The Sundance Institute has announced its fellows for the 2024 Directors, Screenwriters, and Native labs, which include a diverse mix of artists from the realms of film, TV, and theatre. Notable alumni of the programs include Quentin Tarantino, Paul Thomas Anderson, Ryan Coogler, Wes Anderson, and Chloe Zhao.
“For over four decades since their conception, the labs remain critical to the vitality of the independent filmmaking community. After crafting half a dozen shorts and adding to her repertoire with recent social platform/television writing on horror series like “The Birch” followed by “The Girl in the Woods,” with her Sundance Screenwriters Lab invited screenplay Jane Casey Modderno appears to be making a 180-degree shift to the comedy space (she aptly notes that the two genres have more similarities than differences). It was fun to speak to the Los Angeles-based filmmaker during this particular Sundance edition which appeared to embrace a more diverse group of transgender-based storytelling, venturing into new genre territories with the likes of Will & Harper, Desire Lines and I Saw the TV Glow I was reminded how we are ripe for a take-over in all subgenres especially what might be a resort backdrop sun-splashed “thirsty rom-com.”…...

Grimcutty begins with a young boy, his hands and wrists covered in bandaids, sneaking out of his room as his mover reads articles about internet challenges. As he makes his way downstairs and gets a knife a half-glimpsed figure, Grimcutty, slips into the house. The boy then stabs his mother, apparently at the creature’s command.
After that we meet our main characters, Asha Chaudhry, her younger brother Kamran, and their parents Leah and Amir. Asha has recently quit the track team to devote her time to creating Asmr videos.
Rather than encourage her they blame “internet addiction” for her decision. Which leads to mandatory phone-free outings and other measures. Of course, they don’t give up their group chats, one of which warns them about something called the “Grimcutty...

Few things are as universally creepy as an old-fashioned urban legend. Kept alive through scary retellings at sleepovers and campfire tales, the information age ushered in by the internet had all but killed the wonder and fascination with these stories. That is until a new form of urban legend was born — the creepypasta. Slenderman is arguably the most well-known creepypasta, with the online meme unfortunately inspiring a very real murder attempt. This real-life violence has now allowed creepypastas to reignite the torch of power that the Internet extinguished from classic urban legends, and has given horror creatives a whole new playground to explore.

It only takes a bit of “The Witch”-craft and enduring the natural elements for Anya Taylor-Joy to fully feel like herself.
The “Northman” star revealed to British Vogue that she “ecstatically” embraced the elements while shooting the Robert Eggers-helmed Viking revenge epic, which shot in Northern Ireland — including scenes involving standing barefoot in mud or ice-cold ocean water.
“I looked insane. So infuriatingly joyful,” said Taylor-Joy, who it’s noted carried her belongings around in a plastic shopping bag on set during such scenes.
Taylor-Joy likened reuniting with “The Witch” director Eggers, plus cinematographer Jarin Blaschke and editor Louise Ford, to being back with her “original film family.” And she had no problem jumping — literally — into the period piece.
“The stunt guys would say, ‘Can we get out of the water now?’ And I was like, ‘This is amazing. Nature! We’re outside! We get to make art,...

Six years ago, genre entertainment company Crypt TV launched with the highly-ambitious mission statement of becoming “Marvel for monsters.”
While few can fly as high as that superhero engine, the past six months have been fruitful for the creators of indelible, digitally-native horror characters — particularly in proving they can scale original intellectual property across platforms.

Earlier this summer, a consortium of characters got their own installation at Universal Studios Florida’s Halloween Horror Night, ushering the company into live events. Weeks before that, in May, the top-rated horror video game “Dead...

Exclusive: Facebook Watch has opted not to renew its original series Sorry For Your Loss, starring Elizaeth Olsen, for a third season and Limetown, headlined by Jessica Biel, for a second. The critically praised Sorry For Your Loss is being shopped around, I hear.
Facebook Watch still has several scripted series in the pipeline, which will be released as planned. Going forward, the company will be pairing down significantly their scripted development efforts. Word around town is that Facebook is leaving the scripted business. Sources close to the situation indicate that Facebook is not closing the door completely on original scripted programming if the right project came along but its focus is shifting to unscripted fare where it’s had more success and better traction with Facebook users.
Among Facebook Watch’s most popular originals are the Daytime Emmy-nominated Red Table Talk with Jada Pinkett Smith as well as Returning the Favor with Mike Rowe.

Crypt TV, the digital studio founded by Eli Roth and Jack Davis and backed by Jason Blum, expanded its deal with Facebook, inking a content partnership to create a slate of five horror and monster-themed series exclusively for Facebook Watch.
For Facebook Watch, it’s one of the first deals for a full slate of content from a partner — as opposed to deals for one-off shows, as it has been doing to date. The goal: to build a personalized, social-video experience for Facebook Watch from digital partners like Crypt TV that have a strong brand and loyal following on Facebook.
Crypt TV, founded in 2015, has 3 million followers on Facebook and initially launched with Facebook as its primary exclusive platform in the first two years of the company.
Facebook has agreed to fund five new series, each approximately 10 episodes, under the pact. Facebook Watch and Crypt TV are currently in active development on other shows.

Crypt TV and Facebook Watch have inked a deal for the digital horror network to create five exclusive original series for the social media platform’s service. The projects are in development and extend the relationship between the two companies that includes a deal last fall to turn Crypt TV’s monster short The Birch into a 15-episode series.
The new plan will be to make about 10 episodes per series, with Jack Davis, Kate Krantz and Darren Brandl executive producing them for Crypt TV. The CAA-supported wiip will serve as co-producer.
Crypt TV’s network includes streaming its original monster IP on YouTube and Facebook, the latter to take advantage of the platform’s core video, Ar camera lenses, messenger and merchandise interfaces. Recent funding rounds by the company founded by CEO Jack Davis and Eli Roth included buy-ins from investors including Blumhouse Productions, Lerer Hippeau, NBCUniversal and Advancit Capital.
