In 1984, Columbia Records president Walter Yetnikoff called Leonard Cohen into his office in New York City and told him, “Look, Leonard, we know you’re great, but we don’t know if you’re any good.” The tireless musician had just presented his label with his seventh studio album, “Variations,” which was a collection of songs like any other except it wasn’t: this was something more special, more spiritual. This was the record on which Cohen placed “Hallelujah,” a song he wrote over 80 draft verses for, with an estimated 250 versions of every single line. Yetnikoff didn’t get it. The album was never released in the U.S.
“Hallelujah” might bring to mind that ironic, quite comical incident with Yetnikoff and Columbia considering just how far that one word traveled thanks to Cohen, but the song has taken on such a life of its own that it might have...

With Netflix currently going through a rare drought in terms of adding new content, competitors like Hulu and Disney Plus are continuing to put out fresh material to keep us busy. The former, in particular, are adding some great movies and series for July 13th to 19th, including The Weekend, Into the Dark and documentary Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love, on top of recently released critical favorites like Palm Springs.
From today, Hulu users can catch up on My Scientology Movie, the Louis Theroux-produced look at the controversial organization, as well as the Canadian drama The Rest of Us, Aisling Chin-Yee’s well-regarded directorial debut from 2019. On Wednesday the 15th, meanwhile, we’re getting The Weekend, wherein a comedian finds herself caught between her ex, his new girlfriend and another guest, leading to some predictably complicated farce.

As we get deeper into the summer, entertainment offerings are bound to start slimming – particularly in this pandemic era. Perhaps there’s no greater example of the oncoming drought than Amazon Prime’s list of new releases for July 2020.
Though the new options may be few and far between on Amazon this month, at least they pack a bit of a punch. In the case of Hanna season 2, that punch is quite literal. Esme Creed-Miles returns as the titular precocious super soldier. You can check out our review here. Beyond that, there are two intriguing Amazon original movies. The first is the Rosamund Pike-starring Radioactive and that arrives on July 24. Then there is the Dave Bautista film My Spy on July 26.
With HBO Max now on the scene, Amazon Prime is sure to lose some of its library titles. That can already be seen in the relatively sparse offerings for July.

The theatrical market for documentary films is in “robust shape,” with 2019 proving to be a strong year for the genre after an exceptional 2018, reports Oli Harbottle, head of distribution and acquisitions at leading U.K. documentary outfit Dogwoof.
Harbottle says 2019 was always going to struggle to match 2018’s “blockbuster” year, which saw the release of hits “Rbg,” “Free Solo,” “Three Identical Strangers” and “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” All four surpassed $10 million in ticket sales at the U.S. box office, with “Free Solo” taking nearly $30 million worldwide.
“The big question was whether 2018 was a weird anomaly and a bubble with those four films,” says Harbottle. “I would say thankfully no. It looks like the market is in robust shape in terms of documentaries that have been able to deliver at the box office this year.”

This weekend, “Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love” (Roadside Attractions), veteran documentarian Nick Bloomfield’s retelling of the intense relationship between an iconic folk artist and the woman who inspired him, was the only notable specialized opener. It joined the list of recent documentaries that are saving the specialized box office.
The challenges to core theaters continue, as films that once would have been their mainstay opt for wider, mainstream release, from “Booksmart” (United Artists) and “Late Night” (Amazon) to “Yesterday” (Working Title/Universal) and this weekend, smart horror title “Midsommar” (A24). Apart from a rash of documentaries, only “The Last Black Man in San Francisco” (A24) and the less spectacular “Wild Rose” (Neon) are gaining significant traction from arthouse audiences.

