Doctor G
puranjanbasak12 December 2022
Doctor G is a comedy drama film directed by anubhuti kashyap.

Ayushmann khurana does what he has done over the years. There was nothing new from her. Rakul preet singh has fallen off the cliff it seems, her acting potential is substantially declining. Sheeba chaddha and shefali shah hold the ship together with their presence. The supporting cast is good.

The screenplay is engaging. Its more of a drama than comedy, the drama is built well. The shift from a chauvinist to losing the "male touch" was handled well. The film talks about sensitive topics. It tried to layer it in comedy, but the trope is getting repetitve to be honest.

Music is pretty average. There is no chartbuster or any instant-likeable song.

Light movie but story could have been structured better
prema_menon17 December 2022
Movie is ok ok. Ended abruptly.

Ayushman has done better movies than this. Shefali Shah is a brilliant actor as always & so is Sheeba.

Movie concept was good. Story could have been crafted better to make it a hit & with good message. Was a bit of mixture message and was all over the place with multiple things happening.

A one off watch and very light one though. Lots in but not conveyed as expected. Can take it as a time pass with no thinking to be done.

Ayushman's movie's are usually worth watching and comes out with a good theme and message but this did not hit the mark.

Hope to see better ones in future.

Superb Performance, but story lets you down
Kulin3316 October 2022
Before interval everything seems interesting and after that everything changes to disappoint

You'll enjoy the first half of the movie as it is filled with good jokes and punch lines. In the second half everything goes down hill as the story takes a very different approach towards the characters.

The cast is really great as acting wise everyone does a fabulous job

I have given it a 7 star just coz of the performance by the actors. Other than that it will stoop even lower.

The song Step Copy was also missing from the movie, saw it on the YouTube ads god knows what was going on.

Brilliant attempt at addressing overlooked issues of personal life
yogeshsingla-3157315 December 2022
While the movie has some shortcomings in storytelling, cinematography, script and overall art of movie making, it is a brave attempt to highlight issues lurking in our society.

For the people who hope for it to be a comedy movie or those who think it is addressing a social issue; both extremes will be dissatisfied after the movie.

Instead of defining what you expect the movie to be, taking it with an open mind will reveal a hidden commentary on social characters in our life.

Media will have us believe about the glamorous life of dating and partying and having "fun". Netflix and chills? This movie underlines what is real character and success.

Gynaecology is not the theme here. It was just a tool to highlight the majority male mentality. This movie is not a commentary on stereotypes associated with medical roles. It is a movie that primarily highlights how men behave and think especially with women who refused their proposal. Ask any of your female friends, how much insulting it can be to lose a friend after refusing a proposal. It reveals the motives of men in talking to women and the inability to maintain a platonic relationship or see their partners have platonic relationships.

The underlying thread in the movie is about this male mindset and not about a profession or a love story.

This movie is accurately tagged as drama. It is neither a documentary nor a comedy although it might share some parts from it.

While I won't place this movie as 10/10, it definitely doesn't deserve the extreme hatred it is getting in some reviews. I appreciate everyone so time and effort that went in producing this.

It's a brilliant effort and trying to send a message that not many dare to convey. A typical movie might have had their love story continue and keep the finny gag up and entertain the audience. But this movie took the road less travelled.

Not a Munnabhai MBBS!!
nadkarnisumeet15 October 2022
Doctor G review :

A bitter sweet take on the gynec profession; Doctor G is another addition to the list of offbeat and light comedies which seem to have become the fortè of Ayushmann Khurrana. He plays an aspiring orthopedic student who is forced to take up gynecology due to his poor medical grades.

The performances are first rate with Shefali Shah and Sheeba Chaddha as the standouts. Rakul Preet Singh gets a smaller part as Khurrana's collegue who wishes to friendzone him and not go the marriage route. Never mind if they shared a passionate smooch together!!

Ayushmann Khurrana is in his element throughout changing gears effortlessly from comedy in first half to a serious avatar post interval when the movie shifts focus to an underage abortion.

More suited for an OTT watch, Doctor G can be risked in theatres. You will love the performances and a few gags in first hour will bring a smile. But dont expect a Munnabhai MBBS please!!

Regards, Sumeet Nadkarni.

