For some fans, the arc of X-Men as mutant outsiders fighting for their right to fit in, be represented, or at best, to co-exist beside humans, feels more real than the world they live in. As such, Professor Xavierʼs never-ending struggle to mediate, guide, lead, train, shelter, and sometimes pioneer the war against injustice and suffering also resonates among fans who see themselves as outsiders.

In Charles Xavier, the Billy Jean singer saw himself while the rest of the world associated themselves with the remainder of the X-Men.

It is inherently foolish to disregard the iconography of Michael Jackson in modern pop culture and music.

When Netflix released its latest major data set on Thursday — its second under the name of What We Watched: A Netflix Engagement Report — animated features continued to demonstrate a major impact for the streamer. Of the top 100 most viewed titles in the period of review, from July to December 2023, 33 were animated, bringing in a total of 1,087,600,000 views.
That being said, titles licensed from other studios continued to heavily overshadow Netflix originals, in terms of impact. Of the 33 animated titles in the Top 100, five were produced by Netflix; the Adam Sandler starrer Leo ranked the highest at #3 overall, coming in with 96 million views. Others that made the cut included The Monkey King, Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, the Oscar-nominated Nimona, The Sea Beast and Back to the Outback.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 wrapped up with a major Shadow tease and, last month, we learned that Keanu Reeves will lend his voice to the character (making countless fan casts a reality in the process).
Today, a first look at the villain-turned-anti-hero has been revealed (via SFFGazette.com) thanks to a promo banner for the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The titular character is shown alongside Tails and Knuckles, with Shadow looming large in the background.
We'd hoped a trailer might be released alongside If when that opened in theaters last weekend; sadly, there was no sign of Sonic, so we're hoping the sneak peek races online sooner rather than later.
Shadow the Hedgehog debuted in 2001's Sonic Adventure 2. Created by Dr. Eggman's grandfather, Professor Gerald Robotnik, Shadow was designed as the Ultimate Life Form, with abilities surpassing those of Sonic. His creation aimed to unlock the secrets of immortality...

It was recently announced that Warner Bros./Legendary are officially moving forward with a follow-up to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, with writer Dave Callaham enlisted to pen the script for the untitled movie.
There was no mention of a potential director at the time, but it seems Adam Wingard, who helmed The New Empire and its predecessor Godzilla vs. Kong, was set to return.
Was being the operative word.
According to THR, Wingard is no longer in line to direct the project. Though the report stresses that he didn't have a deal in place, anyway, it sounds like he was tentatively attached prior to a parting of ways, which is described as "amicable and stemming from timing issues," with the door remaining "open for a future return."
Wingard is now expected to turn his attention to his next project, a new original feature that he wanted to tackle...

Sony Pictures initially planned spin-off films featuring Spider-Man villains after “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” (2014) but abandoned the idea due to its reception. In February 2015, Sony collaborated with Marvel Studios to integrate Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
This partnership led to the release of “Spider-Man: Homecoming” (2017), “Spider-Man: Far From Home” (2019), and “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (2021). Meanwhile, Sony independently developed “Venom” (2018) and its sequel “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” (2021), along with “Morbius” (2022), which featured connections to the MCU through mid-credits scenes.
Additionally, Sony’s animated “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” (2023) is linked to the Sony Spider-Man Universe (Ssu). Most Ssu films received negative reviews, with “Venom,” “Morbius,” and “Madame Web” (2024) being criticized, although “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” received mixed reviews. The franchise earned $1.6 billion globally, but “Morbius” and “Madame Web” were commercial disappointments.

When we talk about perfect casting choices -- even outside the realm of superhero movies -- J.K. Simmons as The Daily Bugle head honcho J. Jonah Jameson in "Spider-Man" has to be right up there with the best of the best. Simmons so perfectly encapsulated the role that he has, essentially, been kept on as just about every version of the character throughout the Marvel multiverse, as evidenced by "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse." But before Simmons signed on for the role, he was seen as perfect for another, very different role in Spidey's rogues gallery.

Nicolas Cage Confirmed to Reprise Spider-Man Noir Role in Live-Action Series - Main Image
Nicolas Cage will reprise and expand his role as Spider-Man Noir in a new live-action series that will be released on Prime Video and MGM+. This will mark the first live-action adaptation of the character who previously appeared in the two successful “Spider-Verse” animated films.
Nicolas Cage added another superhero role to his credits when he lent his voice to Spider-Man Noir in both 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and last year’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which earned an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature. In both films, he voiced a version of Peter Parker from Earth-90214 that served as New York’s web-slinging vigilante during the 1930s.

