Prior to hitting the road this year, Bruce Springsteen promised that he’d mix up the setlist far more than he did last year when a vocal contingent of fans complained there wasn’t enough variation from night to night. “Some of my basic themes of mortality and life and those things, I’m going to keep set,” he said on SiriusXM’s E Street Radio. “I think I’m gonna move around the other parts of the set a lot more, so there’ll be a much wider song selection going on.

Zach Bryan has never hidden his deep love for Bruce Springsteen, so there was no reason to think he was sending any hidden message when he used “Johnny 99” as his walk-on music Wednesday night in Brooklyn at Barclays Center, or even when he came onstage in a Springsteen tour T-shirt with the sleeves cut off. But when Bryan started his two-song encore with the chords of his as-yet-unreleased song “Sandpaper,” Springsteen himself strolled onto the stage without warning.

Zach Bryan gave his unreleased song “Sandpaper” its live debut Friday night as his Quittin Time tour rolled into Newark, New Jersey.
Two-thirds of the way through his Prudential Center concert, Bryan revealed the “Sandpaper” surprise to fans, which arrived less than two months after he first teased a snippet of the track on social media in January.
At that time, Bryan shared only 45 seconds of the in-the-works “Sandpaper” on acoustic guitar, but Friday night in Newark, the song — believed to be an ode to his girlfriend Brianna Lapaglia — appeared fully formed and four minutes,...

Zach Bryan kicked off “The Quittin Time Tour” at United Center in Chicago on Tuesday (March 5th), delivering a 25-song set that spanned across his growing discography and also featured a surprise appearance from Kacey Musgraves.
To begin the show, Bryan played “Overtime” from his most recent studio album, Zach Bryan, and “Open the Gate” off of his 2022 breakout effort, American Heartbreak. Bryan then dipped back to his 2019 debut, DeAnn, to perform “God Speed” before going into his unreleased song “The Great American Bar Scene.”

The country star continued zig-zagging through his catalog, performing some of his biggest songs alongside other favorites like “Nine Ball” and “Oklahoma Smokeshow” and older cuts like “Condemned” and “Heading South.”
Undoubtedly the biggest moment of the evening was when Bryan brought out Musgraves to duet their No. 1 hit (and Consequence Song of the Week), “I Remember Everything,” for the first time ever.

On Saturday, audiences in Berlin will see the world premiere of “Above the Dust,” a Chinese-made drama that plays somewhat incongruously in the Generation Kplus section, which screens films for or about children. Whether the film plays again, and where, is moot.
The film’s director Wang Xiaoshuai, a three-time winner of Silver Bear awards at the Berlinale, is taking a considerable personal risk going ahead with the screening in the absence of approval from the mainland Chinese authorities.
With a young teen boy as the protagonist, the film depicts a hardscrabble family in a village in northwest China in 2009. While their neighbors slowly migrate to the city, the boy’s parents dig up the arid land in search of family heirlooms. Communicating with the ghost of his grandfather, the boy learns about the 1950s reforms that transferred peasant-owned land to the government and about the disastrous Great Leap Forward.

Update — 6:34 am Pst: Crucindo Hung, chairman of the Federation Of Motion Film Producers of Hong Kong, has told local press that Hong Kong’s Oscars submission, A Light Never Goes Out, was disqualified due to a conflict of interest.
Hung said he had changed the 13 members of the selection committee earlier this year after receiving a notice from AMPAS that members couldn’t vote if they’d been on the Federation’s board for more than six years. However, one of the new committee members is also an actor in the selected film. Detecting a conflict of interest, AMPAS asked Hong Kong to submit another film, but the invitation was declined.
Kyrgyzstan also declined an invitation to submit another film this year when the country’s Oscars submission, Aktan Arym Kubat’s This Is What I Remember, was disqualified because it was released before the required window of December 1, 2022 to October 31, 2023. However,...

Chinese director Bi Gan, whose 2018 film “Long Day’s Journey into Night” played at Cannes, will next direct “Resurrection.” The ambitious sci-fi detective movie is to be headlined by Chinese superstar Jackson Yee (“Better Days”) and actor Shu Qi (“The Assassin”) who sits on this year’s Venice jury.
Boasting Bi’s edgy aesthetic and narrative style, the film tells the story of a woman whose consciousness falls into the “eternal time zone” during a surgical procedure. Trapped in many dreams, she finds an android corpse and tries to wake it up by telling endless stories. The android then wanders within her stories and its senses gradually awaken.
Charles Gillibert’s CG Cinema will again co-produce the project. Bi is finishing the script and plans to shoot later this year.

The Kills — the indie rock duo featuring singer Alison Mosshart and guitarist Jamie Hince — have announced the impending arrival of their first new album in seven years, God Games.
Ahead of the LP’s October 27 release, the band has shared the latest single, “103,” a love song set amid the ever-increasing, life-threatening heat waves plaguing the planet.
The visual for “103” was directed by Steven Sebring and makes use of a custom-built 3D film studio as the camera revolves around Mosshart and Hince, who — keeping with the song’s theme — don tanning goggles and solar eclipse glasses.

