South and West Asian films make up the entirety of this years Brooklyn Film Festival’s (Bff) Asian film line-up. As with the rest of their programme, the festival has a good mix of movies. Of the features spanning from Turkey to Syria to Nepal, some are East Coast premieres; some US; some even world. While the standard Asia-based narratives persist, the festival also leans into modern-day trends to feature more diaspora narratives. Notably, of these entries, almost half of them (3 out of 7) highlight Muslim or Islam-influenced narratives.
Earlier this week, the Brooklyn Film Festival announced the film lineup for its 24th edition, “The Clearing.” The 2021 edition will feature 36 World Premieres, 28 USA bows, 34 east coast debuts, and 25 first-time screenings in NY. In total, Bff will show in competition 147 features and shorts from 35 countries. The full lineup includes 13 narrative features and 9 documentary features highlighted in this release. As American film and TV has finally begun to embrace more joyful queer storylines over the last few years, the darkness of international queer cinema reflects a bleaker picture of the realities of gay life in the rest of the world. “Consequences,” which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, is the first Slovenian film to ever deal with Lgbtq themes, a fact that augurs the film’s unflinchingly dark outlook.
That’s not to say there isn’t much to enjoy in Darko Stante’s debut feature, which is impeccably crafted, and boosted by an electrifying performance from its smoldering young lead, the equal parts brooding and babyfaced Matej Zemljic. “Consequences” thrums with a vibrant current — propelled by a dizzying churn of cigarettes, cocaine, fistfights, and shirtless young men — until arriving at its predictably explosive conclusion. The film’s perspective may be austere, but its heart is defiantly exuberant.

In a boon for international queer cinema, Slovenia has produced its first ever narrative Lgbtq film, which is getting a limited U.S. theatrical release this summer. “Consequences” premiered at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival as part of the festival’s robust Discovery lineup, which showcases international filmmakers on the cutting edge. Slovenian filmmaker Darko Štante’s debut feature is based on his own experiences working with youth in a correctional facility, and tells the story of a troubled teen navigating the harsh hierarchy of a detention center while coming to terms with his sexuality.
IndieWire has obtained the exclusive first trailer to this charged coming of age drama ahead of the film’s forthcoming U.S. theatrical release.
“Centered on a powerhouse performance from charismatic newcomer Matej Zemljic, the film takes an unflinching look at the raw impulses of adolescence and the insecurity that lies beneath,” the Tiff synopsis reads.

Camila Cabello has done it again. She always manages to deliver some of the best live performances, and her Grammys production on Sunday night was no different.
The "Consequences" singer and Grammy nominee took the stage to show off her amazing moves and vocals, and we're still dancing in our seats. Sporting a bright yellow gown, the 21-year-old Cuba native mashed up her smash hit "Havana" with J. Balvin's "Mi Gente," who also made a cameo.
And, the cutest part of her performance? It was inspired by her family! Before her set, Cabello told E! News that her set would be based on her grandmother's childhood, when her family would just get together and jam out - and that definitely showed through in the colorful, upbeat set.
Cabello received two Grammy nominations in the categories best pop performance for "Havana (Live)" and best pop vocal album for her self-titled 2018 musical collection Camila.

Jean-Luc Godard, the subject of a film showcase at this year’s Lumière Film Festival in Lyon that includes his latest film, “The Image Work,” remains a hot commodity for Paris-based sales group Wide.
The company, which is attending the fest’s International Classic Film Market with a strong heritage film lineup, recently signed a number of new deals for Godard’s 1962 drama “Vivre sa vie” in major markets in Asia. Wide sold the newly restored 4K version of “Vivre sa vie,” which stars Anna Karina, to Japan’s Zazie Film and Alto Media in South Korea as well as to the China Film Archive.
“We see that the Asian market is really looking into the classics,” said Maxime Montagne, Wide’s head of business affairs and acquisitions, noting that China in particular is looking to put together a catalog of important classics.

The Scoobies are good at fighting monsters, but they're terrible at planning interventions. Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 3 Episode 15 showed that they only made things worse for the Faith situation.
With a little more care and planning, they could've gotten through to her. I believed it when I was eight years old; and I still believe it now after rewatching again. They completely fumbled in convincing her to trust them.
Let's discuss why by rewatching "Consequences."
Faith's and Buffy's reactions to the murder shed some light on their personalities.
Whereas Buffy was wracked with guilt and having nightmares, Faith brushed it off and internalized her pain. The secret weighed too heavy on Buffy's conscious to not be addressed.
That's not to say Faith didn't have a conscious. She absolutely did! On the other hand, survival was more important to her. As long as she didn't get in trouble or hurt,...

Just one day after dominating the American Music Awards, Camila Cabello has released the official music video for "Consequences," the same song she performed onstage during the show. In the video, the 21-year-old pop star walks through a park and passes by multiple ghostly flashbacks - both happy and sad - of her relationship with a man played by Dylan Sprouse. The two share a few sweet kisses, play piano together, and share a dance in midair before Cabello plops on a bench and tearfully reflects on her heartbreak. Watch the entire sentimental video above - but we suggest grabbing a box of tissues first because it's sure to leave you feeling a bit emotional.

What happened? Somehow the American Music Awards turned out to be bizarrely undisastrous this year. As cheesy award shows go, this one has always been on a sub-cheddar level, usually held back for the holiday season and usually totally ignored. But for some reason, the AMAs decided to be a big deal last night, packing the show with stellar performances, from Taylor to Cardi. They invited Khalid instead of Khaled. They did an Aretha Franklin tribute that focused on music instead of Madonna giving a speech. Tracee Ellis Ross hosted in style,...

Elections have consequences, and by electing Taylor Swift as the American Music Awards’ artist of the year, pop fans gave the superstar another platform from which to spread her crazy, incendiary, rabble-rousing entreaties to… find a polling place. “Every single award given out tonight was voted on by the people,” Swift said, upon picking up her third and final award of the evening, “and you know what else is voted on by the people is the midterm elections Nov. 6. Get out and vote.” As if we needed a reason to like her about 25% more right now.
No one would accuse the AMAs of getting repeatedly or unusually political in the broadcast that took place from L.A. Microsoft Theater Tuesday night, but one presenter did take a cue from Swift, and that was presenting comedian Billy Eichner, who took the audience to church as he sermonized, “Young people of America,...

“Consequences” is a somewhat daring enterprise for Slovenia in that it doesn’t judge its characters for their bi or gay sexuality. Indeed, their simultaneous extreme machismo and party-hearty vibe seem designed to impress younger viewers that these figures are cool whoever they shag. Offshore, however, Darko Stante’s promising first feature looks more like a bad-boy beefcake fest whose precise point beyond titillation is unclear. Nonetheless, this well-crafted drama should be welcome at gay tests and in niche home-format sales around the world.
Broodingly handsome — though there’s scant evidence he’s actually the thinking type — Andrej (Matej Zemljic) is a mature-looking 18-year-old ne’er-do-well whose mother (Rosana Hribar) is at wit’s end with him. He refuses to attend school or get a job, and a rap sheet of petty criminal offenses is now capped by his striking a girl at a party after she’d complained about his lack of sexual follow-through.
