Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001)
Kept waiting for the film to start - and then it ended...
Went to see Tomb Raider on opening night, like any other avid Croft fan. The film started with a great action sequence, and I kept waiting for the film to actually begin a normal story. Instead, I got two hours of exposition to a film that never happens.
You keep getting that feeling of "Here we go, now the movie's gonna start!" - but all you get is Dialogue that seems to be a part of a "who has the best one-liner" contest between the actors, and action equences that remind you of the game, and kind of make you wish you had stayed home and played it...
It's not as if Jolie isn't great as Croft, she is. Right down to the fake British accent. The film just suffers from a state that a lot of
anticipated films suffer from - Over Hype and bad scripting.
I have no doubt in mind that if the film had a reliable screenplay and didn't depend on a good looking actress and great photography (and it does have great photography!), it could have been a really good film. Because you can't really put your finger on the 'one' thing that ruins the movie. You just get that "almost" feeling, that the film almost happens. You never really care for Lara... Her life isn't in danger throughout the movie. Instead, they threaten the life of someone she's supposed to care for - but the screenplay takes a round about way of notifying the audience Croft and the guy like each other. It seems to believe that if you bothered to come see the movie, you know all about Lara Croft, and so there's no need to explain the plot to you.
If the film didn't come off so "snobbish", pretentious and self adoring, it would have attracted all kinds of fans, and not just those
who are already fans of the game. Hate to compare - but Take "Mortal Kombat" as an example of how a film can be based on a Video game and still attract non-playing audience.
All in all, a 5 out of 10, and only because Jolie's a great actress.
Ned's Newt (1997)
Best show about a six foot newt!
There had never been a better show about a giant six foot newt harassing a big-eared child. And that speaks volumes!
"Ned's Newt" is one of those shows you never read about in the paper, but it's still one of the best animated television shows out there.
Ned is cute and all, he really is, but he doesn't hold a candle to the real star of the show - Newton the newt! This little purple entity can become hilariously funny once fed Zippo. And when that thing grows, there will be no end to the word play and the pop culture jokes. It's like seeing "The Mask" meet "Ren and Stimpy", only much much better.
So if you're looking for a laugh, look no further! It's not just an animated show, it's fun for kids and adults alike, only in different ways.
The kids will enjoy the fast pace animation and the slapstick humor, while as the adults will find references to Shakespeare and Bill Gates spleen rupturing hilarious!
See it!
The Usual Suspects (1995)
One of the best... Truly!
Going in to see the Usual Suspects I had very high expectations. It was the day after Kevin Spacey won the Academy Award for his performance and I was very anxious to see if he can live up to his award.
Not being the smartest movie goer to ever hit the screen, I will admit at the beginning I had absolutely NO idea what exactly happened there. In fact- It wasn't until I saw the film for the second time that I actually figured out All of the details...
The movie is really a great one. Surprising to the very end, Captivating story, well written script and good narrating by Kevin Spacey. I couldn't find even one dull moment about it and I actually saw it 5 times now (today being number 5 as it was shown on cable).
The story is a simple one - There was a big car loaded with guns that was stolen. 5 suspects are arrested, all of which happen to be well known villains. While spending time in the incarceration cell they begin to form a plan to rob an organization ran by crooked cops.
They soon find out that them being arrested together was no coincidence and that a bigger, higher power is behind everything... Everything!
With out giving the plot away let my just say that things do NOT end there, there is much to see in this movie and I honestly recommend it to everyone.