The Kills have readied God Games, their first album in seven years. The project is out in full on October 27th via Domino, while the new single “103” is available to stream now.
For God Games, The Kills tried a mix of strategies old and new. Alison Mosshart and Jamie Hince composed its 12 tracks primarily on piano, a first for the duo, but recorded the LP with producer Paul Epworth, who the band have known for 20 years. They recorded the album in an old church, which presumably added to their signature sultry, blues-inspired sound.
New track “103” begins with crackling electronic percussion and guitar that rolls in waves as Mosshart sings about the end of the world. The deceptively calming song comes with a 360-degree music video directed by Steven Sebring that follows The Kills as they try not to melt under the sun’s rays. Check it out below.
Pre-orders for God Games are ongoing.

Strand Releasing has snatched up North American distribution rights to Singaporean filmmaker Anthony Chen’s recent Cannes favorite The Breaking Ice. The film made its world premiere in May in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard section, with The Hollywood Reporter‘s critics later selecting it as one of the 20 best films screened at the festival this year.
The Breaking Ice tells the story of an unlikely, fleeting friendship formed between three restless young people in China’s far northeastern border city of Yanji. It is headlined by a star-studded ensemble of young Chinese talent, including Zhou Dongyu (Oscar-nominated Better Days), Liu Haoran (the Detective Chinatown franchise) and Qu Chuxiao (The Wandering Earth).
Chen previously won Cannes’ Caméra d’Or award with his debut feature Ilo Ilo (2013), which was later submitted by Singapore as its entry to the Oscars’ best international film race. His second feature Wet Season premiered in Toronto and his English-language debut,...

The Amazon Prime Video series “The Summer I Turned Pretty” has made a splash with its loaded soundtrack. By now it is safe to say that “The Summer I Turned Pretty” and Taylor Swift go hand in hand because author and show creator Jenny Han has made it so.
The first season had five Swift songs ranging from her “Lover” album to “Fearless (Taylor’s Version),” and the Season 1 trailer debuted “This Love (Taylor’s Version)” from the yet-to-be-released re-recorded “1989.” Season 2’s teaser was set to “August,” and then the official trailer debuted “Back to December (Taylor’s Version)” shortly before “Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)” was released July 7. Only time will tell if Season 2 ties Season 1 for how many Taylor Swift songs it contains.
The sequel season’s summer-y soundtrack also contains hits from repeat artists Olivia Rodrigo, Tyler the Creator, Caroline Polachek and more. A Fleetwood Mac ballad punctuates a particularly emotional scene,...

Staind have fleshed out the details of their forthcoming album, Confessions of the Fallen, which will mark the band’s first new full-length since 2011. The 10-track record will arrive on September 15th via Alchemy Recordings/BMG. In addition, Staind have also debuted a new song off the set, the scorching “Cycle of Hurting.”
“Cycle of Hurting” is classic Staind, with heavy guitars, dark rhythms and Aaron Lewis’ tortured vocals, including some intense roars. “How can I face what’s under the surface / When nothing is working? / How can I break away from the burden / The cycle of hurting?” frontman Aaron Lewis sings in the chorus.
Regarding the dark lyrics of “Cycle of Hurting,” Lewis said in a press release, “I’m still working through my issues. Still working through my problems, and until then I’ll dream of better days. I hope that’s how everybody feels right now…better days are yet to come.

‘The Breaking Ice’ Review: An Unusually Even-Sided Love Triangle Gently Thaws a Winter of Discontent
Over the course of his first three features — “Ilo Ilo,” “Wet Season” and this year’s “Drift” — Singaporean director Anthony Chen has developed a signature style. It is a graceful, lucid classicism, a mode that in its straightforward sincerity is not fashionable in our abrasive moment, but can yield significant satisfactions. That is certainly true of his second film of 2023, “The Breaking Ice,” which describes, in a trio of perfectly judged performances, the burgeoning, momentous and yet fleeting connection between three differently lonely people — a love triangle with rounded, snowdrift corners.
Yu Jing-Pin’s lovely photography contrasts wintry wides and warm close-ups, as writer-director Chen carves out three characters against the frozen landscapes of Yanji, a small Chinese town in shouting distance of the North Korean border. This is the current home of Nana an unfulfilled bus-tour guide who switches on her ready smile for her passengers — and switches it...

