelled to raise a newborn kaiju monster as his own kid. Voice cast features Christopher Sean, Tamlyn Tomita, Gedde Watanabe,...

Ultraman is back.
The character, created by Eiji Tsuburaya in 1966 with the “Ultra Q” and “Ultraman” television series, is back in a brand-new animated feature called “Ultraman Rising.” It’s due out next year but you can watch the trailer above.
In “Ultraman Rising,” baseball superstar Ken Sato, the new Ultraman, “quickly finds more than he bargained for as he’s forced to raise the offspring of his greatest foe,” according to the official synopsis. The trailer shows him battling a huge monster and then effectively adopting the monster’s child, which puts him at odds with his persona as creature-slaying titan. There’s a wonderful moment in the trailer where Ken shrinks down to his human size but the baby still towers above him.
The voice cast for the animated feature includes Christpher Sean, Gedde Watanabe, Tamlyn Tomita, Keone Young and Julia Harriman. Shannon Tindle, creator of Netflix’s fantastic “Lost Ollie,...

Producer Jason Blum believes what sets Five Nights at Freddy’s apart from other adaptations is “the care that was taken with the story to create something based on a beloved game.” Universal Pictures’ new featurette is dedicated to the game’s fans, and director/co-writer Emma Tammi says that every creative decision they made was with the goal of doing justice to the game and its massive fan base.
Josh Hutcherson and Elizabeth Lail lead the cast of the horror film. Piper Rubio, Kat Conner Sterling (We Have a Ghost), Mary Stuart Masterson (Blindspot), and Matthew Lillard also star.
Scott Cawthon created the Five Night at Freddy’s game and is involved as a writer and producer. Seth Cuddeback also co-wrote the screenplay, with Bea Sequeira, Russell Binder, Marc Mostman, and Christopher H. Warner executive producing. Jim Henson’s Creature Shop created the film’s animatronic characters.

No one knew how big this was going to be, or is going to be, but Universal/Blumhouse’s feature take on beloved horror video game, Five Nights at Freddy‘s is eyeing a $50 million-plus start and possibly even more. At that level, it would make it the second-best domestic box office opening of the fall behind Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour ($92.8M).
Note the pre-Halloween weekend isn’t known as a robust time for launching films, with the frame’s biggest openings Puss in Boots with $34M back in 2011 and 2006’s Saw III with $33.6M.
Presales have grown to a crazy amount on this $20M production since we last reported (some saying well north of $11M), with some exhibitors projecting a tentpole-type opening of $85M. However, what should give one pause here is the whole theatrical day-and-date of it all on Peacock (note the movie is only available on a paid tier). Last year,...

The Japanese girl group Atarashii Gakko! has released their newest song, “Tokyo Calling,” a spectacular harmony with humorous lyrics about saving the citizens of Japan from being trapped in continuous monotony in their daily lives. It is a marvelous banger and is further enriched by its satirical commentary on Japanese society. Another appealing aspect of the song, in addition to the lyrics and the vocals of Mizyu, Suzuka, Rin, and Kanon, is the melody that blends modern J-pop and rap elements with traditional orchestral compositions in the same vein as composers like Akira Ifukube and Shiro Sagisu.

One of the greatest underdogs in daikaijū history is a turtle. To be more exact, a giant turtle who breathes flames, flies by jet propulsion and, most importantly, protects mankind from other colossal monsters. And after a lengthy absence on screen, the herculean turtle Gamera is back in an animated series called Gamera Rebirth. Netflix has gifted eager fans an exciting new story that demonstrates the titanic turtle’s appeal and extends his legacy.
While Gamera isn’t exactly unknown by the masses, his presence is, for the most part, limited to the East. There is also the undeniable fact that Gamera is overshadowed by his clear inspiration and pop-cultural counterpart, Godzilla. Between these two Japanese icons, though, Gamera has had a tougher time overcoming his past. An acclaimed ‘90s trilogy of films, one that reimagined Gamera as a serious antihero, was directly responsible for the monster’s critical reevaluation.

Whoever wins, we lose. When Disney wins, however, everyone loses.
/Film reported back in May of 2023 that Disney, as part of its massive acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019, had inherited an already-complete 10-episode anime TV series based on the nerd-sating "Alien vs. Predator" series. The show's existence was confirmed by Joshua Izzo, the former director of licensing at 20th Century Fox, on the "Perfect Organism" podcast. Izzo said that the 10-episode series was complete, but that it was locked in a vault at Disney, hidden from public view. This is a common practice during mergers and management changes. The new administration as a film studio or record label, wanting to work solely on their own projects, will often shelve the previous administration's projects as a mode of keeping the slate clean. This means a lot of excellent art has never seen the light of day, or was released with so little fanfare,...

The passing of Ryuichi Sakamoto in March 2023 marked a sad and significant loss for the world of music. Debuting with his experimental solo EP Thousand Knives (1978) at the age of twenty-six, Sakamoto would go on to have a 45-year-long career as a musician, producing countless solo albums and film scores, as well as music with the Japanese electropop band Yellow Magic Orchestra. Tracing his blossoming career in the mid-1980s was French photographer Elizabeth Lennard, who directed the made-for-tv documentary “Tokyo Melody: un film sur Ryuichi Sakamoto” (1985). The film presents an economically prosperous Tokyo, along with an intimate portrait of Sakamoto as he works on his then-upcoming solo album, Ongaku Zukan (1984).
Tokyo Melody is screening at Japan Cuts

Tokusatsu and Kaiju, what better a combination? Shin Ultraman, part of the Shin Japan Heroes Universe Project, is the third film in a series that takes classic Japanese media and brings it to the modern big screen. Hideaki Anno co-directed this film alongside Shinji Higuchi, as well as serving as the script writer, co-producer, and co-editor. As a result, just as with the pair’s previous project together (Shin Godzilla), this has Anno’s aesthetic and sensibilities all over it; this being evident in terms of cinematography, philosophical themes, and the score. Speaking of the score, Shiro Sagisu did an excellent job with the material used for the film. The musical score includes original material composed by Shiro Sagisu as well as reused material from previous Ultraman series such as the 1965 series Ultraman Q, along with several unused tracks from previous projects that were composed by Shiro...