Spider-Man Noir may have spent the past few years off somewhere staring at matches as they burn, but the hilariously melodramatic Spider-Verse character played by Nicolas Cage will officially return in a new show on MGM+ and Amazon's Prime Video, according to Variety. What's wilder: the show will be live action.
The new show will be called "Noir," and this isn't the first time we've heard about it: the show was first announced back in February 2023, but Cage's casting wasn't confirmed at that time. In fact, a month earlier the beloved actor actually told ScreenRant that he wasn't going to be included in "Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse," a decision he seemed bummed about. "You'd have to ask Sony," he told the outlet when asked about the future of his character. "No one's spoken to me about that ... I wish they would. I love Spider-Man Noir, too. I think that's a great character.

Sony Pictures Entertainment has seen operating income fall nearly 10% for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2024.
The company’s operating income was $808M in dollar terms compared with $894M for the comparable period a year before, which was down 9.6%. Revenues crept up to $10.31B from $10.14B for Fy.
Sony, which is headquartered in Japan, said the Hollywood strikes had impacted its Pictures segment, which comprises TV production, motion pictures and media networks (including streaming).
Whereas in 2023 Sony had suffered from a lack of new theatrical product, this year the increased number and growth at streamer Crunchyroll helped to offset a decrease in series delivered due to the labor action and lower catalog licensing of motion pictures.
On the motion pictures side, full-year revenues were $3.74B, up slightly on the previous year, but TV fell from nearly $4B to just over $3.8B. However, media networks grew from $2.69B to $2.72B.

This year's Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire wasn't exactly a monster hit, but it did manage to take in close to $555 million worldwide on a reported $135 million budget. Now, we have word that a sequel is officially in development, and Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have enlisted a writer to pen the script.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings screenwriter Dave Callaham is going from the Marvelverse to the Monsterverse.
The scribe, known for his action acumen, has been tapped to pen the next installment of Legendary’s Godzilla/Kong monster movie series.
The hiring comes in the wake of the box office success of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which has grossed close to $555 million worldwide. That is the biggest haul since 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, which peaked at $568 million. Empire, which is still in theaters, may also be one of the most profitable (if not the single most profitable) of the five movies in the series, as it only cost $135 million, per sources. Thus Legendary is keen to keep the monster juice flowing.

Bob Iger recently discussed how the MCU is cutting back on its creative work. He mentioned that fans can look forward to about 2 or 3 movies a year and 2 shows. That’s much less than what was initially planned and what we’re used to.
Right now, there are over 30 MCU projects rumored or confirmed to be in the works. But, as Brad Winderbaum recently mentioned, not all of them will actually get made and released.
Recently, rumors have been circulating, sparked by the scooper and leaker MyTimeToShineHello, suggesting that Donald Glover is being considered for a writing role.
The leaker didn’t specify which project the studio is eyeing Glover for, but he does have ties to Disney and Marvel.
Donald Glover is also someone Marvel is interested in, as a writer!

Exclusive: Here’s some buzzy casting. Greta Lee (Past Lives) and Kingsley Ben-Adir (Bob Marley: One Love) are in negotiations to star in director and producer Louis Leterrier’s (Now You See Me) upcoming sci-fi horror film 11817.
Both actors are on a roll. The former is coming off a string of hits including Oscar nominee Past Lives, Apple TV drama The Morning Show and Sony’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, while Ben-Adir’s last two movies couldn’t have gone much better in the shape of box office hits Bob Marley: One Love and Barbie.
In 11817, inexplicable forces trap a family of four inside their house indefinitely. As both modern luxuries and life or death essentials begin to run out, the family must learn how to be resourceful to survive and outsmart who – or what – is keeping them trapped.
Additional casting is underway on the project, which is based on a script by Matthew Robinson.

Universal and Illumination’s smash The Super Mario Bros Movie finishes No. 1 to make it a wrap on Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament for 2023. While the industry is still coming out of Covid and the aftermath of the strikes, there’s no question about the major motion picture studios’ embrace of the theatrical downstream model; steamers such as Amazon and Apple realize the power of it too.
Last year’s wild ride saw the buckling of superhero movies, though Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse underscored fanboys’ hunger for something different in the genre. The year also showed that longtime box office emperor Disney can lose its clothes sometimes — in 2023 it was its overextension and hasty execution of IP Wish, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Haunted Mansion and The Marvels. Barbie and Oppenheimer, meanwhile, showed that perhaps the biggest box office weekends are best programmed with two tentpoles in the heart of summer.

