Solid Start for a New Take on Nancy Drew
afrisco22 August 2021
Now, when a lot of people think of, or see the name 'Nancy Drew,' the picture that automatically pops into their head is of the young, clean-cut, innocent girl detective. If you are looking for that, this show may not be for you. This is a reinvented, thrust into the 21st century Nancy and crew, but still laced with respect and homage to the original books.

This is meant for a younger audience - in terms of those who didn't necessarily grow up with the Nancy Drew books - but also an older audience in the terms of the maturity and issues dealt with throughout the show.

With all of that being said, I have really enjoyed this show (I am reviewing this in retrospect in a rewatch prior to Season 3). The characters are well fleshed out and are all three-dimensional, each has their own story and arc while not detracting from the fact that Nancy is the main protagonist.

Right off the bat this episode introduces the season long mystery, all of the important players in the town of Horseshoe Bay, the supernatural elements of the show, and the show's really stellar cinematography and aesthetics.

This is a pilot, so there is a lot of wiggle room for improvement, and the season starts a bit slow (definitely could have done without the voice over). But improve this show does, and it's completely worth the watch! The writing is so tight, especially in Season 2.

So, if you are reading this, please give this show a shot. If you like good writing, character development, supernatural scares, yet realistic drama, this show is for you. I think the fact this is on the CW and it was advertised as "Made by the People that Brought You Riverdale" really, really hurt the initial performance of this show. This show is NOTHING like Riverdale.

Give it a shot, get into the characters; they will all have your heart by mid-season.

I found this on HBO max and, when I went into it, I truely wasn't expecting anyhing.... but man ! I'm not sure why the first episode has a rating less than 7! This show has everything! Horror, drama, mystery and the acting is actually decent! And dude! SCOTT WOLF!

Is it a true supernatural show? Is it a murder mystery? I'm so intrigued by the characters! They all have motives... or are we just seeing a bias version from the point of view of the main character? The writing is good! I'm hooked at the pilot!

All I'm saying is give the show a chance despite the less than 7 rating! Pilot pulls you in!!!

Nancy Drew in name only

Warning: Spoilers
Leave it 21 century writers to screw up another character. She see things and jumps at shadows. So this Nancy Drew has early stage schizophrenia. At the end of the pilot you have a dress in a trunk in the attic of Drews house. I'll guess it was her mother's dress, Lucy was Drew's mothers friend or it's just evidence in a cold case. I'll watch eps 2, but this is one of those new series that you can wait for it to come on NetFlix.

Pilot

Pamela Sue Martin makes a guest appearance in the pilot. She was the Nancy Drew I remember as a kid back in the late 1970s. Way before she had a stint in Dynasty.

Flame headed Kennedy McMann takes over as Nancy Drew. She was a sleuth in her early years but after her mother's illness and later death she has given all that up.

She is now an 18-year-old in Horseshoe Bay working as a waitress at the diner, the Bayside Claw. Angry at her father who is a lawyer and has not time for his daughter anymore.

Nancy Drew is drawn back in when socialite Tiffany Hudson is killed outside the diner while her husband was inside with some friends. The police chief suspects Nancy and her workmates as well as her no strings attached boyfriend.

So Nancy takes it upon herself to clear her name as well as her friends.

Only her friends all have secrets. There is also a supernatural element connected with the death of the Sea Queen some 20 years earlier.

You can tell from the first episode that this will be a drawn out mystery. It's a puzzle why a lot of these resurrected old crime shows cannot do the whodunnit of the week anymore.

It also does not help there is a lot of dreary narration going on and this Nancy Drew also comes across as brattish.
