What the H-E-Double hockey sticks is happening?
sloopnp22 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This season has spent way too much time talking about feelings and "I"m here for you", "You haven't been sleeping", "You haven't been eating", "Are you ok?". UGH. Also, many comments are mad Mary chastised Jack for killing Nick, but I think she was mad at the gruesome way he did it, not the kill itself. Still, it was a pretty cool scene and he did do what nobody else seemed to manage to (Seriously, Sam?). The whole Lucifer story should have ended in last season's finale. Sick of it. Too bad they offed Michael, much better story line there. Back to Sam, you can fight and kill monsters but not a normal human with no powers? That was ridiculous. That scene was annoying.

Good story, fun to watch
robbfryatt946 April 2019
Episode has two story lines running in tandem. One with Sam, Dean and jack while the other with Castiel. Both are interesting, one offering a lot of twists and unexpected turns while the other providing a bit if world building and ties in some info from season 9.

Episode had good pacing, kept me interested and i can now start to paint a picture of the finale. The theme of this episode is about "being good men". Please take the negative reviews (at the time of writing) with a grain of salt. Given the context of the episode they are much ado about nothing.

Excited to see what happens next!

I get it

Warning: Spoilers
Ok I know a lot of people are saying oh they got it wrong. This episode was infuriating. How dare they etc. So I'm going to explain some things. 1st Sam didn't just kill Nick because by doing so he would have let his anger consume him and he knew it. 2nd Mary was upset with Jack by the way he killed Nick, Mary witnessed what they all feared in the beginning, Jack letting the darkness of his power consume him. Just like his dad. Now the ending sucked, crappy way for Mary to be killed up there with the Charlie death. I get it though

Extremely annoyed
madreem5 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I'm an avid Supernatural fan, and I've dealt with my fair share of idiotic decisions by the Winchesters, Castiel and company...but THIS episode, for some reason, has really gotten under my skin more so than the others...Anything in excess, can be hazardous or detrimental to oneself....that said, if you believe there's a such thing as being TOO humane, it was definitely on display here...this has bitten them in the ass too many times, and they NEVER learn...How is it that Sam, a man who has murdered more times that's unacceptable even by "hunter" standards, allow himself to be comoromised by Nick? And this is AFTER Sam was fooled once already by Nick, AND after Sam was a millisecond away from putting a bullet in Nick's head in the first place....Then, Sam is suddenly incompetent, gets beat up, called out, and resorts to locking himself in a car and beeping the horn for help....like a chump....Mary, being fully aware of the evilness and therefore usefulness of Nick, has the audacity to guilt Jack into doing what every single one of those idiots should have done in the first place....I almost turned this episode off, because I watched dumb decision after dumb decision....Easily the most annoying episode ever to me, because at this point, they should know better..they have become the dumbest smart people I've ever seen.

The writers are FINALLY rectifying their mistakes
StorieLuver7 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
So clearly in the last few seasons, the writers have decided "Hey, we want to expand this show, what should we do? Let's give our main characters some unnecessary extended family, we'll bring back Mama Mary and throw in a little brother/son figure for good measure!"

*Side note: if the writers wanted to add a little/brother son character so badly, why didn't they just resurrect Adam?*

Admittedly, having additional characters has provided opportunities for new story arcs, but the writers (like me), must've gone back and rewatched the earliest seasons and realized what makes this show what it is: the focus on the relationship between Sam and Dean. Probably the best episode this season was "Prophet and Loss," and that is because that episode is all about the brothers. Mama and Bambi Boy don't appear at all, and Cas is literally phoning it in. When the writers (rightfully) relegate those extra characters to background/nonexistent roles, we get awesome episodes. When the Winchester AREN'T the center of the stories, we get episodes like "Bloodlines" (I'm still pretending that one never happened). Hopefully now the writers are trying to fix their mistake by eliminating the unnecessary characters: Mary is potentially back to the afterlife, where she should've remained, and Bambi Boy is being revealed as the real big bad of the season, whom the Winchesters will then deal with, Dean finally keeping the promise he made when Bambi first appeared, that he would be the one to kill him. I think their realizations about Nick in this episode, the recognition that some people just can't be saved, is foreshadowing what they will soon recognize about Bambi Boy. Final thoughts: Best scenes of this episode were Dean trying to build a mousetrap and a dying Sam whispering to Dean that he's always put him first.

