Leisure Suit Larry creator Al Lowe only found out about the game when it was first announced to the public in May 2018, six months before the game's release. Lowe was not involved in the creative process for the game, but said he would have been willing to help them, if asked. The writers said they were not against the idea of Al's involvement. They simply assumed that Al was retired from making games.
After fan backlash online at the voice casting of Larry, as heard in the first game trailer released, producers decided to recast the role at the last minute with original Larry voice actor Jan Rabson. The other voice actor had already recorded around 25% of Larry's dialogue, at the time the cast change was made.
German video game company Assemble Entertainment acquired the rights from Codemasters to distribute the original Leisure Suit Larry games 1 through 7, plus Magna Cum Laude. Assemble also requested, and were allowed, to produce their own take on a new Leisure Suit Larry title.
This is the first Leisure Suit Larry game in which Larry Laffer is heard "dropping the f-bomb".
After fan comments on how the original ending seemed abrupt, an additional ending to the game was released in late 2019.