After debuting early last weekend, Universal’s The Fall Guy expanded to 78 overseas markets during its sophomore session, adding $25.4M for a running total of $36.9M at the international box office. That’s in line with Bullet Train and above The Lost City at the same point in release. Globally, the David Leitch-directed action romance is at $65.4M.
This is a fun picture with positive scores and exits so there’s hope for some legs here and playability throughout upcoming holidays. Still, an expensive movie, it came in slightly below projections domestically.
Internationally, the UK was a No. 1 debut with a strong $4.4M from 1,400 screens. Odeon was the top-performing circuit, and Everyman registered a 9% share, 3.1 points higher than their average for the year. Performance across 51 IMAX screens made up 7.6% of the total. The weekend result is well above Bullet Train and The Lost City. Monday is a holiday.
Mexico opened to $2.5M at No.

Last year, this time around, the box office worldwide was no less than a ferocious battlefield. Releasing in July were two legendary films that were to change the course of the entertainment landscape: Oppenheimer and Barbie. Incredibly diverse and different, both ended up becoming blockbusters with the WWII epic bagging seven Oscars and dozens of other prestigious accolades.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
While it left behind Barbie in the race for awards, it was also defeated by the pink odyssey at the box office. And as per recent updates, the movie suffers another blow, as far as revenues are concerned, by being defeated by Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Defeats Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer A still from Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer
Last year might not have been as great of a year for every major theatrical release, but it certainly was for the likes of Oppenheimer and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

Rotten Tomatoes has shared an updated ranking of the "300 Best Movies of All Time" which they say are "reviewed and selected by Tomatometer-approved critics and Rotten Tomatoes users."
At #1? 1997's L.A. Confidential, a movie which has little to nothing in common with superheroes! However, comic book adaptations do factor into the list, with 11 in total making the cut.
According to the review aggregator, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is the best superhero movie ever, coming in at #21. Released in 2018, the Sony Pictures title grossed $384.3 million and won a "Best Animated Feature" Oscar in 2019 (making it the first non-Disney/Pixar movie to do so since 2011).
Also included in the list are The Dark Knight (#51), Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (#81), Spider-Man: No Way Home (#128), Avengers: Endgame, (#142), Iron Man (#145), Black Panther (#225), Logan (#228), Guardians of the Galaxy (#254), Thor: Ragnarok (#274), and The Avengers (#286).
Needless to say, we're sure these selections will generate some discussion!

Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament is back. While studios during Covid wildly embraced the theatrical day-and-date model when cinemas were closed, they soon realized there’s nothing more profitable than a theatrical release and the downstreams that come with it. If anything, theatrical is the advertisement for a movie’s longevity in subsequent home entertainment windows. Entering the conversation in 2023 were the streamers, such as Apple, who have also realized the necessity of theatrical to eventize their movies. The financial data pulled together here for Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster Tournament is culled by seasoned and trusted sources.

Co-starring Oscar Isaac, the thriller comes from director Panos Cosmatos, whose ultraviolent Mandy was one of the best films released in 2018. The screenplay was written by Andrew Kevin Walker, best known for his work on Se7en and more recently, David Fincher’s The Killer. Adam McKay is among the producers.
Per the official logline, Flesh of the Gods follows the married couple Raoul (Isaac) and Alex (Stewart) who “descend each evening from their luxury skyscraper condo and head into an electric nighttime realm of ‘80s LA. In a statement, Cosmatos added that the film “inhabits the liminal realm between fantasy and nightmare.

X-Men ’97 once again hinted at an established Marvel concept, that of fixed points in timelines, famously dubbed as canon events in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. These points in time are usually events that cannot be undone no matter what and are destined to occur across timelines. If the X-Men ’97 universe indeed exists in the same multiverse as the MCU, it is possible that the show could have hinted at the thing event that Wolverine failed to save his world in Deadpool & Wolverine.