Two romances anchor Nick Broomfield’s documentary “Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love.” Both bloomed on the sparkling Greek island Hydra, many years apart. One was the great love and muse of singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen’s life, Marianne Ihlen, the subject of at least five of his songs, including “So Long Marianne” and “Hey, That’s No Way to Say Goodbye.” The other was Broomfield’s own, more brief affair at age 20 with Ihlen, who was 12 years his senior.
Ihlen stayed friends with both men through the years. As she battled leukemia at the end of her life in 2016, her friend Jan Christian Mollestad reached out to Cohen to let him know she was near the end. Cohen wrote an email back that Mollestand reads to Ihlen on video in “Marianne & Leonard”:

As rich as the field of documentary is, the realities of filmmaking usually prevent films from achieving the same intimacy, fluidity, depth, and scope as classic written memoirs. With Nick Broomfield’s “Marianne and Leonard: Words of Love,” the stars have aligned, with the perfect match of filmmaker and subject, a fortuitous discovery of lost footage, and a narrative spanning a lifetime, to create a film that not only embodies the best of the written memoir but is even richer because it can include musical performances and wonderfully evocative period footage.

The pair met on the rocky Greek island of Hydra in 1960. Their romance inspired countless Cohen songs – and now a poignant documentary by Nick Broomfield
In November 2016, the singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen, renowned for his plaintive ballads, died a few months after the woman who inspired many of them, his Norwegian lover and muse, Marianne Ihlen. Theirs had been a large and chaotic romance that was in many respects a product of the particular times (the 1960s) and the specific place (the Greek island of Hydra) in which they met. The relationship’s legacy was a catalogue of classic songs – So Long Marianne, Hey, That’s No Way to Say Goodbye, Bird on the Wire – a great deal of heartache, but also a lasting sense of the creative power of love.
All of this the documentary maker Nick Broomfield explores in his tender, funny and hauntingly moving new film Marianne and Leonard: Words of Love.

"Poets - they're just elusive creatures... Who are married to their muse." Roadside Attractions has debuted an official trailer for a documentary titled Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and stopped by a number of other fests including Thessaloniki, Sun Valley, and Cph:dox. Made by veteran documentary filmmaker Nick Broomfield, this film takes an in-depth look at the relationship between the late folk musician Leonard Cohen and his Norwegian muse Marianne Ihlen. The two first met in the 1960s and spent time on Hydra in Greece. While they weren't always together, their friendship remained strong throughout their entire lives. Featuring never-before-seen footage shot by Broomfield, and conversations with many people who knew them. This seems like a lovely look at the power of love, and how an artist is influenced by his muse, someone incomparable in every way. Here's the...

Nick Broomfield’s longtime friendship with Marianne Ihlen is the point of entry for “Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love,” which tells the story of the ’60s romance between Norwegian divorcee Ihlen and Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen. It was a relationship that cast a long shadow in both their lives, as well as in popular culture, though its sporadic nature also spoke to the era’s Free Love ethos and Cohen’s short-attention-span romanticism in particular. Broomfield, a dogged protagonist in films like “Tales of the Grim Sleeper” and “Tracking Down Maggie,” to name just a couple, pretty much keeps out of the way here, letting plentiful archival footage and a few latter-day interviewees (but neither Ihlen nor Cohen) tell the tale.
Since Cohen’s relentlessly self-reflective life has been amply documented, and Ihlen’s considerably less so, much of this ostensible dual portrait ends up being a recap of Cohen...

Roadside Attractions has acquired North American rights to Nick Broomfield’s documentary “Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love,” which premiered last month at the Sundance Film Festival.
Broomfield’s film focuses on the love story between the late Canadian folk singer Leonard Cohen and his Norwegian muse, Marianne Ihlen. Indie distributor Roadside Attractions announced on Thursday that it has picked up the North American rights to director Nick Broomfield’s documentary, “Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love,” following its world premiere at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival.
The film, which was in the Documentary Premieres section at the festival, follows the enduring love story between legendary Canadian folk singer Leonard Cohen and his Norwegian muse, Marianne Ihlen.
“Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love” is billed as one of Broomfield’s most personal and romantic films.