Just about decent one time watch !
Biswas_15 October 2022
Yet another Ayushman Khurrana film that deals with a taboo topic related to Gynaecologist. Through the film you see a young student, uninterested in Gynaecology getting into the subject and breaking the myth that only females can be good Gynaecologist.

Doesn't leave much of an impact but the film is definitely interesting to watch. Never gets too preachy at any time . Climax was quite interesting but i felt it was a bit short . Humor works well wherever present.

Performances were good . AK is in his comfort zone. Sheeba chadda brings good comic relief but has an emotional tale in the 2nd half. Shefali Shah yet again delivers a standout performance. Rakul preet was very average.

The love angle was totally unnecessary and increases the length of the already short film by atleast 20 mins. Sheeba chadda's mini subplot could have been avoided. Lastly, the film doesn't leave much impact.

Overall, a decent one timer.

Nice movie
sarkargita-7439016 October 2022
DoctorG is pleasant in parts. I liked it more as a coming of age drama than a genre specific to the world it's set in. #ShefaliShah is at her usual best. #Ayushmann is good. The world building & character building is amazing. The themes used to move the story lack finesse. 3/5 good movie 1st half is average it includes comedy which is decent, the plot is in the second half and it's executed well by the director ayushmann khurrana gave his best 💯 Overall it's a good movie, give it a try since there's no new movie releasing this week Thank you for entering the sahi jagah and making DoctorG's entry to the big screens a success.

Movie Based On Unique Story But Screenplay Is Weak
shahedshanto17 October 2022
The story of the movie is completely different. The screenplay is decent. There are some entertaining scenes while some are boring and unnecessary. The movie is based on doctors life. Drama movie. The end of the movie is somewhat emotional. The movie is a complete adult movie. The movie has some dialogues which are meant for adults. Double meaning dialogues are more in this movie. Moreover, there is no bad scene in the movie. The movie has some comedy scenes. The performance of all the actors in the movie is good. Specially Ayushman Khurana's performance is very good. There is no music in the movie. I didn't like any of the songs. No background score. Overall one time watchable movie. The movie will be boring after the second viewing. Bad movie editing. A minimum of 10 to 15 minutes of scenes could have been cut. This movie would have been better if the unnecessary scenes were cut.

I don't get the message......we are supposed to get message like being a male gynecologist is fine but at the end we got the message like female having male bestie is fine.

I don't get this.....having boyfriend but still enjoying everything else with other man is fine.

Engaging to one man , kissing another and saying I want you in my life as a friend. Kissing someone doesn't means you want him as a friend. What the mindset of bollywood.if boy did the same with girl then everything get changed. Girl don't even want her bf went out with girl . But girl kissed his friend is normal . From the beginning i am supposed to get a good message but everything changed suddenly and fall to the side to feminism.

He lost the 'Male Touch'
gursimranm-2438712 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This might be Ayushmann's most unlikeable character yet. I'm not rooting for him, I'm not being swayed by his charm. Yet, I watched the film and gave it a 9 because his unlikeability was so real to the men I've met and the females around him (and the humour laced with the feminist gaze) made it a refreshing watch. I was worried he'd be glorified and end up with Rakul but no, he understood that he was an asshole and that friendship is a thing!

Throughout the film, you see Ayush's character embody the male gaze we're so accustomed to seeing but near the end we see him deviate from that path. Is he a completely reformed man? No, absolutely not. Like Shah said, he's shown growth but he needs observations for a final decision to be made.

Mr. Stereotype Breaker
itiskashyap15 October 2022
If you loved Article 15 and Badhaai Ho from Ayushmann Khurrana then you're in for a surprise. It's a complete package of comedy packed with an important message for the society. Ayushmann, aka Dr. Uday Gupta, has yet again broken another stereotype which people might not have even thought of. The punchlines have their own affect on the audience and keep them engaged throughout the film. Special mention to Shefali Shah and Sheeba Chaddha for their brilliant performance. The director Anubhuti Kashyap has projected a masterpiece which will be know for all the right reasons.

Worth every rupee spent.

Stop normalizing extra-marital affairs! Stop normalizing people going out of their relationships and kissing someone else, and later becoming "good friends"!
kakmud11 December 2022
The movie very conveniently shows something which is neither the demand of the script, nor is required in any other form - the actress kissing someone else despite the fact that she is in a relationship and about to get married! Later, the movie ends with these two becoming "good friends" and the actress' fiancée being aware and totally cool about the her kissing someone less.