The ending saves an overstuffed episode
CubsandCulture1 November 2021
This episode has the biggest shock in all the final 4 years of the show and I am surprised the writers were as daring as they were with a key character moment. The show manages to make the central development have a deeper resonance in time but the mere shock value is what makes this episode stand out.

Unfortunately the episode has too many moving parts and it is *very* overstuffed. There's two finales in this episode. It is a bit too much.

Nick and Mary...
shwetafabm15 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Probably two of the most annoying and senseless returns. Mary's return just adds nothing. It's hard to believe that she actually does have a relationship with the guys. Maybe its the acting but the delivery is so flat and emotionless. It seems all she does is be a poor emotional crutch to the boys and has no storyline or use of her own. Nick's return was just ridiculous but i think his story is fine, just not worth the screentime. Now archangels can come through the empty? If Lucifer is awake what is the empty being doing? It was one of the more interesting characters. I thought it was ok... But the random spell... The entire existence of Mary and Nick...the Sam almost dying for the millionth time in these past three seasons alone...and the fight scene with Dean where Demons know he might come so i'm just like ugh have they not heard of guns, how many times are we going to have these pointless fights...make it overall very weak. Jack doesn't have a soul... This brings some questions about angels. In S4 and in S13 Anna and Anael talk like they can't feep emotions as an angel but then they do feep emotions and so does Castiel... So its a bit confusing. The whole Cas Anael storyline is... Stupid i suppose, really they just scroll around a shop and find something...

I agree with the bad reviews I have read
songod-950039 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
While the ep had some good scenes, really none were awful in a "man they sucked" way, but Jack being chastised for ending Nick was simply wrong. As many have stated, Mary, Sam and Dean (and even Cas) have killed more people and many less monstrous than Nick (remember the girl who was bit by a werewolf and was turning yet was no monster or threat? Sam wanted to save her, Dean said she couldn't be. He killed her off screen as the episode faded on Sam's stricken face). Okay roasting Nick was extreme but people have done worse to people in the name of God and for king. So? Mary had no moral authority to badger Jack.

Is she done for? The word on next ep seems to be no. Or maybe the brothers will think she took off again to be with new Bobby. On foot. In the snow. I dunno...

I'd be surprised if Jack returned to the bunker. He does not need anyone there. He is the most powerful creature on earth (unless Cas gets God to pop in and fix it all). What does he need two humans and an angel for??

Mary's Character needs to go back to where it came from
revba29 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
After reading reviews and viewing this episode, I agree with most of the negative reviews. Mary's character has been a useless one and needs to be removed. I especially like Jack's character and hope that the writers are NOT turning him into the next evil being. Nick's character must be stopped and that is what he was doing before Mary gave her 2 cent remarks.

The Ending
MAYY95 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Mary was exceptionally wrong. Sam, Dean, and she would have killed Nick with their knives or guns. It's absurd to hear her chastise Jack for killing. She has killed so many more times than Jack has ever had time to process. Why the nonsense? Jack was protecting his family. Is this the reasoning to demean the original premise of this great show. Does this thinking help the demise of the show? Mary was causing Jack to become overwhelmed with severe pain by her badgering. Where was her gentleness and calmness to help ease his pain? It was a sad state of affairs.

I love this show been watching for years but I am so sick of almost every episode having a torture scene. Might not be so bad if it wasnt in place of what used to be good writing and excellent acting.