Chinese actress Zhou Dongyu, who is in Cannes with Anthony Chen’s Un Certain Regard title The Breaking Ice, has had a fairytale career trajectory.
Although she had no desire to act, she was plucked from obscurity by Zhang Yimou when still a high school student in 2010, and became one of China’s most respected young actresses, with a string of award-winning films.
She agreed to star in The Breaking Ice as soon as Chen called her and before he’d even written the script. She’d worked with him before on short film The Break Away, part of Neon-produced anthology The Year Of The Everlasting Storm, which Chen had directed remotely during the pandemic.
“He called and said he wanted to shoot a film in China, quite quickly over the winter, because he had a month free when another project was postponed,” Zhou tells Deadline. “I agreed immediately...

You’d expect a movie called “The Breaking Ice” to be cold and Anthony Chen’s gentle drama about three isolated young people finding moments of connection definitely stays away from passionate and heated statements. But it’d be a mistake to think that Chen’s restraint comes at the expense of feeling, because “The Breaking Ice” is one of the most beautifully evocative films to screen during the first few days of this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
A luminous “Jules and Jim” riff with a stunning visual design and a real purpose to its apparent aimlessness, “The Breaking Ice” screened on Sunday in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes, bringing the Singaporean director back to the festival where he won the Camera d’Or for “Ilo Ilo” in 2013, and also appeared as part of the Covid-era anthology film “The Year of the Everlasting Storm” in 2021.

Cinemagoers in Hong Kong looking to have their childhoods potentially ruined by viral slasher hit Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey may have been left disappointed this week, with the film having been quietly pulled from theaters, a move that has fueled speculation about censorship over an apparent likeness between the children’s character and Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
The Hollywood Reporter understands that the microbudget British film — in which Winnie and his sidekick Piglet go on a cannibalistic rampage through Hundred Acre Wood — was due to land in more than 30 cinemas in the city this Thursday, but has now been removed from schedules. Moviematic, which had organized a pre-release screening of the film in Hong Kong planned for Tuesday, said on social media that its event had been canceled because of unspecified “technical reasons.” Several cinema chains have since removed the film from their websites.

Murder, treachery and political intrigue are the juicy ingredients of Zhang Yimou’s “Full River Red,” an entertaining if overlong mystery-comedy set in the narrow passageways and dark chambers of a Song dynasty military compound in 1146. With a twist-packed plot to match its labyrinthine location, Zhang’s fast-paced film motors along nicely as an engaging “Knives Out”-style whodunnit before stumbling a little in the protracted final act. A Lunar New Year smash hit in China, “Full River Red” will be released on 150 North American screens by specialty distributor Niu Vision Media on March 17.
The biggest commercial success of Zhang’s distinguished 35-year career, “Full River Red” has already grossed a whopping $671 million at home since Jan. 22. The 157-minute blockbuster continues the string of hits he’s delivered since big-budget international co-production misfire “The Great Wall” in 2016. The quote that opens Chinese director Liu Jian’s shaggy but amiable new animated feature is instructive. “To live, to err, to fall, to triumph, to recreate life out of life” is a passage from James Joyce’s “A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man,” and indeed, Liu was himself at art college as a young man in the early ’90s, when and where “Art College 1994” is, unsurprisingly, set. The quasi-memoir feel to the movie does have its charm — it’s always a kick to see animation techniques applied not to extravagant flights of fancy but to slices of real, ordinary life — but it’s also its chief flaw. In re-creating life out of life, Liu is quite successful; whether he makes it into drama is another question. Like its characters, “Art College 1994” gives the impression of having just too much time on its hands.

Art College 1994, a deadpan slice of comic-sad social realism from Chinese animator Liu Jian (Have a Nice Day), offers reassuring evidence that although cultural specificities can shape artistic traditions — and fashion and tastes fluctuate — art students are basically all the same and always have been: slovenly, idealistic, and prone to pretentious waffle, especially when lubricated with alcohol. But also, at least based on the evidence of the characters here, reasonably endearing with their guileless dreams of making meaningful work in a world where it sometimes feels like everything has been done. Mind you, others just want to meet romantic partners, make money somehow and maybe go abroad someday.
There’s a sense that this gently meandering, sketchbook-like work is aware of its own cinematic precedents. It certainly seems to suffer from an anxiety of influence as it tries to carve out a space for itself somewhere in the region of Eric Rohmer wistful romances,...

NFL star Tom Brady said that Janet Jackson’s infamous wardrobe malfunction during the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show was “probably a good thing” for the sport.
During the 2004 performance, Justin Timberlake ripped off a piece of Jackson’s clothing and exposed her breast to millions of viewers while the two performed “Rock Your Body”.
Brady recalled the incident during a recent episode of his Let’s Go! podcast with former NFL player Larry Fitzgerald and sportscaster Jim Gray.
“I didn’t see much. I’d much rather not see it when I’m playing,” Brady said about the famous halftime shows.
“Even I remember when we beat Carolina… We came off the field and that was when we had the wardrobe malfunction with Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson. [The media was] asking me about that. I couldn’t even understand what they were telling me about. They said, ‘Did you see the halftime show?...