Not sure what agenda this serves in the movie but actors need to take a concious stand to call out such morally corrupt bits, specially when they have now real impact on the script of the movie. The least they can do is add a trigger warning.

Absolutely loved it...!
PANDIAN12062123 December 2022
First thing that inspires us is of sheeba chaddha's character, who's thought provoking role keeps us entertaining all over the movie... Shefali Shah's matured and method acting as a strict & understanding doctor is a pleasant wind that carries the soul of a movie... Ayushman's relatable role of struggle, patience, love& responsibility does a complete man of substance act that strikes the chord at right places .. Rakul's cheerful, bubbly character shines all the way with her mesmerizing smile, indeed makes u feel like a perfect gynae doctor in every hospital that needs a presence... With remaining characters crispy performances Anubhuti direction is solid and holds the ground despite lagging in half time thus depicating the pain and gain of in a women perspective... A must see verdict for family audiences.

Kind of a coming of age story with incoherent character development and some funny moments.
nobody_knows123415 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Final verdict - Not really worth the time.

The Good :

1. The progression of the story was at a a good pace where you see Ayushman's character starting out as sort of an inconsiderate male chauvinist, then slowly learning a few things about life, women and how important the role of a doctor is in people's lives. He eventually comes out on the other side. By the end of the movie, he becomes somebody who you'd at the very least respect and at best even admire.

2. Unlike Anek, this movie does not come off as preachy and it tries to send it's message via storytelling, instead of weird out of place one off speeches.

3. Everybody acted really well. While the story doesn't exactly have way too complicated scenes where the actors have to show the depth of their acting, everybody did what was required of them very well.

The Bad: 1. Like many Bollywood movies, the love story pushed in this one also was sort of unnecessary and didn't exactly add anything of value to the main plot.

2. I had a really hard time understanding the characters in this one. For eg., Ayushman starts off as the kind of guy who doesn't listen to women, but he listens whenever he is shamed or bullied by other women. He even seeks their approval. It's like he is a male chauvinist who also cares too much about what women think of him at the same time and tries to please them at times. A little paradoxical. Rakul Preet Singh's character basically cheated on her fiance and yet somehow the director tried to paint her as a good person.

3. Shefali Shah seems underutilized in the movie. She is probably the actor with the most potential in the entire starcast of this movie. It seems like the director saw "Delhi Crime" season 2 and asked her basically to do the same one dimensional authoritarian woman here as well. I'd have been more interested in her story than the weird time wasting love story.

4. The movie has subplots that really go nowhere and add no value. About 20 mins could have been easily trimmed without losing much of the main plot.

The Ugly: 1. The movie has basically a "women can do no wrong" undertone and tries too hard to portray every one of them as basically a person with good intentions. It does so at the cost of making the male characters look as either extremely flawed or just downright weak.

2. At one point, an underage character says "I'm not ashamed of falling in love, but I'm ashamed of being stupid". This is horrible messaging. I don't want a 16 year old to think they're falling in love with a guy in his late 30s. The 16 yr old in this case is just a victim of being groomed and it taken advantage of. They should see it as such.

Surprisingly very little mansplaining
Rajit_thebingewatcher19 October 2022
Pick a male character who is confused with what he wants in real life, who thinks the world is not fair to him. Add his middle class family and a side kick. Add a female lead who comes as an angel to tell him actually what's wrong with him. Sprinkle social messaging and light hearted comedy . Congratulations you have recipe ready for ayushman khurana movie. This movie is no different.

A MBBS pass out dying to get admission in ortho accidentally lands into gynecology and slowly understands the concept of patriarchal privilege. It's not ayushmans best but a watchable movie.

Siba shines as her mother , the best character arch provided and she does the work flawlessly.surprisingly rakul has been given a deeper role in this movie. Loved the ending lot more similar to his previous movie Bala.

Doctor G Movie Review: This one is a solid prescription for entertainment TIMES OF INDIA The Times of India, TNN, Updated: Oct 14, 2022, 03.28 PM ISTCritic's Rating: 4.0/5 Doctor G Story: Dr Uday Gupta, aspires to specialize in orthopaedics, but much to his strong dislike, he lands up being the only male in the gynaecology department of a medical college in Bhopal. He takes it up, but soon finds himself caught in a series of hilarious situations and incidents. Will the experience make him better doc and a finer human - forms the crux of this medical campus comedy.