I agree with the negative reviews
tzk125 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I was very irritated with this episode, more than usual. First of all it was annoying when Sam didn't just kill Nick when he had the chance after Nick escaped his cuffs. Sam had every opportunity to just end that severely damaged evil man and didn't. So Nick thanked him by busting him in his head. I actually started rooting for Nick at that point. I mean I know they needed Nick to push the storyline but that was not a good scene cuz Sam has killed for far less and there is obviously no redeeming Nick. Secondly, Mary aggravating Jack like that was also ridiculous. He was the only one who manned up to finally rid the world of this horrible threat and Mary thanked him by telling him he was wrong, huh??? I didn't get that, specially since she's also killed for less. What was happening here was extremely confusing so if he snapped and ended her then oh well since she was pretty useless at this point. It felt like she was saying goodbye to Sam and Dean in the episode anyway. I have loved this show since the beginning but that episode was just infuriating!

Please Don't Do This To Jack.
Sam_Ash_767 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
"Supernatural" has had a pretty good season so far, but this episode is by far the worst of them. Since season 13 started I was always hoping that Jack would never be forced to be a villain one way or another. Unfortunately, this exact thing is happening now. This episode was quite messy, a lot of the plot elements seemed to be through together. It had some very funny and good moments (like Dean struggling to set up Mouse Trap), but overall it was a difficult watch. One of my least favorite elements of any TV show is changing a fundamentally good person into a villain, unless that person is destined to be evil (like in "Smallville" with Lex Luthor). This show has done it three times now, once with Sam drinking the demon blood in season 4 and again with the Mark Of Cain storyline with Dean in season 10, as well as Castiel being "God" for the season 7 premiere when the leviathans took over him.

Now that Jack's soul has been almost completely destroyed, he is basically evil. He reminds me of soulless Sam from Season 6. This would be a fine story to tell if the show wasn't ending next season. Having a redemption arc like the show did with Sam in season 5 would work, but making him evil now this close to the endgame of this show, it's an awful idea and something that I really hope doesn't happen, although, that end scene makes me think that this is the direction the show is heading in.

Adam has been stuck in the cage for almost 10 seasons now and I've always wanted to see him as "The Big Bad" for the final season of the show since he has a legitimate reason for being angry with the boys, but since the show seems to be heading into this direction of Jack being evil, this is probably not going to happen, which is a big shame because it is definitely a compelling story to tell and something that I and a lot of viewers would love to see unfold.

I'd advise the writers to fix Jack's soul and have a final match where Jack and Adam have to face off somehow, since Jack feels like another brother of the Winchesters who they seem to care much more for than Adam. Please writers, don't ruin one of this show's best characters. Do not ruin Jack.

How often can main characters allow themselves to be used before learning from it?
ofbodin-966-4855205 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The episode started fairly well. Nick is always a welcome addition to any episode, and is a good, well established villain. His inability to go on after being free from Lucifer was a dark and interesting twist that most didn't see coming.

That being said: You have to wonder just how many times the Winchester brothers are going to allow extremely dangerous prisoners to get within melee range and catch them off guard. It's a shame that the Winchesters have a fondness for looking away from the biggest threats in the universe, always allowing themselves to lose the upper hand, at this point more times than I can count.

Additionally it seems like Mary is completely unable to remotely gauge any situation that involves emotional instability, as she just kept pushing and guilting a possibly soulless Nephalem over the edge. Hopefully this is the end for her, as she has burdened the show for far too many episodes already. After her first season she's been nothing but dead weight and played no really useful part except that of being the emotional crutch for her damaged sons. Their emotional dependency on her is only overshadowed by their inability to keep a prisoner for more than a few hours.

Seriously, how incautious, inattentive, negligent, unobservant and unaware is this family? It's a miracle they're still alive!

Lucifer Plays The Dumb Winchesters Again
Johnny_West5 April 2019
Once again, the now-human Nick/Lucifer has escaped from prison. Why don't the Winchesters shoot him on sight? Because they are too dumb. This time Lucifer kidnaps Donatello the fat barf-bag "prophet," so he can get a meeting with his son Jack. The dumb Winchesters allow Jack to get used, because they are too stupid to figure out that Lucifer is using them.

As usual, the Winchesters blow every chance to stop Lucifer, and it is down to Jack putting his soul on the line again. In spite of the stupidity of the Winchester family, Jack fights for good.