Movie music can be insanely operatic, which is why some composers have been able to perform their fan-favorite scores in concerts. Daniel Pemberton, who has been known to do some very dramatic tunes that easily lent themselves to movie trailers, has piggybacked his recent announcement of his U.K. tour with a tour in the United States. The composer has contributed to the abstract and moody tone of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

"Anyone But You" became a surprise hit when it arrived in theaters back in December 2023. In an age where everyone is used to superhero movies and the odd horror flick doing well at the box office, surely a rom-com starring two lesser-known stars whose careers are only just starting to get going wasn't going to hit? But hit, it did. "Anyone But You" passed box office milestones, making an impressive $216 million worldwide on just a $25 million budget. Oh, and it was also based on a William Shakespeare play.
It might seem strange to think that a loose adaptation of the Bard's "Much Ado About Nothing," could be so surprisingly popular, but perhaps "Anyone But You" is ushering in a new era of cool Shakespeare adaptations, á la Leonardo DiCaprio with "Romeo + Juliet" back in the mid-'90s. Updated, 12:50 Pm: Ishana Night Shyamalan’s debut film is on the move, again. And the new date is a familiar one. Two months after Warner Bros. shuffled The Watchers back by a week to the June 14-16 Fathers Day frame, the pic is headed back to its original June 7 date.
It’ll have some action-packed company that Friday, going against Sony’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die, the long-gestating fourth film in the nearly 30-year-old franchise. Lionsgate’s The Crow remake also was set for June 7, but that pic flew away from the date about three weeks ago and now is set for August 23.
Warners Bros. is hoping to cater to a female audience with The Watchers.
Also opening wide on June 7 is Vertical Entertainment’s The Exorcism directed by Joshua John Miller.

The Transformers One trailer debuted online, and fans are not having it with the animation of the film. There were a lot of expectations from the movie by the fans, who had largely expected a more serious look at the origins of the character of Orion Pax, the identity that Optimus Prime had before he received the matrix of leadership.
A still from Transformers One
However, the tone of the film is more child-friendly and comedic than serious, which caused a lot of fans to be immediately turned off of the film. The animation is also something that has gotten fans up in arms about the film, which is being compared to something that might air directly on TV on Cartoon Network.

2023 may yet be remembered as the year the superhero movie died. Peyton Reed's "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" was released in February 2023 and was the first notable comic book-based bomb of the year. The film was notoriously re-jiggered throughout its production, with massive and expensive SFX being finalized up to the last minute. The official budget ballooned to $200 million, although separate reports have pegged the price tag as being closer to that of Disney's notorious box office misfire "John Carter" (which cost $263 million to make). "Quantumania" still grossed $464 million, but that's considered low for a Marvel movie.
Throughout 2023, more bombs dropped as superhero movies either lost money or were considered disappointments. "Shazam! Fury of the Gods," "The Flash," "Blue Beetle," "The Marvels," and "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" all tanked, and while many went to see "Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3," it felt like the last kick in a closing series.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has largely been a live-action affair, be it in theatres or with streaming. So far, only one entry into the franchise proper has been animated, that being What If…? X-Men ’97 has been the latest animated series that the studio has put out and could be on its way to becoming an MCU installment too if rumors are to be believed.
X-Men ’97
It seems like the superhero genre has entered a golden age of animation, with shows like X-Men ’97 and Invincible, and films like Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The genre is receiving the kind of boost it needs, with all the talks of superhero fatigue quickly fizzling out in the wake of these acclaimed shows and films. In light of its recent success, the directors of X-Men ’97 have a similar idea for the X-Men IP, one that Kevin Feige can’t possibly overlook...

Young actor and musician Donald Glover, also known by his musician stage name Childish Gambino, is one of the most prominent names of Hollywood’s younger (not youngest!) generation. The actor and musician made his career in 30 Rock when he was just 23, after which he had successful appearances in the Community and Atlanta. He also appeared in several movies, including The Lazarus Effect, Magic Mike Xxl, The Martian, as well as Solo: A Star Wars Story, where he played the young Lando Calrissian.
Aside from his personal appearances, Glover has done a lot of voice work as well, including voicing Simba in the CGI version of The Lion King. He also appeared as Aaron Davis (Uncle Aaron) in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse; reprising his live-action cameo from the Spider-Man: Homecoming, although it was a minor live-action role in both of these movies.

Zendaya was already a big star when she was cast as Mj in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starting with 2017’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming.” By that point in her career she had already amassed a huge following as the star of two Disney Channel hits, “Shake It Up” and “K.C. Undercover,” plus popped up in Beyonce’s “Lemonade” film and was a runner-up on “Dancing With the Stars.” None of that apparently registered for “Spider-Man” producer Amy Pascal.
“To be honest with you, neither [Marvel Studios president] Kevin Feige nor I knew who she was,” Pascal admitted in Vogue magazine as part of its Zendaya cover story. “She was wearing no makeup and she was just dressed like a regular girl, and we were like, ‘Oh my God, she’s amazing. She has to be in the movie.’ And then we found out she was a totally famous person, and felt really stupid.
