Nothing But the Truth (2008)
A taut political thriller while at the same time a personal story of a woman's struggle between her ethics and her obligations to her family.
Kate Beckinsale gives an amazing performance alongside such veterans as Angela Bassett and Alan Alda -- who is wonderful as her lawyer. Matt Dillon, Noah Wylie and David Schwimmer are just some of the other standouts in Rod Lurie's intelligent and thought-provoking film. Though the film delves into politics and ethical issues, Kate's performance draws the viewers in and gives these issues a very human face. Kate's scenes with her young son and estranged husband are quite touching. At times, her "choice" may seem unreasonable and a little cold to the viewer, but director Lurie's brilliant twist (which I will NOT spoil) adds even more layers to her character's dilemma. All in all, a timely film, well directed and well-worth checking out.
Naked City: Justice with a Bullet (1998)
A slick, intriguing off-beat thriller
This Showtime cable film features a talented cast and weaves together several storylines involving the darker side of New York... from the naive and innocent tourists' nightmarish adventure to a pair of undercover cops on the streets... to an old friend's betrayal, it has it all.
Well worth a look, as is its sequel.