Doctor G Review: 'Jo cheez mere paas hai hi nahi, uska ilaaj kaise karoon' is a line that you'd never expect to hear from a doctor. Except probably this one - the funny, quirky, confused Doctor G (Dr Uday Gupta) played by Ayushmann Khurrana. And of course, another trait that stands out in this doc is how he's comfortably unaware of his chauvinism and patriarchal beliefs. His world revolves around the stree-rog vibhaag of the medical college, though what he is desperately waiting for is to find an exit route from there.

Different story
shama_musani21 October 2022
Leave it to Ayushmann to always come out with something different, yet enjoyable. I always look forward to watching his movies, because you know you will be seeing something that has not been done before. My husband and I really enjoyed watching this light hearted movie, which was funny, but also had its tear jerking moments. The music wasn't the best, which could have added to the overall movie experience, however the story and execution made up for it. The supporting cast was also fantastic from Shefali to Sheeba, and Rakul Preet also did a decent job. We really liked the character of Dr. Jenny as well. Definitely a great watch!

A Unique Subject With A Lousy Execution
skmenon199316 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Doctor G directed by Anubhuti Kashyap, penned by Sumit Saxena starring Ayushmann Khurrana , Rakul Preet Singh , Shefali Shah in lead role.

Plot of the Movie

Uday wants to enrol in orthopaedic course but he gets gynaecology course. With utmost disinterest he somehow tries to absorb the interest and there a twist comes to his life where his decisions, his vision changes & how Uday follows the unliked profession forms the rest part of the movie.

After watching Dream Girl, Bala, Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, I had vouched on Ayushman on his script selection, so that was one reason to pull me to the big screen. From film trailer it looked to be humorous, so that was an add on factor to watch the movie.

Analysis of the Movie.

The 1st half was as per the main plot where we could see Uday struggling with his disliked profession. Aaysuhman had given an ok performance. In many areas dialogue delivery was not clearly audible.

Rakul Preet Singh as his friend cum senior student beautifully portrayed her character. Shefali Shah as the strict HOD, teacher had also given a notable performance.

As the 1st half was well gone, the 2nd half was altogether different. The sub plot of under age pregnancy, abortion etc swapped from the main plot and it puzzled me that how it able to relate with the main plot.

Climax could have been better designed. Overall, an average movie watchable film.

A humorous take off on the misadventures of a gynecologist doctor
madanmarwah27 December 2022
An amusing movie during most of the runtime about an MBBS doctor who desperately wants to become an orthopaedician but fate has other plans. Due to lack of seats he has no option but to reluctantly agree to become a gynecologist, a job which he hates.( He keeps saying that he would find it difficult to treat a body part he doesn't posess.) Some scenes of his initial discomfort and embarrassment have been done well. One cannot get too much into the technical issues involved and it is only fair to treat the movie as escapist entertainment. Lead actor Ayushmann Khurana is not new to playing characters caught in embarrassing situations. He has done it in some movies with success. He plays this character very well too. Director Anubhuti Kashyap (Anuraag's sister) has made a fairly interesting movie and has managed to maintain a smooth flowing and believable narrative. ( I say this because I could see the movie in one sitting). On a serious note a subplot about a medical termination of pregnancy and its related issues is effectively interwoven in the main plot. Ayushmann is good as usual in depicting the confused young man pushed into a job he doesn't like. Some good support comes from seasoned artists Shefali Shah as a strict senior doctor and Sheeba Chaddha as the single mom. Rakulpreet as the doctor with a soft corner for colleague Ayushmann is charming as usual.

