I loved this movie! I read the 700+ page book by Donna Tartt. So it's what I call a quiet movie, so it's not for people who need car chases, quick resolutions, etc. But it's an engrossing story that I really enjoyed. But I would LOVE to see someone make a movie based on Donna Tartt's The Secret History.

Funny, Great New Show

I just finished watching the first 4 episodes of this new HBO series. The life of Tony Soprano is funny, profane, violent and always entertaining. The show is about his struggle with his two "families" -- the conventional one (wife, son & daughter) -- and the mafia. This is adult entertainment (lots of cursing and some nudity) but it needs to be in order to be an honest portrayal of this world. I highly recommend it (8 stars out of 10)

Casting Sinks This Movie

In my opinion, the casting of virtually all non-Jews in the roles of deeply religious Hasiddic Jews is a mistake. I ordinarily admire Rene Zellwanger, but watching her struggle with lines like "Oy Gevalt!" inspires laughter. Of all the actors, only Juliana Margulies does a decent job with her role. I found the movie somewhat entertaining, but not very realistic and with a muddled, unbelievable plotline. I would recommend "A Stranger Among Us" with Melanie Griffith as a movie which portrayed this community more sensitively and in a more sympathetic light.

A Look Into a Different World

I truly enjoyed this movie, despite bad reviews and comments about Melanie Griffith's role being not suited to her. It takes a cynical worldly woman cop (Griffith) into the strange world of Orthodox Jews when she goes undercover to investigate a murder. Her gradual acceptance into that world and growing respect for their customs and traditions was very moving to me. The warmth in the family meals and celebrations can be felt by the viewer and lets you understand how this cloistered world with rules for everything starts to look good to a woman who is so jaded and cynical in her outlook on life. The attraction between her and a Talmudic student provides sexual tension to the storyline, and the concept of finding the one person in all the world who was meant for you was so romantic.

As usual, when I want to find a "little" movie, that is heart-warming, with REAL characters and an engaging story, I have to look for a movie from the United Kingdon. This film about a lottery winner and how the small town plots to share in the fortune is a real winner. You'll be smiling for a long time afterwards!
The Impostors

Sweet, wonderful screwball comedy

This was an incredibly sweet movie reminiscent of the screwball comedies of the 1930's (it also reminded me of Woody Allen's Everyone Says I Love You). Its setting on a cruise ship is perfect and the characters are all funny. Stanley Tucci and Oliver Platt are perfect as the Laurel & Hardy-type actors who become stowaways on a ship. Billy Connelly, the Scottish actor/comedian is particularly funny as a wrestler enamored with the male physique. Highly recommended!
The Castle

Funny and Heart-Warming!

We saw this movie at the suggestion of new friends from Australia who we met on a bus tour of Scotland! This movie is not only very funny, but heart -warming as well. The family's devotion to each other is very sweet and it was great to see the "little guy" come out on top for a change! I highly recommend it!