Jack is the only one that did not fumble the ball, and he actually used his brain and knew what to do to save the day. Yet Mary Winchester, the alcoholic absentee Mom is putting a guilt trip on Jack. Mary Winchester is the last person on this show that should be taking any shots at anyone. She is hardly a team player, and she is never around for her children. Mary Winchester judging Jack made me wonder if the soul of Lucifer had gone into her? Or is she just a total loser??

Where exactly was the shadow in the empty while Lucifer's awake waiting for nick to bring him back. Also how did Lucifer know what spell (as if Lucifer would have any knowledge about a spell to leave from there) and how to execute it perfectly.

I love Supernatural, but this is awful
kost528 August 2020
I love this show, it's my secret indulgence. But the whole Nick thread is complete nonsense and really frustrates me. None of it makes any sense, it's almost as though they've run out of ideas and are making things up as they go.

Sigh
angry-scotsman-350-9958686 December 2019
Show forgets Dean tortured people for 10 years in hell and was taught by the best. A crucial part of his character. Oh and Jack might be evil again this plot wasn't done to death last season. And Sam dies, again. What's even the point when we know he's back the same episode (which he was). I have dropped this show twice before (season 8 and earlier in 14) and I'm only back because it's ending, otherwise this episode would have made me drop it again.

Boring as hell
truthfinderalways29 December 2022
I had plan to watch these episodes of supernatural on a train journey so that I don't get bored, so i downloaded it on ott as there's download limit on ott i could not download anything else, turned out these episodes are soo boring , soo illogical that i preferred talking strangers and observing outside window rather than waste my time in watching this season and these 2-3 episodes especially, they should change the name of the show to supertorture, i mean imagine u are watching horror thriller action series and u get to see emotional drama, guilt, and more mistakes to overcome that guilt and more guilt by those mistakes and not only by one character but by every, and the brothers are becoming dumber and dumber gone are those days when brother held the final Trump card and turned the table at last moment gave thrills now it's all dumb brother making stupidest mistakes and ultimately somebody else saving them. I just wish no show maker grow this greedy and keep adding water in the story and strech number of seasons and make a good show into some Indian daily soap.

Loong Rant
majo61823 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Almost always, I say I'm gonna leave a comment later and never do (might still go back someday), so I'm sorry for this being absurdly long, but there's just too much I've been keeping in, lol.

Once again i'm debating with how I feel about this episode, cause I really liked it, and was excited about a lot of things. I really didn't know where Nick was going with all that, and found he's scheming good, and feeling once again that he's more disturbing than I can remember feeling Lucifer ever was. Also funny how it started with Dean playing mouse trap, and then all of it kind of being a real life one.

And the end with Jack, which was obvious where it was all going, but still liked it and think it's a plausible way for him to be the next big bad or next in line to save from himself (soulless, not knowing how to deal with things, and accidentally hurting someone so important to them, which apart from the obvious problems with the Winchesters, the guilt probably consuming him).

The problem I have is that everything good, happens out of either rushed and underdeveloped things, or them just acting stupid and out of character for the sake of the plot (I know it's been a long time thing). I mean I get sometimes it'll happen, and some dumb decisions I can just look away. But lately there's just been too many and too obvious.

First, Nick is now human but seems to be presented as equally dangerous as Lucifer, even physically. A long time ago Dean was supposed to be the best at torturing info out of anyone. I get he doesn't want to be that person, so might refrain (all though with a friend in danger, I'm not sure he would), but this last seasons it seems everyone can just take any torture without breaking. Also, they have Castiel who can literally force his way into his mind, to see where Donny is, and to know his plan (Again, I know they've been conveniently making him useless for a while now). The same could say with Jack, not only half-angel, but one of the most powerful beings in existence. Sure they could play longer with the "he's inexperienced and doesn't know how to use/control all his powers still" but that fact that he literally just stepped in to be head-butted and did nothing else. (Also I don't believe Dean would just let him go in on his own, just cause Nick said so). This is even worse, since he could have instantly gone to the boys when they figured the trap, instead of Mary just calling.