It felt rushed and at times idiotic
jvpxpbmfx12 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The beginning of the film was amazing, it felt like they were genuinely trying to be funny and create an interesting story but then they just ruined everything. I think they forgot what the movie was about, initially they were focusing on his struggles of becoming a gynecologist and that honestly was hilarious, and then out of nowhere they decided to turn it into a romantic comedy movie. With just one song they built up their romance and first kissing scene and breakup I guess, even though there was literally no sign of them falling for each other before the song and then they decided that wasn't enough and they needed more to the story. They added a young girl getting pregnant, and the guy not willing to take any responsibility. This part felt wrong to me, it would have been a really good teaching opportunity for the film, but they decided to rush this part as well. Our hero doesn't do anything to prevent his friend from molesting her, and then when she gets pregnant he doesn't inform the police or do anything to help the girl. He literally just sides with the rapist and well helps him rectify the situation, by covering for him and lying about her age and then the worst of it all, he just leaves her with him after he says "he has figured something out", he didn't bother to ask wtf that thing was, he just left without asking any questions, even though in the previous scene the actual gynecologist said if they do anything it could be fatal for her. He literally did nothing to help her and in a sense he's equally to be blamed for what happened to her. He's like 35 and she's not even 18 so it is definitely his responsibility to advice her to stay away from that guy after he figured out his intentions (we learn of this in the first couple minutes of the film). In the end he doesn't get any sort of punishment, and doesn't even feel bad for what he did. Not a good movie and the writers should think about what they did.

A one time watch
damnitkejru16 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Loose script.

They tried to break as many stereotypes as possible in this movie - male gynac, single woman dating, male-female being friends only but that does not hide the fact that the script was poorly written and ending does not feel satisfying at all.

Expected better from Ayushman Khurrana's movies especially when we have watched films like Andhadhun.

Characters like Chaddi was not used properly and his story was left incomplete. Even if he wasn't there in the movie, it would have been fine. We didn't even get closure on his story.

Well, all I can say it's a one time watch with some good scenes.

A necessary watch
critiquerimdb15 October 2022
Doctor G is a dramedy with our ever-earnest actor Ayushmann Khurrana at the helm of the narrative, enlightening every "progressive, liberal" man who is comfortable in his "at least I do not raise hands on women" and "they can work now, what more do they want?" level feminism about their casual sexism. Cleverly named "Doctor G", the film disguises as a doctor whose specialisation is in curing misogyny.

I have always appreciated Ayushmann's ability of providing his platform and taking a backseat after passing the mic to the person whose story is being told. Most actors wouldn't do this. They, like our protagonist, feel emasculated when the limelight moves away from them even for a second. In this film, Ayushmann pushes this ability of his to its peak. He enters the world of women and unlike how such stories usually go, he is actually shown passing by the female gaze.

There's a lot to like about Doctor G from its subtlety (which are bound to give you epiphanies if you understand them) to its sharp editing to its strong restraint against melodrama to the expertise with which it pulls off a complete shift in the tone of the film. The film's director, Anubhuti Kashyap, not only deftly manoeuvres the narrative change without making it too jarring as the breezy comedy turns into a dark thriller, but she also expresses a larger message that your growth as a person isn't necessarily all breezy and discrete but rather exists in a continuum during which it reflects in the tougher choices that you make when things get difficult and grim.

However, the film is also marred with noticeable flaws - the most conspicuous of which is the disappointingly terrible and distracting background score by Amit Trivedi, specially in the first half. Even his quirky music in the first half is harsh on the ears and often too loud when it's in juxtaposition with dialogues for us to be able to hear what the actors are speaking. The comedy writing in the first half tries too hard and the punchline setups are often either too predictable or just don't land. Anubhuti is in far more control of the screenplay in the second half and that includes the subtle and unobvious jokes which work really well in it. Watch out for the Zalima moment - easily the funniest sequence of the film.

Talking about the performances, Ayushmann is evergreen and moves the character arc as beautifully as ever. His efforts on the body language deserve a special mention as he retains an easy-to-miss "nerd posture" throughout the film and his comic timing during confrontational scenes is just phenomenal. Shefali Shah is a gem of an actor who deserves every superlative in the dictionary. More than her acting, it's her screen presence which is so bright that sometimes it even manages to almost eclipse a fantastic actor like Ayushmann. Sheeba Chadha is fantastic in her liberal mother role but she isn't given enough to chew in the first half. Rakul does well as the self-possessed but still figuring herself out character. Special mentions for the supporting actors who plays the teen girl and the nurse.

Doctor G on surface seems to be dealing with too many issues for a 2 hour film but its unshakeable conviction for the larger message of feminism and sensitising men towards it strings together all the subplots and makes it work. This film is a necessary watch. Go watch it with your friends and family. Go again if you feel like some aspect of the film didn't make much sense. There's a lot being said beneath the surface which many are bound to miss.