Then the boys, casually driving Nick around (who has escaped many times), with nothing but a pair of handcuffs. Just the two of them, knowing they're going to have to separate, after which Sam proceeds to step out of the car and take his eyes off of Nick. I do have to say, I did enjoy Dean fighting the demons. But after, Sam deciding NOT to kill Nick, like what? I know it wasn't about a moral thing, or not giving into his anger, since he hasn't actively been looking for revenge, his given him many chances, Nick's actively trying to kill them, and it wouldn't be the first time they take care of a human threat, also Sam literally says "not yet" moments before, knowing he has to be dealt with. After that, he gets hit in the head with a rock, and under other circumstances I'd be happy they take it seriously, but here... the heavily experienced hunter, who has fought through many severe injuries and getting constantly hit in the head before, forgets how to defend himself from a, again, beaten-up human!! And then the "we don't even want to move him" and "we're waiting for an ambulance", yeah, that's a convenient first too.

Now, i'm glad with how the whole Nick thing went on. I don't think it was necessary for him to be brought back, (especially cause I thought that the "deus ex machina - the blade didn't kill him" was going to be relevant for Michael), but I really found him interesting and was invested in his story. From his wanting "justice", to spiraling, to realizing he actually likes being sadistic, and wanting to bring Lucifer back to live without consequences. Although the last one was not really plausible, since how did they know how to do it so easily, even though nobody knew before about the empty (also why didn't the empty do anything about L being awake, but ok). But I enjoyed it, especially cause they didn't bring him back, and it was just a set up for Jack unravelling.

Finally, the real problem I had, and have been having for a long time: Mary. Ididn't think they could make her anymore unlikable.

When they first brought her back, I was worried how she would fit in, but was excited for the boys (especially Dean). Then I disliked her for constantly abandoning the boys, the "I need some time" and the whole MoL thing. But for a while I was like, ok maybe it's cool in a sense that IRL we long for someone/something and when we get it, it's not how we thought it would be. We all (boys and viewers) had expectations about Mary cause she was barely in their lives, and was presented as badass, but maternal, loving and (through John and Dean) almost a saint. So hey, I was down with it. But then she continued to put everything before her sons, she had no real development, there was no visible changes in the boys or their lives, and from being one of the best hunters (also wierd, but at least she had that), she became whatever, and a totally boring character.

The worst part is the acting wasn't even good. Like here, when instead of desperately shouting, you can barely hear her repeatedly say "jack, stop" in an almost flat tone. When Jack's finally done, she starts directly judging him (although she's done very questionable things too, like with MoL), even after him being visibly worried about what she's going to say. Now I do get that she wasn't mad about Jack killing him, rather then the form he did cause he was being cruel (I would of liked it a little longer or more visually stunning to cement his cruelty, but maybe that's just me), and that of course it's worrying cause it proves he's without his soul and impulsive and dangerous. But then she starts repeatedly telling him how he was wrong, and as a seasoned hunter not only failed to see the signs that she was in danger, but kept pushing him.

I mean, after asking him to take her home his answer is "I will. I will, just... tell me it's okay", that would've been enough to make me wary, but then he hits her with the "are you gonna tell them?" with that expression? Yeah that's where you shut up, tell him he's right, and deal with it when you're in a safer place. Like come on, you know they are the most important people in his life (with Cass), and you are saying you are willing to do something that, in his head, would compromise that relationship and the way they look at him. And as if that is not enough, you're going to chase and badger him, when he's repeatedly telling you to leave him alone, stupidly failing again to see that he's in pain? Yeah, great plan irritating an already unstable Jack. That frustrated me beyond mesure, can't imagine him. They forget that soul or not, he's been here 2 years, without a childhood and normal interactions, of course he doesn't know how to deal with emotions, especially anger.

Anyway, from the way she was talking to the boys throughout the episode (like a farewell), I knew something would happen to her.

Now, that black screen and Jack whispering "Mary?"... chills!
